Volcano Dream Meaning: From 31 Different Sources

Erupting or dormant, a volcano may be a warning that some frustrated part of you (e.g. your sexuality) is likely to create havoc unless you allow it expression in your life. This may entail removing guilt-feelings and fears that have inhibited its expression in the past.

A volcano is symbolic of the possibility for a rageful, destructive expression after prolonged constraint or restraint.

The outer image of the volcano reveals the aftermath of the essence of this symbol: constraint or restraint.

The earth’s crust can only hold back the brewing force of heat and combustion for so long before the buildup of pressure generates an explosive eruption that permanently changes the landscape.

The intense heat and molten lava connect to feelings of rage, anger, and any other suppressed emotions of great power.

The eruption is the breaking point that is either imminent or close at hand.

A dormant volcano connects to past issues of pent-up stressors that no longer threaten your comfort and safety. An active volcano indicates an ongoing, volatile situation that is still emitting steam and could erupt again at any moment.

Universal Landscape: Feeling rage; destructive expression after prolonged constraint or restraint.

Dreaming Lens: Were you near the volcano? Were you under its reach? Were you witnessing it from above or at a distance? Was it erupting? Was it dormant? Were there people in harm’s way? Were you experiencing fear? Were you exhilarated?

Personal Focus: The outer image of the volcano reveals the aftermath of the essence of this symbol: constraint or restraint. The Earth’s crust can only hold back the brewing force of heat and combustion for so long before the build up of pressure generates an explosive eruption that permanently changes the landscape.

The intense heat and molten lava connect to feelings of rage, anger, and any other suppressed emotions of great power. The eruption would be the breaking point that is either imminent or close at hand. A dormant volcano connects to past issues of pent-up stressors no longer threatening your comfort and safety. An active volcano indicates an ongoing, volatile situation that may just currently be emitting steam, but can re-erupt at any moment. The lava flow itself is the dangerous aftermath of expressing feelings of rage. The ash that rains down after the explosion aligns with the way an outburst tends to leave the entire environment coated with some evidence of the conflict.

Whatever is at risk of being destroyed by a volcano will reveal the parts of life that feel vulnerable to the experience of withheld anger. A city or town might indicate that your social associations and circles of friends play an important role. A lush valley might point to the dissolution of serenity. An urban center might mean that institutions or your greater community is at the cause of your building frustration. Whatever lies in the path of a volcano’s destruction can be explored for clues to what your unconscious is harboring resentment toward. Evacuate, if you can.

Violence

(1) If in a dream you behave violently towards a person or animal, some deep-seated anger or resentment is indicated, particularly if such behaviour recurs in your dreams. The cause may be frustration of a basic desire. Guilt-feelings caused by a desire that was (perhaps wrongly) felt to be illegitimate may be accompanied by anger, either directed outwards against someone (perhaps a parent) who forbade the fulfilment of the desire, or directed inwards against yourself as a form of self-punishment. Therefore, if in a dream you are a victim of violence, this may be a symbol of your tendency to punish yourself.

(2) Even where the violence is obviously directed towards someone else, it may indicate anxiety. For example, a man who dreams of cruel sex with a woman is almost certainly afraid of women and afraid of - guilty about - his own sexuality. The cause of the guilt and anxiety needs to be uncovered, even if it means seeing a psychotherapist.

(3) A violent explosion - volcano, bomb, etc. - will usually mean that some part of you is frustrated and ready to wreak havoc in your life if you continue to deny it expression.

Volcanic Eruptions

Early dream oracles linked dreams about volcanoes with passionate but deceitful love. An eighteenth-century almanac claimed that if a woman dreamed of an active volcano, she would be driven by greed to ‘ensnare a husband by wantonly flaunting her charms’. In dream-lore today, volcanoes are generally thought to represent strong emotions, possibly carnal desire, held in check but bubbling away just below the surface to be released in a violent eruption of pent-up fury. In other words, hot passions are aroused, and care should be taken in case they erupt without warning into violent or dangerous behavior.

If you dreamed of visiting or living by a volcano—perhaps a famous one such as Mount Saint Helen’s—and then having to run for your life as it suddenly erupted and spewed molten lava into your path, this dream may be referring to a struggle in waking life to suppress your mounting fury. Your unconscious may have used this dramatic image to warn you that you won’t be able to contain your anger for much longer. What is especially telling about the volcano is its unpredictability; it could erupt at any time.

If the lava is prominent in the dream, feelings will run deep, but if the lava has cooled, there has been a deep passion which has now cooled off.

If the explosiveness is more noticeable than the lava, anger may be more prominent. On the other hand, your dream may have reflected the volatile temper of someone you live or work with in waking life, and your fear of being at the receiving end of their anger. Or is a torrent of fiery emotion about to explode in waking life? If it is, or might be, the experience can be devastating and yet also cathartic. To dream of an extinct volcano can indicate that passions have been killed off or a difficult situation has ended.... volcanic eruptions dream meaning

Hostility

If you are hurling verbal abuse at someone in a dream, this may be urging you to put your energy to better use.

If someone is hurling abuse at you, consider if you are accusing yourself of something in waking life or if you have made someone angry.

If fury is expressed vocally in your dream, consider what is being said as it may contain a clue to your agitation.

If you use or see weapons in dreams, these are clear symbols of aggression and heated emotions. The type of weapon featuring in your dream should help you understand what it represents in your waking life.

If you know the person who is attacking you, then your dream may reflect genuine hostility between the two of you.

If you do not know the person, the dream may represent your lack of control over a situation in your waking life or feelings of insecurity.

Consider also if this person could have been your shadow. Ask yourself what it is about this person that you dislike. Because your unconscious sometimes projects characteristics or qualities that you dislike in yourself onto others, in your dreams your dreaming mind may be sending you a message that you should acknowledge this hidden aspect of yourself and come to terms with it.

If you are threatened or make a threat in your dream, were you accusing yourself of something? Have you made mistakes or been inconsiderate lately? Take a note of your attitude in the dream as it could tell you a lot about your attitude towards being intimidated in real life. Do you cringe in fear or stand up for yourself? If a physical fight or dispute features in your dream, this may be between different aspects of your character or two different arguments that you need to balance.

If there is a clear winner in your dream, you need to think about what message your dreaming mind is sending you about the correct course of action to take.

If explosions feature in your dreams, they may be symbols of your feelings of anger and hostility in waking life. On the other hand, the image may also be suggesting that you are bottling up your action and now is the time to express yourself before you lose control in your waking life.

If you were lighting a fuse that triggered an explosion or taking part in a demolition in your dream, you may want to destroy an aspect of your life. This may refer to a situation you are finding difficult to resolve or negative aspects of your character that you would like to replace with positive qualities. Images of a bursting dam, an erupting volcano or an avalanche of snow or rocks may also warn of emotional explosions overwhelming your self-control; they are all a sign that you should express how you feel. More positively, such dreams may point to a release of creative energy. Hidden anger towards someone can also be revealed by sudden discharges of gas or flames from a container—a bottle, box or container in dreams often represent feelings that are bottled up. Other hatefilled images such as acid thrown in someone’s face, a decapitated loved one or throwing rotten eggs at someone can reveal that you urgently need to deal with your pent-up rage.

Danger

Dreams about earthquakes, landslides and volcanoes all point to inner turmoil or emotional conflict that is shaking the foundation of the dreamer’s world. The dream may often come close to being a nightmare, but such dreams are warning you about something that is going on in your waking life to which you need to pay attention. A dream about a natural disaster is unlikely to be prophetic; it is more likely to be referring to something dangerous in your waking life. For example, an avalanche dream may refer to oppressive forces in waking life threatening to overwhelm you—an avalanche of responsibility, for example, that accompanies the birth of a new child.

If you are swept away in the dream, you are being urged to find something, or someone, to hold onto in waking life to regain stability.

If you dreamed that the earth was cracking open beneath you, this threat may be echoed in changes at work or insecurity within a relationship.

An explosion may reflect sudden changes in waking life or the release of emotion. What damage has the explosion inflicted in the dream? If anything was broken, interpret its symbolism; if someone was clinging on to you in the dream, who are they? If you dreamed you were in danger of thunder or lighting, again this may refer to emotional turmoil in waking life; but a dream about being struck by lighting could refer to sudden insight.

If you dream that you are falling into a dark hole, is there some situation in waking life out of which you feel you cannot climb?

Dreams featuring alarms may be caused by car or house alarms that go off in the night; if there is no external stimulus of this sort, and your dream features a house alarm, does this allude to your family? Does someone need protection at this time? Was the alarm effective in the dream? If the alarm failed to go off, this is an extremely significant symbol.

If your dream features a car alarm, this may allude to some kind of rash behavior and, as men often equate cars with sexuality, you may want to consider it in this context.

Dreams can also often warn of dangers of which we may be unaware in waking life. For example if you dream of overspending, this may suggest you are expending too much emotion on a particular person.

If you dream of escaping from a prison to a happy landscape, this may be a warning that you need to relax more. There are other practical warning dreams. For example, you may dream that your car brakes fail and in waking life find that this is indeed the case. There is usually a simple explanation as your unconscious mind may have registered the fault, but this kind of dream should not be ignored (see ACCIDENTS, ACTION AND ADVENTURES). Similarly dreams of bodily aches and pains and other signs of poor health are also worth taking note of.
