Bag Dream Meanings

Being a receptacle and therefore womb-like or vagina-like, a bag mav be a sexual symbol. What may determine for you the meaning of the bag in your dream is your feeling about what is in the bag, or what the bag is for.

Example: ‘I am in a strange town—usually where there are shops and lots of people. I don’t know where I am or how I got there, but I suddenly realise I have lost my handbag. I know no one and do not know what to do. When I panic I wake’ (Mrs R). Sometimes it represents the vagina, female sexuality; more often, as in example, it depicts the dreamer’s identity. Our sense of identity is often dependent largely on social contacts and recognition.

The bag, with all one’s per­sonal belongings and money, represents this social ability to get places and cope. Occasionally loss of childbearing func­tion. Idioms: bag and baggage; in the bag; pack one’s bag.

The interpretation of the image of a bag is directly connected to what is held by it. At the heart of it, a bag represents your ability to carry some object or objects with you.

If you know what is inside the bag in your dream, use that to form your interpretation; in this case, the bag represents your access to the function of those objects and their potential use to you.

If you do not know what is inside the bag, consider that any bag can hold the mysterious and perfect thing you may need at just the right moment.

The structure of the bag may offer information about how strong your ability is to have resources nearby.

A paper bag will not last as long as one made of leather.

This symbol’s significance depends greatly on the other symbols in the dream.

If the bag is empty, it could signify financial trouble ahead, but this can be averted with a little caution.

A full or heavy bag indicates financial success, and a large full bag implies the attainment of some of your more cherished dreams.

A suitcase indicates travel ahead.

A bag spiritually signifies the secret, the hidden and the occult. Long known as a symbol of femininity because of its association with the womb, it can also suggest intuitive wisdom. Occasionally it will suggest the elements of wind and air.

Psychological / emotional perspective: Depending on the actual bag (e.G.

A handbag, a shopping bag) and what is in it, we are probably hiding certain aspects of ourselves from public consideration.

To be emptying a bag suggests that we are attempting to get rid of old concepts or ideas or other aspects which may be holding us back.

To have lost a bag signifies that we have temporarily suppressed certain character traits.

Material aspects: You may be having problems with the more feminine elements in your identity such as compassion or nurturing. There is an ability to use the social graces to achieve, and to cope with whatever occurs.

A torn or broken bag may alert you to a health problem or to there being too much to deal with.

Gives gender - specific: Whereas previously men carrying bags were seen as effeminate, this is no longer the case, so in dreams a man carrying a bag can symbolize his attitude to his responsibilities. In a woman’s dream a bag is more likely to represent her inner feelings.

Bags can carry connotations of secrecy, particularly sexual secrets (bags can symbolize wombs). Placing something in a bag or similar receptacle may represent something unpleasant we wish to avoid, so a bag dream could indicate the repression of awareness. Bags can also hold gifts and nourishment (grocery bags), and represent our hopes, wishes and plans.

The key to determining which of these meanings apply is the emotional tenor of the dream. (See also Basket, Sack).

Vision: An empty bag indicates a low bank balance—and it will continue to be low for some time. Carrying a heavy bag: you have much work to do.

A full bag: you will receive some money. Losing a bag: something is not working out, but the chance for success was low from the beginning. Rummaging in a bag and finding unexpected things: your unconscious is making you aware of character traits that you didn’t know you had.

Depth Psychology: The bag contains character traits that can hinder or support you and, therefore, take a close look at what is hiding in the bag (your unconscious).

If the content shocks you, don’t “throw away the bag”—those traits would only come back later to haunt vou.

(Sack) A travelling bag or a sack in a dream represents a coffer, a keeper of one’s secrets, or it could mean a treasure. Seeing a sack or a bag in a dream also means a trip, or a young son one takes pride to carryover his shoulders.

The symbol of the unknown and the surprises that life has in store. Because it is similar to a surprise package, the bag is often a symbol for secrets (“letting the cat out of the bag”). On the other hand, it might also point to obstacles and burdens.

It is the image of the burdens that you are carrying.

It is important to pay attention to what is inside the bag.

To see a bag in your dream, represents the responsibilities that you carry.

If the bag is ripped or torn, then it indicates that you are carrying a lot of burdens.

To dream of a bag full of junk, symbolizes that you have too many worries - you have to find a way on lessening some of this load.

But if you lose it, then it means that someone already knows about those secrets; and if someone steals it from you, then someone is trying to manipulate you. Similarly, the bag represents your responsibilities. Perhaps, you have taken on too many you had the chance to share them.

Oneiric superstition says that paper bags in dreams portend bad luck in business. Fabric bags, however, the heavier they are the greater the success that will come to you.

Opening a bag in a dream is a presage oi a surprising experience that may have a lasting effect on your career.

The significance of this dream varies greatly according to its details.

If the bag was of paper and/ or was empty, it warns of financial embarrassment which could be avoided by a little extra prudence.

A cloth bag forecasts business success, and a leather bag indicates unexpected but pleasant travel.

Full or heavy bags are an especially auspicious omen for your dearest wishes.

A bag (such as a purse, backpack, or tote) can represent: Necessities, or your needs in your daily life.

The amount of effort it takes to maintain yourself, your lifestyle, or your daily requirements.

Things you “carry around with you,” such as emotional baggage, judgments, biases, or other things that weigh you down emotionally or mentally.

Your ability to accomplish things out in the world, or the essentials you rely on to do so, such as your identity and skills (consider the meanings of the individual items in the bag).

Your responsibilities (such as financial, self, or family).

Losing your bag can represent a feeling or fear of: neglecting a responsibility; “losing out” because you’re not paying attention; losing something tangible or intangible.

Someone stealing your bag can represent a feeling or fear of victimization that interferes with your ability to accomplish things in the world.
