Barefoot

In a dream, it means toiling in one’s life and exhaustion. This is thus interpreted if one does not actually see himself going through the motion of taking off his shoes and walking barefooted. Otherwise, in that case, it means that he will receive an appointment to a high ranking position. Walking barefooted in a dream is also interpreted as unloading one’s burdens and relief from pressure, divorce or death in one’s family.

If one sees himself traveling barefooted, it represents a debt that he could not repay.

If one sees himself walking with one foot bare and the second fitted in the dream, it means breaking up a business partnership.

Barefoot

You need to be more grounded in your life and experience a level of vulnerability around immediate choices in life. Feet connect to how grounded you feel. They can also indicate issues around how you are maneuvering through your current life choices. There is a direct connection between where you put your feet and where you go.

If your feet are exposed to the elements, it leaves them vulnerable to injury, but can also help connect you more organically to the ground beneath your feet. This image also connotes feeling more down-to-earth and implies being laid-back and relaxed.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Foot

In a dream, feet represent man’s uprightness, for with them one stands erect. Ifanything happens to one’s feet in a dream, it will reflect on his financial standing, work, toiling, his boss or his delegations.

If one sees his feet pointing toward the heavens in a dream, it could denote the death of his child.

If one’s feet turn green, it means that he will suffer business losses. Ifone sees himself committing loathsome sexual acts with his feet in a dream, it means that he will pursue an unlawful sexual intercourse. Walking bear footed in a dream means toiling in life, difficulties and fatigue.

If one sees himself eating the foot of another human being in a dream, it means that he will become a close friend with him, acquire his intercession, reap success from his connection, fulfill his needs, receive benefits in his travels, or if he qualifies, he may preside over a group of poor people or guide seamen to their catch.

If he is a poor person, it means that his benefits to others are greater than if he were a rich person.

If a rich man sees himself eating the foot of another person in a dream, it means illness, weakness or blindness. As for evildoers, eating someone’s foot in a dream means imprisonment, sorrow and blame.

If one sees one ofhis feet turning into a stone, it means that he will be deprived of its use.

If one steps over a king or a ruler in a dream, it means that he will step over a coin of money that carries the figure of such a ruler.

If one’s foot is amputated in a dream, it means that he will loose half of his wealth.

If both his feet are amputated in the dream, it means that he will lose all of his wealth, or that he may die shortly. One’s feet in a dream also represent his parents or the leaders of the land.

If one’s foot is fractured in a dream, it means that he should not near the people of authorities for some days or he better leave town for sometime and pray for his safety.

If a sick person sees his foot broken in a dream, it may mean his death. Ifone sees one of his feet longer than the other in a dream, it means that he will travel and profit from his journey, or receive the needed help during his journey.

If he is rich, it means that he will become sick.

If a poor person sees himselfhaving four legs in a dream, it means that he will travel and receive help to accomplish his goals.

A rich person in that case may get sick, or it could mean longevity. Walking on three feet in a dream means either that one will grow to be old, or that through an ailment, he will not die until he uses a cane to help him walk.

If a ruler or a judge sees himself having many legs in a dream, it means that he has many helpers.

If one’s feet turn into iron in a dream, it means longevity and prosperity.

If they turn into glass in a dream, it means that he will live a short life and suffer a debilitating illness.

If they turn gold in the dream, it means that he will use them to seek a lost property or a desired wealth.

If they turn silver in the dream, it means that he is a philanderer and he will live in poverty, for lust for women and wealth cannot exist together.

If one’s feet turn into led in the dream, it means that he may suffer from paralysis, unless if the dream contains other elements that denote actions which are pleasing to God Almighty.

If one sees his foot without a covering skin in the dream, it means longevity. In a dream, one’s toes represent good deeds. Experiencing foot pain in a dream means sins and punishment or repentance and endurance.

(4) Feet may symbolize contact with Nature, including instinctual drives and instinctive wisdom. Feet are at the opposite ends of the body to the head, which symbolizes intellectuality and fantasizing. Intellectuals typically have difficulty in assimilating the instinctive wisdom of their unconscious, but desperately need what the unconscious has to offer: without it they are lopsided (or top-heavy, if you will). Keep vour feet on the ground and your head in the air? No, that means a split in the psyche. Rather, keep your head in your feet!

Left And Right

You may have a dream in which left and right become significant.

If this is the case, bear in mind that if you are right-handed, the right hemisphere of the brain is thought to control the left side of the body and this part of the brain is instinctive, artistic and intuitive. The left side of the body therefore indicates these qualities and in dreams represents the parts of yourself that are less expressed, such as the unconscious. In right-handed people, the left hemisphere of the brain is thought to control the right side of the body, and this part of the brain is believed to be logical and functional. The right side of the body therefore represents the dominant, conscious and well-expressed side of yourself. Dreams can also use a play on what is right or left to suggest opposites or conflicts within yourself. The left usually suggests the external world of activity and the environment, whilst the right parts of your unconscious suggest struggling to express yourself. A few people might also find that in some dreams one side of their body represent the feelings and attitudes they absorbed from their mother, and the other side what they absorbed from their father.... Left, Right

Left:

if we are right handed, the left represents the less dominant or expressed side of oneself, or the parts of our nature we try to hide or suppress.

If we write or knock in a nail using our right hand, we will hold the paper or nail with our left. So left leg or arm frequently has this sense of representing the supponive but less dominant functions in us. Our confidence may suppon our activity as a salesperson, so may be depicted as being on the left.

Right:

the dominant, confident, conscious, exterior or expressed side of self; lightness; correct social behaviour, moral.

Dreams can also use a play on what is right and left to illustrate a polarity or opposites. Our internal world of feelings, memories and values—the left; our external world of activity and environment—the right.

A secondary choice— left; the right’ choice at the time—right. Pans of self unconscious or shadowy—left; our conscious known self—right.

The immoral, selfish, wrong action—left; the moral, right action—right.

Example: ‘On my right are three monks, on my left sits a beautiful, shapely blonde. I am in the centre and I see a road, which leads to the right and a beautiful sunlit valley in the distance’ (from Dreams Your Magic Mirror by Elsie Sechrist). Here right and left represent not only choice between sexual pleasure and religious discipline, but also the polar opposites of spiritual and material. Although in the dream there is a movement to the right, to find equilibrium we often have to take a way between the opposites.

Idioms: two left feet; keep on the right side of somebody; in one’s right mind, in the right; mister right; set somebody right; right hand man; right in the head, stan on the right foot; give one’s right arm. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Nightmares And Scary Dreams: Frightening Dreams Are Your Friend

Even Nightmares Have a Helpful Purpose. A nightmare is easy to recognize: You wake up feeling anything from mild fright to a complete terror that can leave you screaming. Yet even dreams that scare you come to help. The topic of a dream may well bring up a serious and intense message. However, the message comes from a friendly source—your own psyche—whose purpose is to help and support you. No matter how serious or scary the subject of the dream, the communication from your psyche is an attempt to help you resolve the matter or get through a challenging situation.

WHY A DREAM TURNS INTO A NIGHTMARE. Most nightmares are simply mirrors of your internal fears and anxieties. Paradoxically, as the following reasons explain, it is those very fears and anxieties that “flip” a dream that is otherwise benign into a nightmare.

Think of a dream as a carriage transporting a needed insight about an important problem; the carriage is merely a vehicle for the helpful message. However, the topic of the dream terrifies you. The topic could be about a failing relationship or a career that is falling apart. Because of your terror, as you watch the carriage approach, the shadows of your fears make the carriage look scary. You do not notice the carriage is driven by your psyche, who approaches as a friend and just wants to help.

One way of coping with an anxiety or fear is to distance yourself from it—to push it away. This is a normal reaction. Yet the very act of distancing yourself from a scary topic that a dream may address is what “transforms” a normal dream image into a scary one. It is like a tasty dish that curdles, and your fear curdles the dream dish.

THERE ARE ONLY FRIGHTENED DREAMERS. Though it is natural to run from what scares you, the very act of doing so is what often creates a nightmare. That is why one way of looking at most nightmares is to say, “There are no scary dreams—only frightened dreamers.” If we could put aside all of our fears, there would be few nightmares or frightening dreams.

WHAT CAUSES NIGHTMARES. Mild to severe stress tends to be the main underlying cause of most frightening dreams.

• Daily Stress. Daily stress that ramps up your feelings is the most common reason behind a nightmare.

• Out-of-Control Fear and Anxiety. Like a wheel spinning out of control, negative emotions can unbalance your perceptions and lead to nightmares.

• Emotional Dissonance. The daily push-pull between competing feelings or choices is called “emotional dissonance.” If making a choice feels so unpalatable and impossible that no choice seems right, the pressure can drive you to the edge. This form of extreme anxiety, related to difficult or impossible choices, often invites nightmares.

• Physical or Mental Imbalance. Conditions like fever or depression can produce bad dreams. When the condition passes, the nightmares may disappear.

• Traumatic Events. Repeated bad dreams can happen after a painful event that leaves you feeling vulnerable, such as losing a loved one or the loss of a home after a natural disaster. As the psyche tries to digest the pain, the mind may replay the event as a nightmare. Such dreams are the psyche’s attempt to digest the painful feelings while you sleep. As a person heals and increases their coping skills, the bad dreams lessen and eventually disappear.

• The Nightmares of Those with an Artistic or Sensitive Temperament. Highly sensitive and creative individuals tune in more deeply to the world’s pain and suffering, and as a result, they often report nightmares. A man at a seminar shared his constant nightmares about war scenes and mangled bodies, even though he lived a normal life and worked as a bus driver. Digging deeper, he began to see that he was tuning in to the daily pain that he saw on the faces of his passengers. Witnessing their distress gave his sensitive heart emotional indigestion, which he experienced as frequent nightmares.

• Traumatic Stress. Those with a medical condition called post-traumatic stress disorder, such as combat veterans or rape victims, can have nightmares that are different in content and structure to regular nightmares. Experiencing extreme forms of trauma can produce nightmares that are more severe and that disrupt sleep cycles, which regular nightmares do not. While researching the nightmares of combat veterans, I created presleep stories as a sleep aid that attempts to restore the normal sleep cycles of combat veterans; details are available at InterpretADream.com.

NIGHTMARES: THREE TYPES

Like other dreams, nightmares can be distinguished by their origin and purpose. The most common nightmares engage your struggle to grow in character and personality. A few bad dreams deal with specific life fears, and fewer still predict actual tragic events.

1: The Most Common Type of Nightmare

A NIGHTMARE THAT UNVEILS A NEGATIVE CHARACTER TRAIT. Facing an unpleasant truth about yourself is never easy. Everyone glosses over shortcomings like anger, acting stupid, or failing at something, and no one wants to face a weakness. As a result, when a dream holds up a mirror about a trait that does not jive with your “I am great” image, your normal reaction is to say, “That can’t be me.” In colloquial terms, such nightmares expose your blind spots, which is an unpleasant experience for everyone.

For example, a man had a nightmare about a raging bull charging through his grocery store and wondered if the dream was a warning that vandals would soon raid his premises. Since most dreams are about you—the dreamer, he came to see that the bull was a metaphor for his short temper when dealing with employees. Seeing himself as an out-of-control bull was not easy, but the image produced the desired effect. The man softened his attitude and as a result, the atmosphere at the grocery store became more relaxed and as a bonus, his sales improved.

When a nightmare acts as a mirror of a not-so-great trait, it invites you to grow into a better version of yourself. After an initial “ouch,” you realize that the dream is an ally, helping you correct what could cause problems down the road.

2: A Scary Dream That You Meet Less Often

FRIGHTENING DREAMS THAT PORTRAY ACTUAL, SPECIFIC FEARS. One of the functions of dreaming is to process your emotions. When a fear gets out of hand, a nightmare that relates to that fear is the equivalent of a pressure cooker’s safety valve that allows the hot steam to escape. In this case, the experience of having the nightmare, in and of itself, becomes an outlet for your exploding feelings.

Acting like an emotional digestion system, fear-processing nightmares let you experience a fear as an external picture that your mind can examine and label. A “see it, name it, and label it” nightmare helps you digest your fear, and as a result, whatever tied you up in knots begins to unravel. Such nightmares handle actual fears, one piece at a time, until they disappear. You may encounter a sequence of nightmares during a time of enormous challenge such as a divorce or the sudden loss of a loved one. Then one day, a morning arrives when you feel a sense of peace. You do not know why you feel better, but you know you have turned a corner. Your dream digestion system—that you experienced as nightmares—has done its work.

Nightmares that deal with true fears come with a bonus. A bad dream that relates to a painful issue can include an insight about how to handle what frightens you. A woman kept dreaming of a terrified young girl who walks to the edge of a murky black pond in the middle of the night. As she is about to fall into the deep black water, she sees a light in the distance and becomes aware that the light can lead her to safety. Upon discussion, those images brought back memories of the dreamer’s terror of being raped as a young girl. The light in the distance made her realize that she could resolve the unexpressed pain that had been festering for years. Thanks to the dream’s metaphor of a distant light as a place of safety, the dreamer became aware that she needed a counselor who could help her confront the emotional leftovers of her childhood trauma.

3: Actual Warnings—A Rare Type of Frightening Dream

FRIGHTENING DREAMS AS TRUE WARNINGS. Most scary dreams are stress-related, a few may tussle with your actual fears, while a miniscule percent can be actual warnings about something dire. Nightmares can warn you about the possibility of a real tragedy that may involve death, serious illness, or a natural disaster—whether in your life, someone around you, or in your community. Or sometimes they are warnings about less serious matters.

LESS URGENT, YET TRUE WARNING DREAMS. Before examining frightening dreams that are dire warnings, let’s take a look at dreams that address issues which are not life threatening, yet still urgent. For example, a dream may give you a heads up about how your words hurtfully impacted another’s feelings that you missed, and as a painful issue, it becomes cloaked in scary images. Or, a dream may point out what will happen if you keep eating three desserts a day; seeing what you look like in a dream, with an extra fifty pounds on you, can be pretty scary. Or, a frightening dream may point out a topic such as an unpleasant relationship, that you have put on hold, which now needs attention. Because these less urgent issues deal with topics that make you anxious, the warning dream can still be experienced as a nightmare. Such not-so-dire warning dreams touch upon intense topics that are not life threatening, but can still intensely shake you up.

DREAM EXAMPLE: A FRIGHTENING DREAM ABOUT A NORMAL ISSUE—MY DAUGHTER IS IN A CAR CRASH. A mother dreamed that her daughter was in a car crash, and from a distance, she watched as her child was taken to the hospital. Afterward, a doctor announced that her daughter was okay. The dream felt so intense that the mother woke up terrified, fearing for her daughter’s safety. The mother brought up her dream at a conference. A conversation brought out how, at the time of the dream, her only daughter announced that she was about to relocate because her new husband had been transferred to a job a thousand miles away. Since mom and daughter had never lived more than a few streets apart, the mother experienced a nightmare that registered her shock and distress at the news. Nothing terrible had happened. The nightmare simply registered the mother’s reaction to the sudden, unexpected news of being separated from her daughter.

A TRUE WARNING NIGHTMARE ABOUT A POTENTIAL TRAGEDY. Though extremely rare, a nightmare can be a warning about an actual tragedy as a type of ESP dream, as in the following example.

DREAM EXAMPLE: A NIGHTMARE AS A TRUE WARNING—MY DAUGHTER IS IN A CAR CRASH. Another mother had several dreams that showed her only teenage daughter getting into a car with friends, then seeing the car in a deadly crash. Each time she had the dream, she debated whether to talk to her daughter about safe driving with her teenage friends but decided against it. Sadly, the repetitive dreams turned out to be an actual warning and she lost her only daughter. Meeting this woman at a seminar, I marveled at the grace with which the mother had resolved to learn about dreams, and to use future warnings for herself and loved ones. That took great courage.

Only the divine hand can know whether a tragedy foreshadowed in a dream can be averted. However, no matter how a predicted event turns out, such actual warning nightmares serve a constructive purpose. On the one hand, they give a dreamer time to build up their strength and cushion the shock of the actual event, if it comes about. On the other hand, according to stories exchanged in dream circles, such warning dreams can, at times, avert the real danger.

True dream warnings about dire events are extremely rare. They have noticeable features like repetition, intense emotions and literal details.

Stranger

The interpretation of seeing and interacting with a stranger, or strangers, in your dream depends on the details of your dream and on your personal belief system. Some Eastern cultures believe that the strangers in your dreams are spirits from another dimension. These spirits may be teaching you lessons or giving you specific messages.

The more modern approach to interpreting a dream with strangers in it is that they represent different sides or unfamiliar aspects of our personality.

The best way to tell is to “check inside” of yourself and simply try to understand the message of this dream. Whether the message is coming from your unconscious or from a different reality might be irrelevant.

The lessons gained through a dream are far more important then where they came from. Just remember: The mind that dreamt the dream also knows its source and meaning (and that is YOUR own mind). See also: People... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

The dreams in which unknown individuals are present, playing a role in the oneiric scene, are often messages that the unconscious uses to represent aspects of your personality. Sometimes, it portrays person who behaves as you would like to yourself. In other times, strangers have negative characteristics that are nothing but facets of your personality that displease or disappoint you.

Stranger

A person unknown to you is still representing a character aspect of your personality, even if his or her identity is concealed or the person is a stranger. When making an interpretation about a person you don’t know, you must focus on what you actually do know. What the person is doing in your dream and how you feel about that will give you the essence of your interpretation. Whatever message your dream is presenting you with, the fact that it comes from a stranger or a person with a concealed identity indicates that the unconscious is not quite ready to reveal what is being called into action in your current situation. More will be revealed; we learn in stages and increments and often resist change, so be prepared for initial levels of fear to come up around this type of imagery.

The unknown assailant who chases us may simply be trying to give us our forgotten lunch money or an umbrella because it is raining. When there are clear personality traits apparent and the person’s identity is unknown to you, it likely points to an area of development within your own personal makeup. An angry or aggressive stranger may point to an integration of that energy into consciousness.

A more helpful or gentle stranger indicates that softer elements are being called into prominence. Whatever end of the continuum your dream stranger is on, be prepared to consider the necessity and power of the energy he or she is embodying in the dream.

A deliberate concealment of identity can also indicate a matter of the unconscious tricking the conscious into hearing a difficult piece of information; for just as in life, it is sometimes easier to hear impactful news from a stranger than from someone we love.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Stranger

Your dreaming mind may often conjure up images of strangers, unknown people or people whose faces are hidden by masks as representations of the shadow, private and sometimes shocking side of your personality. This is especially the case if the strangers are inadequate or sinister in some way, or if they are burglars, intruders or criminals.

If such images appear, it is important not to ignore them as you need to acknowledge these dream figures as reflections of an aspect of yourself in order to face up to your fears.

If you do not do so, you will continually come up against feelings of insecurity and low self- esteem in waking life. The stranger in a dream represents that part of yourself that you do not know. There may be feelings of conflict or tension but you need to deal with these dark images before you can progress in waking life. Jung referred to the shadow as the dark side of a person that you would like to keep hidden—’the thing a person has no wish to be’. The shadow can be thought of as an instinctive and primitive side of your personality that you are trying to repress.

Dream strangers therefore generally represent aspects of your character that you either haven’t consciously acknowledged or that you have neglected. This is why they appear unfamiliar or strange in your dream. How these strangers look and behave will give you an important clue to the nature of the problem area.

If a sinister figure does appear in your dream, try not to avoid confronting it. Notice how it tries to control the action in your dream. Observe what negative aspects of yourself it may be addressing and try to address them in your waking life.

Self-destructive urges are less likely to overwhelm you if you are prepared to confront them.

If dream strangers represent aspects of your personality any spacemen, aliens or extraterrestrials in your dream usually indicate that you are feeling threatened by alien forces or situations. Starting a dialogue with them should help you understand them better and allay your fears of the unknown. The same applies if a foreigner appears in your dream speaking an unfamiliar language.... Touching

The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Touching

Being aware of, becoming conscious; meeting and becoming intimate; contacting. Touching also sometimes shows a linking up with something, as when a person touches a power line and gets shocked. This suggests we have ‘touched’ feelings or drives which are a shock to us.

Example: ‘Now I sit on a bed. Near me, looking at a book I am holding is a woman I know. I realise as we talk that her foot is touching mine. As my wife is on my left across the room I feel uncomfortable about this. Now the woman has her left hand on my penis.’ (Anthony B). Often directly or indirectly sexual, as in the example.

The absence of touching in otherwise intimate scene: can suggest lack of ability to rcach out or express one’s needs for contact; a passive attitude in which you want the other person, or a more automatic aspect of oneself, to take responsibility and risks.

Active avoidance of touching: as illustrated in the following example, shows feelings of anger.

The anger may be passive, but such avoidance of contact is as vicious as hitting.

The dreamer moves towards a healthier state by expressing her anger. Example: ‘My husband came over to me with his arm out to touch me but I was so angry I put my arm up to shield myself from his touch and then began to throw things at him to express how angry I was feeling’ (Susie R).

Example: The man was so superior in his attitude, and patronisingly arrogant about the lost children, that I cursed him with a touch, saying “May you lose children of your own” ‘ (Albie G). Touching is also a means of communicating our emotions or intentions. This can be love, anger, sympathy or, as with Albie. a statement which attempts to break down insularity.
