Hotel

All dwelling places generally represent the dreamer’s psychological, emotional, or spiritual condition.

The dream may reflect a current reality, issue, or dilemma and attempt to bring the dreamer into greater self-awareness. Because a hotel is a transitory dwelling, it suggests a time away from one’s responsibilities or routine. As a dream symbol it could reflect a need for rest and reflection. Depending on the details of the dream, specific information can be ascertained.

For example, if the hotel is luxurious it suggests prosperity and positive decision-making. However, if the hotel is rundown and inadequate, it may reflect a time of uneasiness and depravation. Whether the hotel in your dream represented a retreat or escapism is for you to determine by examining your current daily reality. Finally, a hotel may refer to a temporary stage in life or be a form of compensation with which the dreamer eases the anxiety and stress experienced during the day.... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Fear

We are confronted with many different fears in dreams, but they always refer to obstacles that are a mirror of our everyday—often unconscious—fears and insecurities. Nightmares often have physical causes; we have eaten too much, smoked too much, drunk too much alcohol. Often it is fear of illness (hypochondria), that needs to be overcome.

It is important to determine what made you become frightened.

Usually, this is about literal fear, or about undoing a mistake. On the other hand, such a dream might also suggest letting go of unnecessary fears. Hair

(see Body)

Personal strength (as with Samson).

Long hair: Equates to the wisdom and sagacity that comes through a long, well-lived life, especially if the color is gray. Alternatively, prosperity. In Asia, long hair was so valuable that it was used as currency.

Cutting: Drastic life changes. Many religious orders mark initiation rites through the cutting of hair, notably of monks and nuns (see Religions).

Power: In Tantric Oriental traditions, undoing the hair was a way to access the forces of creation and destruction. Also, in European folklore it was believed that a witch could increase the power of her spell by letting down her hair during its casting (see Incantation).

Consider the texture and style for further symbolic clues.

For example, hair brought up in a very tight bun reveals someone who is prim, sometimes to the point of restrictiveness. Disheveled hair, on the other hand, exposes confusion and a flurry of activity-. Dyed hair reveals someone concealing true thoughts, and greasy hair suggests a person with a “slick” disposition.

Baldness: Too much thought, or possibly a visual metaphor for “pulling your hair out.”

Being cut by a barber: x\ttention to details, and being meticulous in your efforts especially with regard to personal appearances.

Wigs: A false line of reasoning.... The Language of Dreams

The Complete Guide to Interpreting Your Dreams

Bird

(see also entries for particular birds: e.g. Eagle, Falcon.

(1) A bird may represent the sweet directness and simplicity’ of Nature, unpretentious and contented £is-ness\ In this case, your dream may be telling you w’hat you need to make room for in your life and in your fundamental attitudes. For example, the bird may be seen (or, indeed, heard) as calling you to an uncomplicated but holistic state of being, in which consciousness and body - spirit and matter - are completely attuned. This call will undoubtedly come if consciousness (brain) has become detached from the more primitive or primal layers of being (body, instinct. Nature).

(2) It may be that the bird signifies an entry into, or an invitation to enter, realms of spiritual power (symbolized by the sky). (In religious traditions that focus on a supreme sky-god — as in pre-modem Siberia - there is invariably a shaman, a person who is regarded as maintaining order and well-being in the human community’ and in the individual by maintaining a proper communication between the human wrorld and the spirit world (see also Spirit(s).) The shaman is said to fly - to make contact w ith spirits or the skv-god himself - and his emblem is often a bird, sometimes w orn in the form of a bird-mask.) See also Flying. Shaman.

(3) Because of its association with the shaman figure, a bird may symbolize some energy or function w’ithin your psyche that can bring vou healing or w holeness or balance.

(4) If the bird in the dream is taking wing, ask yourself if you, or some part of you, needs to take wing. Perhaps you are beginning to feel

shackled by circumstances. Perhaps it is a particular component of your unconscious psyche that needs to be given its freedom - that is, accepted into consciousness and incorporated into your (external) life. (Sky is often a symbol of consciousness, contrasted with earth or sea, which may be symbols of the unconscious.)

(5) If the bird is descending from the sky to you, you may need to consider another piece of bird symbolism. In mythology a bird, or a winged god (like the Roman Mercury), may serve as a messenger from the supreme deity. In psychological terms this may mean your dream is letting you know that your unconscious is offering you some great truth, some recipe for your healing, a solution of your problem(s), or the key to a new and fuller life.

Sometimes such a messenger bird is associated with the sun. The sun is a natural symbol of the source of truth (Might’) and of new life.

(6) Possibly, a bird may be a sexual symbol. Freud saw it as a symbol of the male penis; and for men who are accustomed to speaking of attractive women as ‘birds’, a bird in a dream may presumably have sexual meaning.

(7) A black bird, in addition to representing in a general way something in your unconscious, may symbolize the feminine in a negative aspect. See also Woman.

(8) Carrion birds — vultures, crows, ravens and the like — are associated with death. Dreams do sometimes predict an event in the outside world, but such dreams are rare.

If death is referred to in a dream it is more likely to express your anxiety about death - your own or someone else’s.

Alternatively, the unconscious mav be telling you that some phase of your life, some habitual attachment or negative attitude, has gone on long enough, and the time is ripe for a change. In other words, the dream is calling for the death of something within you, to make way for a new development in your life and / or in your personality. See also Vulture.... Biting

(1) Biting is a symbol of aggressiveness.

If you are doing the biting and it feels good, the dream may be expressing anger that arises out of repression. What is the repressed part of you that is craving - and undoubtedly deserves - recognition and expression in your outer life?

(2) If vou arc being bitten, what is ‘biting’ you? What is bothering you in your life, or what is the inner problem that you need to resolve? Bear in mind that everything in a dream is usually an aspect of yourself. Therefore, both what is biting and what is being bitten need to be both identified and reconciled. In other words, the biting means there is some inner conflict, which will usually be between vour conscious ego and something in your unconscious.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Fairy

Fairies represent the extraordinary powers of the human soul. Concretely, the prodigious capacity for imagination. They invite us to use all our qualities, announcing projects that up until now seemed undoable. However, if you have too much fun in the fairy world—looking to flee from your frustrations this way—you run the risk of losing sense of reality. Flying

Imagining that you are flying signals the arrival of change that will be very beneficial for you. The action of flying, however, implies the desire to evolve, to connect with the essence of yourself to progress spiritually. Further, it denotes that you have undone something that was worrying you.

It is a dream from which you leave with optimism and renewed strength, with a stimulating sensation of liberty. It also indicated the need to discover, to invent, and to do new things. This type of image foretells success, the completion of objections and overcoming difficulties, and encourages the dreamer to action (it is the time to fly by one’s self). However, you should not forget the Greek myth from Icarus; he who tried to go too high, his ambition brought him to a fatal destination. Further, if the protagonist is a young woman, it announces the break from relations in her couple.

In antiquity, if a person dreamt of flying, it was considered that he had entered into the sphere of the immortal gods. The Native Americans, the Babylonians, the Hindus, the Tibetan Buddhists, and many other peoples believed that the world had the ability to abandon the physical body during sleep. During these astral voyages, the psychic body could fly to other dimensions, communicate with people of a certain spiritual belief or learn of the souls that once were angels and divinities. Some scientists believe that these voyages are factual and that there exists the possibility to verify them empirically.

Montse dreamed: “I discovered with astonishment that I could fly. I just had to move three steps ahead and push myself a little forward; I didn’t even have to swing my arms. The wind marked my direction and I was able to feel the incredible sensation, I felt happy, free, powerful... Around me there were no birds, nor sounds; I was on my own in the immensity of the blue sky, flying over a sea in calm blue, yet brighter. Suddenly, I saw a group of dolphins jumping joyfully over silver waves. I awoke smiling, with a very pleasant sensation.”

Dreaming that you are flying is associated with liberty, the desire to elevate yourself from the earthly bindings and conquer the heaviness of reality.

It is a dream of evolution, which reveals you need to freely express yourself, to create... Montse, by profession a designer, had this dream a few days before completing a design for an important magazine, very artistic and vanguardist, renowned with many awards... A few days before she had felt very pressured and tired; however, her dream calmed her and revealed her creative capacity and her strength of expression. Dolphins are a symbol of intelligence that s related to clarity and purity of thought. The face that there were jumping through the water (entering and leaving) indicated the level of connection Montse had established between her conscious and subconscious.

Dreams of flights also match an interest in spiritual evolution. Curiously, through this period, Montse had given some tries in this direction, with courses on growth and personal overcoming, in which she learned much about herself.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

House

Anything that is a home in a dream connects to your sense of self.

A house is a clear reflection of identity at the time of the dream.

The sense of identity that the dream is trying to express relates directly to the qualities of the house as it appears in the dream.

A house from your past and / or childhood relates to your identity as it was generated at the time you lived there.

A house from your imagination also relates to your sense of self, and you must use the context of the dream to inform you of the meaning to associate with it.

A mansion is an expanded sense of self, while something small or more rundown is asking you to look at issues of self-worth.

A house under construction is the self being built up, whereas one that is being destroyed takes on the view of deconstruction or reinvention.

The same ideas should be applied to any living space, from an apartment to a hotel room, a great big house or a hovel.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Pencil

This is a dream about communication that is changeable or impermanent.

A pencil symbolically connects with communication issues.

The fact that they are erasable adds an element of impermanence to the meaning and therefore a lack of commitment. By varying the pressure applied with a pencil, you can create different shades of gray, which implies a level of subtlety and textural meaning to the communication represented by this symbol in a dream.

If you are using a pencil so that errors can be fixed, you may be dreaming about a desire to undo something not aligned with your original intention. Rope

This symbolizes the potential to do a great variety of structural adjustments in your life by keeping resources close at hand. Rope is a magnificent tool that allows you to do a number of things; the most common is the tying up of objects that would otherwise be separate. In the world of symbols, what you tie together with rope might be anything from ideas to emotions.

The rope itself is the potential to execute some measure of control over situations that feel somewhat chaotic. What the rope is doing in the dream will offer deeper meaning. Make sure to pay special attention to how the rope is knotted, as a knot is evidence of past efforts to control things that may not have been as effective as desired. Remember too that any knot can be undone with the right amount of effort.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Town

Freud saw in dream images of towns an all-embracing symbol of women; the symbol might be inviting or forbidding, according to whether the streets are brightly lit or dark and empty. For Jung, the image of a town evokes the unconscious and an urge to explore your connections with other people. For some dream analysts, the dream town—just like the dream house or city—is a representation of the self. How you feel about being in your dream town can reflect your sense of well-being or dissatisfaction in real life.

If your town or city has rundown slums or dilapidated houses, this can represent a refusal to keep up appearances; but if the town or city is taken as a representation of the self, seeing yourself in the slums is an indicator of either low self-esteem or a desire to explore unknown parts of yourself.

To dream of the gutter signifies degradation and unhappiness with yourself or with others. To find articles of value in the gutter in your dream signifies that current difficulties will teach you a valuable and important lesson. On the other hand, seeing yourself in the rich quarter or prosperous suburbs may suggest optimism and a good level of self-esteem. If, however, you are just passing through rich areas in your dream, your dreaming mind may be reminding you that there is more to life than simply material satisfaction.

If the town is on a hill in your dreams, this is a Jungian symbol of wisdom. The town’s high position may also express satisfaction with your progress in waking life.... The Element Encyclopedia

Reincarnation

Throughout his life, Jung admitted his strong fascination with the theory of reincarnation but never declared himself for or against the idea. We simply don’t know whether he believed in past lives, nor can we say whether dreams reflect images from past lives. There are certain dreams set in a past time or place unfamiliar to you that you may find extremely hard to explain away as being merely symbolism, metaphor or allegory. There are those who do believe the dream state can be a gateway to past lives and that dreams featuring events before you were born are snapshots of past lives. It is said that these kinds of dreams, also known as karmic dreams, are incredibly real and intense. There’s a certain ’grand dream’ feeling that often accompanies them.

Even as the dream is taking place, you may be feeling a sense of awe and wonder. You awaken knowing that this dream is very special and that it relates to something about your distant past. There’s an inescapable feeling that the dream is about a past life.

In most cases, it is impossible to prove beyond doubt that a dream relates to a past life experience, as your dream is unlikely to give you the facts needed to prove them with public records of births, marriages and deaths. In the end, it simply comes down to a gut feeling, an unshakable belief that comes from deep within you. Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, what is important here is what you take from the dream as a lesson for your current life.

If the goal of reincarnation is to improve karma—the Buddhist principle of cosmic reward or punishment for the things you have done or left undone in past lives—then this dream offers you an opportunity for personal growth.... The Element Encyclopedia
