Accident To Loved Ones

To dream that a loved one dies in an accident indicates that something in your own self is no longer functional, and is ‘dead’. It is also symbolic of your own relationship with that person. Perhaps you need to let go of this relationship, or let go of a particular phase in that relationship and move towards the next. For example, the first throes of passion may have ebbed away, but you can replace them with love, stability and commitment.... The Element Encyclopedia

Foxglove

The elegant foxglove is known as the flower of insincerity. Within the bright exterior of the foxglove is a substance called digitalis, a natural heart stimulant that is used as a cardiac medicine but can kill if given in high doses. This is why the foxglove is sometimes called dead man’s fingers. Do you need some form of stimulation for the heart? Foxgloves are also called finger flowers because the flowers are like the fingers of a glove. When you dream of foxglove, think of the significance of a glove; a glove can protect, as well as conceal, a hand. Is there something you are trying to keep hidden? Glove

If your dream highlights gloves is there a particular person or situation in waking life you need to handle with extra special care? Or do you need to protect yourself in some way. Are you keeping your hands clean and avoiding dirty business? Freud associated gloves (into which hands are inserted) with sexuality and with birth control. Traditionally, a glove was a symbol of purity in women, and picking up a glove would have the same meaning as picking up a handkerchief dropped by a woman—an invitation to intimacy.

If you take your gloves off in your dream, this may suggest a desire for more honesty in waking life.

If you took your right-hand glove off in order to shake hands with someone, your dream reveals your real feelings for that person.

Gloves

Gloves both protect and hide your hands, so they connect with your talents, abilities, skills, and expressiveness. This can be deliberate or imposed, helpful or limiting.

The type of gloves and how they appear in the dream will give you clues for an accurate interpretation. Because we gesture with our hands, a dream about gloves may connect to the part of communication that is beyond our words and part of our body language. Gloves represent the various masks we wear in our communication to present that which we want to while hiding our true skins underneath. Sexy, tight-fitting gloves connect to subtle elements of seduction. Work gloves might help you find areas in your life where you feel you have to work hard to conceal your true meaning. Lace gloves evoke delicate communication that is only thinly veiled or is hiding the authentic meaning. Boxing gloves point to a fight brewing from a challenge in your life. They might also be inhibiting your communication because of guardedness—hands inside of boxing gloves may be ready to fight, but they can’t be very gentle or expressive. Mittens may connect to a need or desire to be more comfortable, but at the loss of the same expressiveness or effectiveness. Long gloves up the arms connect to the extensiveness of the hidden issues or the seduction at hand. Rubber gloves may be about projecting underlying messages of more serious vulnerability to communication that is toxic.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Good

Buddhism, far more than Christianity or Islam, has a very strong pacifist element. The orientation toward non-violence has played a significant role in the political history of Buddhist countries. In dreams, the Buddha characterizes the highest spiritual attainment; enlightenment and the true wisdom that accompanies it. The Dalai Lama is head of the dominant Dge-lugs-pa order of Tibetan Buddhists and, until 1959, both spiritual and temporal ruler of Tibet. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his non-violent campaign to end Chinese domination of Tibet. In dreams, a meeting with the Dalai Lama suggests a message of justice, peace and inner strength.

In dreams, Jesus Christ symbolizes love, a high spiritual messenger or someone who sacrifices everything for a goal, whilst Mother Teresa is the archetypal mother figure who characterizes selfless love, compassion and giving aid. Once Mother Teresa was asked how she could continue visiting the terminally ill, day after day after day, feeding them, wiping their brows, giving them comfort as they lay dying. She said, ‘It’s not hard, because in each one I see the face of Christ in one of His more distressing disguises.’ Abraham Lincoln paved the way to freeing the slaves from oppression, and so in dreams he represents integrity and things of which you should be proud.

Martin Luther King was an American clergyman, Nobel Prize winner, a prominent advocate of non-violent protest and one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement. His ‘I have a dream’ speech is known the world over and in dreamland the appearance of King himself may be urging you to commit yourself to a cause and strive to achieve your dreams. A similar figure is Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian nationalist leader who established his country’s independence from Britain through a non-violent revolution.

If Gandhi appears in dreams, he characterizes living spirituality or fighting for spiritual principles.... The Element Encyclopedia

Good And Evil People In Dreams

Now and again your dreaming mind may conjure up powerful images of notoriously evil people to warn you against the destructive effects of negative forces in yourself, or in some aspect of your waking life. These people embody the classic shadow or villain archetype. Similarly, your dreaming mind may come up with images of people celebrated for their incredible compassion and goodness; your unconscious may have chosen such people to inspire and encourage you to find healing within, or to reach out to others with compassion. Such images are typically archetypal symbols of the teacher and healer.

The following list is merely a starting point, being far from comprehensive, but if any of these well-known figures appear in your dreams, try to find out why. They are such vivid and colorful examples of the potential power of good or evil in waking life that their appearance in dreamland should be taken extremely seriously as a powerful message from your unconscious.... Good Deed

Doing a good deed in a dream means repentance, reestablishing the connection with one’s blood relations, uniting one’s family with love or being charitable in helping a poor person.

If one sees himself calling people to God Almighty in a dream, it means that he will be saved from hell-fire. Doing good deeds in a dream such as charity, prayers, invoking God’s blessings, helping others, protecting the rights of others, commanding what is lawful and shunning what is forbidden incurs the divine pleasure and bounty, and brings profits to one’s business, pays his debts, dispels his fears and leads him to receive a leading position in his community. Thanking God Almighty for His favors in a dream means receiving an inheritance. Doing a good deed in a dream also signifies receiving encouragement or having encouraging ambitions.

Good Deeds

Positive experiences are usually less common in dreams than negative experiences; but when they do appear, their purpose is to compensate, inspire, encourage and motivate.

According to Jung, dreams are a compensation for what is going on in daily life. They can serve as a positive or negative compensation. In this way they attempt to balance the psyche. For example, if you experience unhappiness in daily life, you may have a positive, uplifting dream of happiness and contentment. There may also be an element of wish-fulfillment. For example, if you are in financial trouble in your waking life, you may have an exciting dream about winning the lottery.

As well as serving a compensatory or wish-fulfillment function, your dreaming mind may conjure up images of courage, bravery or tenderness in dreams to highlight the need for you to be equally courageous, brave or tender in your waking life. Dreams that feature kindness, love, goodness and purity also highlight qualities that you might want to consider nurturing within yourself.

And if you see yourself acting like a saint or a hero in your dreams, the message may be that if you follow the example set in your dream you may find a way to overcome obstacles that are holding you back so you can move forward in certain areas of your life. Such dreams do not mean that someone is going to die or that certain people are going to leave you, rather that a particular phase in life is coming to an end. The dream should contain clues regarding which phase in life is being referred to.

If you are the dead person or the dead person is unknown to you, then some aspect of your personality or some issue in your daily life needs to be left behind.

If a friend dies in your dream, perhaps that friendship has run its course, or perhaps your friend is about to get married and the nature of your friendship will change.... The Element Encyclopedia

Letters And Communication

Dreams are a unique form of communication; a way for your dreaming self to communicate with you.

Sometimes the messages contained within dreams can be obscure and difficult to interpret but if your dream contains symbols of communication, such as letters, handwriting, telephones or emails, its meaning may be easier to interpret. Often these symbols are entwined with a wealth of other images but sometimes you may wake with a lingering image of them as the main item in your dream.

Both Carl Jung and Fritz Perls believed that each dream symbol is an aspect of your true self and that communication symbols, in particular, contain useful messages from your unconscious. When trying to interpret these messages, first consider whether the communication makes a clear reference to your waking life or triggers other associations for you. The next thing to consider is the form the communication took and what this suggests. For example, a phone call suggests something more informal than a telegram.

If the communication was coded, does that imply a close connection or a lack of understanding? Considering all these aspects in their context along with the other symbols in your dream may help with the interpretation. See also NUMBERS; SOUNDS.... The Element Encyclopedia

Life And Death Struggle

The struggle for survival in dreamland is reflected in symbols such as quicksand, dangerous animals, wildfire, war and enemies; these all suggest the need to find a kind of security that cannot be taken away from you.

If you are prone to life-and-death struggles in your dreams, your dreaming mind is telling you that there is only one way to find the security that cannot be lost: you need to place value on things that are not material, as everything else is at risk. The things that cannot be lost reside in your heart and your spirit. This doesn’t mean you should stop focusing on the material in life; it simply means that you need to find peace and contentment by being more flexible and tolerant in waking life.... Life Jacket

A life jacket keeps you afloat in water in order to save your life. Water is a symbol of emotions, and needing a life jacket in a body of water implies that an overwhelming amount of feelings is causing you great fear and / or discomfort.

The life jacket is therefore a symbol of your ability to surrender and not allow the overwhelm you are experiencing to do any damage.

If you dream of a life jacket, you are connecting to whatever will keep you safe while you ride out some difficult emotional experience.

If someone in your dream is wearing a life jacket, consider what that person represents as a character aspect of yourself, as that may be the quality that is needed right now to keep yourself afloat.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Life-and-death Struggle

Life-and-death struggles are common in dreams, but in some cases these dreams end with a struggle to avoid catastrophe. These are the sorts of dream in which almost every stranger turns out to be an enemy. Even the landscape of these dreams is laden with death traps, sharp ravines, wild fires, dangerous animals and so on.

If you have this kind of dream, the chances are you are fighting for survival in some aspect of your waking life. On the other hand, you may be the kind of person who makes ordinary choices and decisions as if their survival were at stake. For example, small disappointments or minor upsets send you into meltdown and you are frequently dissatisfied if some invisible inner standard has not been met.

If you are prone to life-and-death dreams, your unconscious is urging you to find a kind of security that cannot be lost. In other words, you need to look at things that are intangible and reside in your spirit and in your emotions, because everything else—since it is out of your control—is at risk. You need to develop greater flexibility and tolerance, and by so doing you can find contentment and peace.

If your life-and-death battle involves a war scene, the emphasis shifts.

Despite war’s disturbing and destructive nature, it can sometimes be represented as a cleansing process that represents a victory of good over evil. However, in dreams war is generally regarded as a warning that dangerous times lie ahead, as well as indicating inner conflicts and deep-seated grievances. An important aid for interpreting dreams of warfare is to remember whether you were on the winning or losing side.

If you were on the winning side, this suggests you are on the right track.

If you were on the losing side, what can you learn from the tactics of the winning side? Surprisingly, to dream that you are wounded in battle denotes that you have finally been accepted by your peers.... The Element Encyclopedia

Love

For most of us, love is a full-time obsession . We are concerned about the love of our parents, children, co-workers, friends, and many, many others. There is nothing more important to our emotional, psychological, or spiritual well-being than love.

It is a vital part of any growth process. We need to have a healthy dose of self-love so that we can, in turn, love the world. Dreams may be filled with images of love, friendship, compassion, and lust. In the end, it is all about acceptance and belonging.

To be loved is to feel accepted and have a sense of belonging. In our dreams we may be trying to figure out this mystery called love.

To dream of love symbolizes strong emotions brought by a current relationship in your waking life. It suggests joy and satisfaction with your present state in life. This may also connote the opposite, particularly a yearning to get into a romantic relationship and experience the bliss of being loved unconditionally.

To dream that your friend is in love with you indicates that you are romantically interested in your friend. You might have fallen in love with your best friend and cannot take your mind off the possibilities of taking your platonic relationship to a different level. Love

For a correct interpretation of the dream you must first consider who it was who loved you, and at the same time, who was the object of your love. Overall, love in dreams represents the desire to achieve an idealized relationship that is difficult to achieve. Although it can also be a reminder for you to pay more attention to your partner, thus avoiding neglect of that person’s love.

From the oneiric point of view, to dream that you are loved and blessed augurs hardship. Instead, to dream that you are often disgraced or rejected often implies happy days.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Love

Psychologists generally define love as an intense feeling of liking, affection or an enduring sentiment towards a person combined with a strong desire to be with that person. In dreams, sexual images are more frequent than the ephemeral images of love; it was this which encouraged Freud to develop his theories about sex and sexual energy as being more powerful in dreamland than love itself. The connection between love and the erotic is therefore often inescapable in Freudian dream analysis, and the sexual interpretation of dreams became for Freud the key to unlock their meaning.

Jung, on the other hand, saw the world of dreams and love quite differently from Freud. He rejected Freud’s heavy emphasis on sex and instead saw dreams not only as a way to understand what was wrong with a person, but also as a way to encourage the creative development of a person’s whole potential. Dreams could therefore be a way of improving and encouraging feelings of wholeness, love and tenderness towards oneself and others in waking life.

Most dream analysts draw on the theories of both Jung and Freud when exploring the concept of love and dreams but they also ask the question: is the person in your dream really the object of your intense feelings of love or is there another way to read the dream? For example, dreams in which you fall in love or are reminded of the passionate early days of a relationship may have nothing to do with actual relationships but may be urging you to inject some passion into your life. They may also suggest that you are yearning to be loved and cherished. Try to remember who or what aroused feelings of love or passion in your dream.

If it was your partner and you are deeply in love in waking life, your dream may have been reaffirming your lasting affection. If, however, you are past those heady days of romance and passion, your dream may be reminding you of the chemistry that drew you to your partner and how easily it can be rekindled.

If you had a dream in which you found yourself in love with someone who in waking life is a friend, a colleague or someone you don’t really know but see on the journey to work every morning, you may find the experience unsettling, especially if you are in a committed relationship. It is possible that you feel drawn to that person in some unconscious way but are ignoring those feelings in waking life because they are inappropriate. Our dreams are often quickly prompted by a perhaps irrational attraction; if this is the case, your dreaming mind is allowing you to experience your desires in a safe environment in which no one can be hurt.

If you are not in a relationship, however, then such a dream may be urging you to acknowledge or express your feelings for that person. Bear in mind, too, that you may not dream of the actual person but may find them represented symbolically. For example phallic symbols, such as spears, swords or tall buildings may represent the man a woman is attracted to. Look also for puns concerning the object of your desire. Your lover may also be represented by an animal such as a kitten in your dream. In waking life, do you feel the need to be protected and adored in the same way? Alternatively, if you are not attracted to the person in your dream in any way in waking life, there may be something about them that you admire and wish to cultivate yourself: for example, a way with words, a flair for fashion, a musical talent, an exciting job or a carefree lifestyle. Try to work out with which aspect of that person’s character and life your dreaming mind has pictured you falling in love. To sum up, as with most emotions, in your dreams love is usually an expression of that feeling or a compensation for not receiving it in waking life.... The Element Encyclopedia

Remember that no one is going to take you by the hand and lead you step by step along the way. If you want insight, ask and you will receive. But you must make your own choices and decisions. It is your life. You are the writer, producer, and director, and you are playing all the roles. Create  whatever you want. You have total freedom. It is only your thoughts that limit you. Your dream symbols help you look at the very thought patterns that are governing your life. Dreams take you to a higher level of consciousness and understanding which has the power to transform your life and your world. The whole purpose is to see objectively the life situations you are creating, survey the limitations and obstacles imposed through your own beliefs, and understand how best to work around or eliminate them. As you work on your own growth, all others will benefit; they will see your light, your knowledge and your truth.  ... Dreampedia

Relationship Dreams At Different Stages Of Your Life

Dreams about relationships are extremely common. This is because the health and survival of your relationships is a primary goal for your unconscious; in your dreams it constantly reviews your relationship options, mulls things over and tries to identify what went wrong and how to do things better. It may also give you a glimpse of how different things might be if you married someone else, had an affair or got divorced.

Although the following dreams can occur at any stage of your life, you may find that the focus of your relationship dreams shifts during your lifespan. In your teenage years, dream scenarios in which you are suddenly thrown together with someone to whom you are attracted are very common. The goal of the dream is to help you determine if someone is or is not interested in you in waking life. By the mid-twenties, however, relationship dreams move beyond initial attraction and begin to explore who is or is not right for us. This is the time when strangers, celebrities and friends tend to appear as dream lovers and partners. You may find the images shocking but it is important to bear in mind that the images are unlikely to represent the real person and more likely to represent qualities that you are evaluating.

During your thirties and forties, romantic dreams focus on explanations for why relationships may have disappointed in the past and offer dreams that can show you what to go after or avoid in the future. Dreams in which your current partner or lover is unfaithful are extremely common at this time; it is as if your dreaming mind is urging you to pay attention to your relationship, and secure or safeguard what you have.

During your fifties and sixties, dreams shift their focus onto things you have learned to value in your life. Past and present partners become shorthand symbols for the quality or experience you had with them. For example, your first lover represents passion and excitement or the partner who was unfaithful represents someone who cannot be trusted. Although you may dream of people from your past, your dreaming mind is using them as symbols to refer to your current relationships. From your seventies onwards, dreams are more likely to zoom in on the very nature of love itself to help you gain a deeper understanding of love and affairs of the heart.... The Element Encyclopedia

Stages Of Life

In his 1930 essay ‘Stages of Life’, Jung postulated four stages of life— childhood, youth, middle age and old age—based on his own clinical observations.

He viewed youth as a period of expanding consciousness, middle age as a period of questioning long-held convictions, and old age as a period of increased introspection and preoccupation with self-evaluation. According to Jung, dreams are important tools of self-discovery for you, whatever your age or life stage.

This is because in every stage of your life you will face many challenges: emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical. These challenges can trigger fascinating dreams, some of which can help you to meet those challenges and pass on to the next phase of your development.

Jung believed that what prevents people from becoming independent, fulfilled and ultimately happy is their refusal to open themselves to change or to new and unfamiliar experiences that potentially threaten their sense of self. His approach to finding balance in every stage of life was through the analysis of dreams and a process he called ‘individuation’. Dreams are a powerful tool for self-discovery and individuation is a self-analysis, a self-discovery, a way of analysing your own reactions and responses at every life stage so you can discover what truths lie underneath your conscious and egocentric personality.

In this chapter you will explore dreams that are believed to be typical of distinct life stages; some dream analysts refer to them as ‘developmental dreams’. This is because they seem particularly to reflect the typical stresses, questions and issues you may face at specific times in your life. This makes sense as you would expect the dreams you had when you were fifteen to reflect the concerns of your life as a teenager, just as you would expect the dreams you have now to have evolved into a mirror of your current situation and age group. Bear in mind, however, that how the stresses and challenges of your current life stage is represented in the dream world depends upon your personal circumstances, your sleep patterns and your ability to remember your dreams.

Bear in mind, too, that it is possible to have any one of these dreams even if you don’t fit the life-stage profile that coincides with it.

Dreams of death will also be explored in this chapter, as death is the final stage or change that comes to us all. Although dreams of death may explore your feelings about death or represent potential you may have missed or not expressed in general, dream analysts believe that such dreams represent the ending of one phase so a new one can begin. They reveal forthcoming finalities such as the end of a relationship or career and should not be interpreted literally. Because in the past we were terrified at the idea of death, it also represents upheaval, calamity and the sense that things will never be the same again. It was something that could only be endured but never be understood. Today, as our attitudes towards death have changed, death in a dream represents a challenge that cannot be avoided and which must be confronted if progress is to be made in waking life.

The message is that some approach or attitude to life needs to be changed or adjusted; if you can find the courage to make that adjustment successfully, there can be a fresh start or a new beginning.

Symbols Of Love

Love can be expressed in many ways in your dream and almost any symbol can be associated with it. Dreams of adopting or looking after a child, person or animal are often strongly associated with the idea of taking care of someone and are associated with love. To dream of shooting an arrow is also a love symbol. At whom or what were you shooting the arrow and whom or what do they represent? The arrow may also be a phallic symbol. As far as your emotional life is concerned, your dreams can sometimes tell you things of which you are not yet aware; it is worth paying attention to the suggestions that come to you in your sleep.

For example, if you are undecided about whether to commit to a person, dreams in which bells feature or you hear bells chiming appear to be hinting at marriage or a deeper emotional commitment. You may, for instance, have a dream in which the door bell rings and your prospective husband, wife or partner is at the door. Bear in mind, however, that dreams are not always so literal; dreams of love are more difficult to understand than overtly sexual dreams, since almost any symbol can be associated with this area of your life.

Pay attention to your feelings in the dream as they can help you see your potential partners and your feelings for what they really are. So if you have a feeling of dread when the door bell rings, this probably is not a good sign.

Bear in mind, too, that dreams that contain symbols closely related to home life, such as a beloved family object or a much-used room, are more likely to relate to a family member and your feelings towards them than to a potential lover. It may also be helpful to see how the feelings of love are being represented in your dream.

If the emotional bond and closeness is more important than the sexual, this may be related to baby love.

If great sexual drive and the fulfillment of your own needs is the theme along with a desire to explore and experiment, this suggests adolescent love. Adult love is represented by a dream sense of recognizing the needs of the partner and putting them before your own without losing your sense of direction or independence.... The Tree Of Life

Spiritually and in dreams, the tree is a symbol of the Tree of Life; an ancient idea common to many cultures and mythologies. Often regarded as an all-nourishing, all-giving Mother, many myths speak of the Tree of Life or World Tree as involved in the creation of the universe.

Britain was once covered by mighty oak, lime and pine forests, and reverence for trees is a major feature within Celtic religion, reflecting a link between the upper and lower worlds. Druids had their teaching center in the midst of oak groves, and the words for wood and wisdom are similar (Welsh gwydd and gwyddon). The Celtic Tree of Life is one of the most popular and enduring motifs of Celtic art, found both on Northumbrian and Celtic crosses and on illuminated manuscripts. It is also portrayed variously as the Golden Bough, vine, or mistletoe. The ancient Celts envisioned the cosmos in the form of a great tree, whose roots were deep in the earth and whose branches stretched to the heavens.

The Celtic Tree of Life is therefore a symbol of balance between these worlds; the unification of above and below; a symbol of balance and harmony. Its branches and roots form a map of the cosmos wherein all things are interwoven and connected; it dwells in three worlds—a link between heaven, earth and the underworld. In dreams the appearance of the Tree of Life or any kind of tree can therefore be a powerful symbol of harmony, success, integration and fulfillment.

These can be achieved in waking life when there is a union between the material and the spiritual, and the feminine and masculine aspects of your personality.... The Element Encyclopedia

Typical Dreams Of Later Life

Dreams in later life can be extremely tense and memorable; two of the most common are dreams of losing your purse or wallet and dreams of getting lost. The former dream reflects frustration and anxiety, and the experience of change as loss and threat. The latter is about trying to find your way through a situation that seems unfamiliar. In this second dream you typically find yourself in a strange neighborhood and, if you do stop to ask for directions, people give you the wrong ones. This dream represents a situation that is unfamiliar; the advice of others is not only unhelpful, it can actually make matters more confusing. The dream is reminding you that the more closely you follow your instincts or intuition, the easier it will be to find your way home or have self-knowledge.
