Avalanche: Feeling trapped, frozen, or unable to act. Or, an overwhelmingly heavy burden that you feel was thrust upon you unwillingly (see Ice, Snow).

Cave in: Tlie crumbling of foundations or an insecure position. Also a type of burial dream.

Earthquake: Something is shaking your foundations, potentially to the core of what you regard as truth. Alternatively, breaking up with, or away from, a person, organization, job, or situation.

Flood: Feeling swept away by uncontrolled emotions or overpowering circumstances. Alternatively, a thorough cleansing before a new start (see Water).

Hurricane or tornado: An alternative symbol of the air element, which relates to the mind, voice, or breath. In this case, however, the element is destructive, probably revealing ill-health or an overly active conscious mind that does not allow the intuitive self through.

If related specifically to speech, this symbolizes an individual whose loudmouthed nature destrovs much of what it contacts.

Landslide: Backward movement or retreat. Returning to old thought forms and behavior patterns.

Oil spill: A renewed awareness of personal responsibility toward nature. Alternatively, a defiled trust, the adulteration of an ideal, or a slipperv situation.

Volcano: These are Earth’s cauldrons that stir up your temper or other hot feelings that have already been building to the point of violent eruptions (see Fire). Find a safe outlet before someone gets hurt.

(1) If in a dream you behave violently towards a person or animal, some deep-seated anger or resentment is indicated, particularly if such behaviour recurs in your dreams. The cause may be frustration of a basic desire. Early dream oracles linked dreams about volcanoes with passionate but deceitful love. An eighteenth-century almanac claimed that if a woman dreamed of an active volcano, she would be driven by greed to ‘ensnare a husband by wantonly flaunting her charms’. In dream-lore today, volcanoes are generally thought to represent strong emotions, possibly carnal desire, held in check but bubbling away just below the surface to be released in a violent eruption of pent-up fury. In other words, hot passions are aroused, and care should be taken in case they erupt without warning into violent or dangerous behavior.

If you dreamed of visiting or living by a volcano—perhaps a famous one such as Mount Saint Helen’s—and then having to run for your life as it suddenly erupted and spewed molten lava into your path, this dream may be referring to a struggle in waking life to suppress your mounting fury. Your unconscious may have used this dramatic image to warn you that you won’t be able to contain your anger for much longer. What is especially telling about the volcano is its unpredictability; it could erupt at any time.

If explosions feature in your dreams, they may be symbols of your feelings of anger and hostility in waking life. On the other hand, the image may also be suggesting that you are bottling up your action and now is the time to express yourself before you lose control in your waking life.

The dream may often come close to being a nightmare, but such dreams are warning you about something that is going on in your waking life to which you need to pay attention. If you dreamed you were in danger of thunder or lighting, again this may refer to emotional turmoil in waking life; but a dream about being struck by lighting could refer to sudden insight.

If you dream that you are falling into a dark hole, is there some situation in waking life out of which you feel you cannot climb?

Dreams featuring alarms may be caused by car or house alarms that go off in the night; if there is no external stimulus of this sort, and your dream features a house alarm, does this allude to your family? Does someone need protection at this time? Was the alarm effective in the dream? If the alarm failed to go off, this is an extremely significant symbol.

If your dream features a car alarm, this may allude to some kind of rash behavior and, as men often equate cars with sexuality, you may want to consider it in this context.

Dreams can also often warn of dangers of which we may be unaware in waking life. For example if you dream of overspending, this may suggest you are expending too much emotion on a particular person.

If you dream of escaping from a prison to a happy landscape, this may be a warning that you need to relax more. There are other practical warning dreams. For example, you may dream that your car brakes fail and in waking life find that this is indeed the case. There is usually a simple explanation as your unconscious mind may have registered the fault, but this kind of dream should not be ignored (see ACCIDENTS, ACTION AND ADVENTURES). Similarly dreams of bodily aches and pains and other signs of poor health are also worth taking note of.
