Father

The dream images representing father are many: God, a god, a giant, a tyrant, executioner, devil. Pan—and of course father.

A child is, figuratively, like a growing plant. It takes in lumps of external material and transforms them into its own being.

A child unconsciously either takes father or mother as its main model for structuring its behaviour and aims. But also, huge areas of our basic self revolve around mother and father. Even not having an available father leaves an enormous imprint in this archetypal area. Our father in our dreams therefore is most often the overall effect, habits, traits, which arise from our experience—or lack of it—of our father. Father is also the great figure of original authority and strength in our life. He therefore depicts our relationship with outside authority or power. Struggle or seeking to placate father: may show how we deal with authority.

Our baby or child self has no restraints and, in its relationship with father, at times felt urges which as an adult we might find hard to believe or accept. In our dreams we frequently release these urges. Killing father: expressing anger, getting rid of him so there is no competition for mother, gaining your own ability to make decisions and be independent. At some point we need to kill him inside us to claim whatever strength we can from our experience of him and become independent. Sex with father: for the woman fulfilment of childhood desires to possess; for a man desire to receive his love.

The father may not easily have shown his love, so the child becomes desperate to receive. Burying father most likely same as killing; or facing his death and one’s own independence. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Father

If the relationship with father has been successful in waking life, the dream image will tend to be a positive one. Father represents authority and the conventional forms of law and order.

If the relationship with father has been a difficult or negative one, there may be some resistance in waking life to resolving the various conflicts that will have arisen. Often this can be accomplished spontaneously in dreams. In a man’s life father becomes a role model, whether appropriate or not.

It is often only when the individual realizes that he is not being true to his own nature that dreams can point the way to a more successful life and perhaps an understanding of his father. In a woman’s life, father is the ‘pattern’ on whom she bases all later relationships with men. When she appreciates that she longer need use this pattern, she is often able to work out in dreams a more appropriate way to have a mature relationship. Father

The presence of your father in a dream may not be symbolic at all, but a straightforward representation of him, or of the way you see / remember him (which may owe more to your subjective distortions than to what your father actually is or was). In any case, the reason for your father appearing in the dream will be shown by the part he plays in the dream story.

(1) Specially for men, father may be a conscience figure.

If this is the case, bear in mind that your father’s prohibitions and commands will probably represent either conventional moral opinions which may have no relevance to your true nature or ‘destiny5, or irrational fears and feelings of guilt that began to take shape in you in early childhood. (On Oedipus complex)

(2) For a woman, father may figure in a dream as one who generates affection (see Introduction, page 26).

(3) If father features in the dream as a protector, it may be that you need to ‘grow up’ and rely on your own resources. After all, life can hurt you only if you let it, only if you identify with your emotional self instead of with that deep layer of yourself that is immune to life’s pains and perils.

(4) If you dream of your father dying, this may be a wish-fulfilling dream. Feelings of hostility towards parents are common, stemming

from childhood feelings of resentment or envy. See also Dead / Death, section (3).

(5) Frequent appearances of either parent, or both, in dreams may be a sign that you have not thrown off an infantile over-dependence on them (see (3) above). Jung cites a young man’s dream in which the man’s father appeared as a drunken driver, smashing his car into a wall. This was the exact opposite of the real father, who was a most respectable person, righdy - but too much - respected by the son. What the unconscious was doing through the dream was dethroning the father in order to enable the son to achieve a proper sense of himself as a person in his own right, with his own unique destiny and value.

(6) Father may be an animus figure, representing a woman’s (unconscious) masculine qualities. In this case, the dream may be suggesting that she should cultivate this contrasexual side of her nature. (For animus, see Brother / Sister, section (4))

(7) Father may, if highly respected (and properly so), appear in a dream as a Wise Old Man figure. See also Wise Old Man) For father represented by an animal, see Animal(s).... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Father

The interpretation of a dream whose central image is your father depends largely on the relationship that you have with him in real life. At a simple level, maybe the dream is offering you a bit of “fatherly” advice that you should consider. Or perhaps it refers to the masculine aspect of your personality, encouraging you to be more energetic.

If the father of the dreamer was ineffective as such, the dream may refer to an unconscious search for the father figure. However, if he was too strict, perhaps the dream is warning you not to repeat this behavior with yourself or with your own children. To dream of the death of your father may reflect your desire to break family ties and start being more independent. The father represents command, laws, and rules. In dreams, usually he appears through figures like a king, an emperor, a wise old man, the sun, or a weapon. Therefore, it symbolizes the world of moral precepts and prohibitions that restrain instincts. Thus, in dreams, the father often embodies traditional morality and the principle of authority.

It is no wonder, then, that in adolescence (formative period) it is very common for dreams of the father to appear, often as a hostile, tyrannical figure. According to Jung, this symbol played a crucial psychological role in the development of the individual. In contrast to the mother, which is the protection, security, and tenderness, the father symbolizes values closely linked to the masculine: risk, adventure, struggle, effort, rational inquiry, calculation, etc. In this respect, Freud emphasized the importance of the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus.

If the subject could not be separated properly from parental influence, it triggered a complex. According to his theories, in childhood (especially four to seven years) children experience a stage of incestuous desire for the mother. The complex arises when they do not overcome this stage and begin to harbor feelings of resentment, seeing the father figure as a rival to defeat. However, the Oedipus complex usually resolves itself during puberty. (See EAGLE, AUTHORITY, SWORD, FIRE, LIGHT, and TEACHER)... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Next to mothers, fathers usually exert the most powerful influence over our psychological makeup.

The appearance of the father or a father symbol in a dream is thus extraordinarily difficult to interpret, because the meaning depends so heavily on each individual’s experience with his or her own father.

At a general level we can say that fathers represent power, authority, caring, the law, responsibility, and tradition.

Father

The father represents the archetypal symbol of worldly authority and competence. For a man to dream of a father figure suggests that he may be searching for a role model, whether negative or positive. According to Freud, dreams that feature hostility towards the father figure could be explained by the Oedipus complex. Freud claimed that the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus was a symbolic representation of the psychological development of the male individual. He thought that children between the ages of four and seven went through a phase during which they developed an incestuous desire for the parent of the opposite sex; a young boy would therefore have feelings of resentment towards his father, whom he saw as a rival. Normally the Oedipus complex resolves itself by puberty, but in Freud’s view, the failure to achieve freedom from parental influence could result in the Oedipus complex lasting into later years.

If it does, it should be fairly apparent from the content of some of your dreams, especially if you are attacking, insulting or feeling envious towards your father.

Jung also believed the symbol of the father played a vital psychological role in waking life. He thought that a man dreaming of hostility towards his father was a positive sign, as it showed that the unconscious was dethroning the father so as to enable the dreamer to achieve a sense of self and be a person in his own right. A woman dreaming of a father figure is often dreaming of the pattern upon which all her future relationships are based; her dreams may encourage her to work out a more appropriate way to have mature relationships. The more difficult the relationship with her father, the harder this may be.

For men, a father may represent the conscience, or in Freudian terms, the superego.

If this is the case, bear in mind that your father’s prohibitions and commands will probably represent either conventional moral options that may lack relevance to your true nature or ‘destiny’, or irrational fears and feelings of guilt that began to take shape in early childhood. Of course, a dream about your father may simply express your current feelings for him and issues surrounding your relationship with him. The presence of your father may be a straightforward representation of him, or of the way you see or remember him. In any case, the reason for your father appearing in the dream will be shown by the part he plays in the dream story. Father Figure

For some people it was the father who was the ultimate arbiter of discipline and authority when growing up and any appearance of your father in your dreams may remind you of punishments he may have dished out in the past.

If the father figure was absent when you were growing up or your father never punished you severely or unfairly, your unconscious may summon up a father archetype to bring to your attention immature attitudes that are holding you back.

Your older brother, uncle or boss may assume the dream role of the archetypal father, a benevolent provider and protector who uses his authority fairly and wisely; in dreams, such figures may appear to dispense invaluable advice. Bear in mind, though, that the father figure can also abuse his authority and if father figures appear as brutes in your dreams, they may have been pointing to your own brutishness and selfishness.

If you had an authoritarian father, a wellknown dictator such as Hitler, Stalin or Chairman Mao may appear in your dreams representing that relationship.

If you dream about your boss, this may simply suggest anxieties you have about your work. Dream bosses, however, can also represent aspects of your father and dreams of being fired can recall parental rejection.

If you ask for a raise in your dream, this expresses a need for more attention and love in waking life, whilst a friendly boss reveals a longing for less responsibility.

If you are the boss in your dreams, this represents your desire for more dominance in a waking relationship.

If you rebel against your boss in your dream, this can be a positive sign, as rebelling against parental authority or challenging authority that is dictatorial and unjust is a healthy part of growing up and becoming a self-confident adult.

Houses are often represented as images of the dreamer; so a dream of a landlord or landlady, or someone else who actually owns your dream house, may suggest you are not feeling in control of your waking life; or perhaps someone, such as a partner or parent, is being overly dominant.... Father, Father Figure

Vision: Your father (or a father figure) is a symbol of your need for safety and security (particularly in women’s dreams).

For women who change partners frequently, the dream is the personification of a bad conscience (particularly if her father— when she was a child—was the primary disciplinarian).

If you yourself are the father, it means you will “create” a life. Speaking to your father: you have a suppressed longing to lean on someone or to be guided by someone. Seeing your own father: you feel you are bringing shame to your family and owe your father an apology. Dreaming about your deceased father: help is on the way or someone is making you very happy.

Depth Psychology: A father figure in a dream means a confrontation with your boss or with a person in authority. See Pastor, Physician, Priest, Teacher. You feel imprisoned. Sometimes the dream reminds you of a person who has stood by you and has given you advice in the past. What has your father contributed to the person you are today? For a woman, this is a prognostication of widowhood and deception.

To see an angel or a ghost appear in the sky, denotes the loss of kindred and misfortunes.

To see a female ghost on your right in the sky and a male on your left, both of pleasing countenance, signifies a quick rise from obscurity to fame, but the honor and position will be filled only for a short space, as death will be a visitor and will bear you off.

Ghost

Memories, feelings, guilt, which haunt us, parts of the wider awareness of the unconscious which attempt to communicate; the husks or influences from past traumas or events, which have been emptied of hurt and real influence, but still affect us; fantasies, hopes, longings we have given time to, and so filled with our life and sexual energy, and which now influence us. Ghost of living person: a sense of their thoughts or presence influencing one; haunted by desire for them, or a resentment or feeling about them.

A ghost which feels solid: the dreamer is ‘touching’ aspects of their own mind or awareness existing beyond preconceived ideas and beliefs.

Example: ‘So frequently do I dream of the house and the town I lived in as a child, I wonder if I do indeed haunt the house by dreaming of it. I must tell you I believe that a traumatic incident, which happened when I was 20, is involved. I was playing the piano downstairs when I heard a gun fired. On searching I found my father lying dead upstairs in an attic. He had shot his brains out. I took the scene in, never to be forgotten, in one horrified moment’ (Barbara T). Some people believe that, because of such incidents as described, in their dreams the living haunt a place. Seeing a ghost while awake can still be considered as connected with the dream process. Ghosts are often an expression of guilt feelings and pangs of conscience.

Dreaming of a haunted house indicates that guilt from the past is holding you back from accomplishing something you really want. Actually seeing a ghost, however, is an omen of good luck.

If you are frightened by a ghost, this could mean that mistakes in your past have “come back to haunt you.” It could also mean that intense pressure to do something against your principles could be put upon you by someone in a position of authority.

Ghost

You are dreaming of the memory or imprint of a former idea, concept, or person.

A ghost is defined as a remnant of a person’s energy that remains connected to the physical world after he or she has died. Some metaphysicians theorize that a spirit can be stuck here due to unfinished business or an untimely death. There are scientists who explore the possibility of ghosts as bumps in the electromagnetic field of energy that can sometimes be perceived by people who are living. No matter what camp you fall into, a ghost is symbolic of something from your past that continues to have a presence in your consciousness long after the event or person that inspired it has passed. This can include memories, habitual patterns, and even obsessions.

If the ghost is someone you know who is not actually dead, use the character aspect technique to discover what qualities are traits that you have let go of but that may still arise in your behavior or thought patterns from time to time. Someone who has actually passed away can be considered in the same fashion, but might represent the impact he or she had on you in life, whether positive or negative. This image in a dream could point to a need to face the ghosts of your past in the form of old choices and behaviors that still haunt you with regret.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Ghost

If ghosts appear in your dreams, they often symbolize unfinished business, just as ghosts—or the unsettled dead—are supposed to have unfinished business on earth, not having found their place in the afterlife. Because of a ghost’s ephemeral nature, being only partially visible to some and invisible to others, they can also represent uncertainty or a lack of clarity in your thinking. Another interpretation is that seeing ghosts in dreams is a way of facing your own mortality; for this reason they can be quite disturbing, but because they may offer evidence of life after death, they could be seen as offering some comfort. You can also look at a ghost as a shadow of yourself, your own dark nature personified; the side of yourself that you’d rather not face up to.

If you want to understand the significance of dreaming about ghosts, you need to look at how they behaved in your dream. Whilst most ghosts are invisible and silent, some ghosts are noisy and throw things around; these could represent your lack of control regarding things that are happening around you in waking life. Ghosts may interact with you in dreams, but often they will not do it directly. You may feel comforted by their appearance in your dream; you may feel stressed or afraid. They may be strangers, friends, relatives or famous people that have died—your relationship to them or how you feel about them will affect what they mean in your dream—for instance the ghost may be a nagging relative who is still very much alive, but casts a shadow over your life and is always trying to push you one way or another.

At times, ghosts represent those things that are unattainable or fleeting. If, however, the ghost feels solid, you may be touching aspects of your own mind or awareness that exist beyond your own preconceived ideas and beliefs. Ghosts of living people in your dream have nothing to do with the possibility of their death in the near future; such dreams suggest, rather, a sense of their thoughts or presence haunting you. Or perhaps you are haunted by desire for them or have unexpressed feelings about them. Alternatively, and particularly if you shrank from the ghost in your dream, could the specter have represented someone whom you once wronged, a ghost from the past that is still haunting your conscience despite your conscious efforts to push it to the back of your mind?... Ghost (spirit)

(see Death, Seance)

Residual feelings or uncertainties that you haven’t totally dealt with honestly or recognized.

Esoterically, the disembodied spirit of a person who has returned with a message for you, or to ask for your aid.

Something perceived as remote or unlikely (e.g., “ghost of a chance”). Memories of deceased friends, parents, and loved ones.

Undiscovered talents or portions of the self, especially those of a psychic nature. Jungian: Uncontrolled psychic forces or complexes.

Being possessed by a spirit: A neurosis or psychosis that overrides your normal actions and reactions. Alternatively, this dream may occur to someone who has a drinking problem as a warning not to let this spirit possess them.

A ghost town: This symbolizes a penchant for living in the past instead of fully handling the present.

The counsel here is to keep the good memories, let go of the rest, and start living fully again.

Ghost Of Someone Who Has Died

Some believe that the ghosts in their dreams are real representations of the dead. This is an unlikely explanation of such dreams. More likely, to dream of the ghost of someone who is departed represents a part of you that is unclear and that you do not understand. Ghosts can also be all that you have left of loved ones who are no longer alive, so they can offer you comfort by appearing in your dreams, representing a welcome opportunity to speak once again to that special person and to come to terms with the fact that they are gone. To dream of the ghost of someone who has died might also represent something that you wanted that is no longer in your reach. This dream is telling you to move on. Another explanation is that your unconscious was pointing out an uncomfortable truth that your conscious mind is working hard to repress, just as the ghost of his father appeared to Shakespeare’s Hamlet to tell him something that he may already have known—that his father was murdered by Hamlet’s new stepfather.

To dream of touching a ghost and having it disappear indicates that you are trying to confront and come to terms with painful memories. Demonic ghost images with no face or dark shadows (’dementors’, if you are a Harry Potter fan) may represent your negative tendencies, unpleasant parts of personality or your ’shadow’. Old superstition-based dream interpretations say that dreaming of friendly ghosts is a lucky omen, and that you should be receiving unexpected good luck. On the other hand, if you were very frightened by the ghost in your dream, then others will try to impose their will on you and you must be vigilant in order to stand up to it.... Grandparent

The appearance of grandparents in dreams can highlight your attitude towards them, as well as representing the traditions and beliefs handed down to you by them or your feelings about old age and death. It is often said that parents do not know if they have done a good job raising their children until their children have children of their own. As grandparents are often seen by children to be more sympathetic figures than parents in dreams, they may stand for wisdom, intuition or the desire for an untroubled relationship with your father and mother. Your dream grandparent may have appeared to remind you of the happy times you shared in childhood. Apart from reflecting a yearning for the security of childhood, dreaming of either of your grandparents may suggest that you are in urgent need of their guidance and experience as you face life’s dilemmas and pitfalls.

If you don’t associate the grandparent with impartial wisdom, ask yourself whether he or she may have been an archetype in disguise, especially the priest or priestess, or wise old woman or wise old man. Whichever archetype seems to fit your grandparent, their advice will help set you on the right path; the very appearance of a family elder in a dream indicates that you should look to the past for inspiration and solutions to your current problems. The key may be an ancestral trait you have inherited or an actual event in your family’s history that has parallels with your waking situation.

To dream of a grandparent who has died will usually be reassuring, telling you that you have inherited some of their wisdom. For Jungians, the grandfather may symbolize the wise old man; he can appear in various forms such as king, wizard, prophet, teacher, guru or priest. The grandmother may likewise symbolize the great mother archetype, which may appear as a goddess, wise old woman, prophet or teacher. Jung called these figures ‘mana personalities’, from the Melanesian word for ‘the divine’. These are symbols of the power and the wisdom that lies in the deepest part of the psyche, and dreams that contain mana figures represent a time of great spiritual progress and opportunity in waking life.... Nuts And Seeds

Although less juicy then fruits, nuts are equally nutritious and satisfying, sharing fruit’s general symbolism of reward, fertility and well-being. And because their edible parts are encased in hard shells, they also denote wisdom and insight that may be hidden or yet to be discovered. To dream that you are gathering nuts could suggest success in business and in love. You may also be trying to get to the core of a matter or situation. To dream that you are eating nuts signifies prosperity and attainment of your desires, but if you dreamed of exerting enormous force to crack open a nut, your unconscious may have been referring to someone in your waking life who is a tough nut, presenting a hard face to the world whilst possessing a tender interior. Alternatively, it may signify some project in your life that is proving to be a tough nut to crack. Bear in mind also that your unconscious may have been making a reference to testicles or ’nuts’, or was reflecting the current craziness of your waking life. Consider also the association with health, as in a ’health nut’, or feeling passionate or nuts about something.

Your dreaming mind may also home in on a particular nut and if it does there may be a sexual connotation. Almonds, for example, resemble female genitalia and because the almond is a symbol of the Virgin Mary, they may also denote virginity or innocence. Bear in mind, too, the phrase ’almond eyed’, which indicates a perceptive individual. Although most nuts symbolize masculine sexuality, the walnut does so more than others, suggesting fertility in particular. To see or eat filbert nuts in your dream signifies peace, harmony and profitable business ventures. Nutmeg indicates a basic natural ability or talent you may be unaware that you have. A nutcracker will exemplify a need for solutions or resolution, whilst a nutshell relates to the shells you use in waking life to protect yourself. A nutshell may also indicate a need to consolidate your beliefs into a basic, simple formula. To see a nut tree in your dream signifies happiness and rewarding experiences in waking life.

Dreams of seeds or kernels pertain to your inner talents and abilities. Other interpretations include: the beginning of something or the completion of a phase or cycle, mission accomplished, fertility and going to seed. They may also be a homonym for ’cede’, or surrendering. Sunflower seeds suggest the emergence of spiritual joy, pumpkin seeds stand for opportunities to express yourself in waking life, hemp seeds refer to a strong or powerful factor in your life and flax seeds signify a way of life that offers multiple benefits.... (1) A seed may symbolize potential for personal growth. Sowing seed means making new growth possible.

your psyche between the true self (T) and the ego (‘me’), in which, despite ‘me’s’ stubborn independence or rebelliousness, T offers love and comfort and healing. (In Hindu mythology the seed is a symbol of Atman, the ultimate T of every act. In Judaism, Christianity and Islam - God is a Thou’. Everything from the knowledge we import (“plant a seed in their memory”) to the money we use to finance business ventures (seed money) germinates metaphorically from a “seed.” A seed may indicate an idea has been planted in the dreamer’s mind and is germinating into new life experiences.... Seeds

Plantingseeds in a dream represent the element ofprogeny and procreation. Scattered seeds on the ground in a dream mean bearing a child for each seed. As for the grains that are germinated for medicinal purpose, when seen in a dream, they mean acquiring knowledge that helps the person in question to increase his or herpiety and ascetic detachment from worldly matters. Pumpkin, cucumber, eggplant, sweet basil, chard, onion, cabbage, Indian corn and melon seeds in a dream mean abating or ceasing of difficulties and disturbances, or they could mean recovering from a terminal illness.

If one sees himself trying to plant something which is not a plant, or to place a seed in an unsuitable ground in a dream, it means that he is wasting his money and squandering his property.

To plant seeds in a dream also could mean knowledge, wealth or recognizing a noble trade. Sprouted seeds in a dream represent honor and status. However planting seeds in a dream also represent mixing with evil people.

Seeds

This is one of the most potent symbols that represent potential and possibility. From something very small and unremarkable, spectacular expressions of life force can emerge. In and of themselves, seeds are unimpressive. But place them in the right environment and a miracle occurs. One of the most significant things about seeds is their specificity. Each type of seed will transform into one expression only.

If you plant a radish seed, you cannot expect a carrot to grow. Every seed has a consciousness about this; as long as it finds itself in the proper conditions, it knows what it is and knows what to do.

The essence of the universal meaning of a seed is in its potential, but the less obvious meaning connects to the independence of its development. You could hardly expect your garden to grow if every day you dug up the seeds you had planted to see how they were coming along. Seeds must be left alone to do what is innately inside of them to do. In this way, patience for the possibilities to come is also indicated by this symbol.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Spirits And Ghosts

Even the most prosaic and materialistic of us have dreams that include supernatural creatures or incidents.

Ghosts, witches, out-of-body experiences, UFOs, haunted houses and a whole plethora of spirits, creatures and unexplained phenomena exist in the world of the supernatural. When these images appear in your dreams, they can be unsettling, especially when psychics claim that they are connected with the supernatural. Even though there is no evidence to suggest this is the case, the mysterious and often bizarre nature of dreams has led many to interpret dreams as supernatural gifts or messages, as predictions of the future or as messages from the past. Modern oneiromancy, the prediction of the future through the interpretation of dreams, is a tradition that has its roots in pagan and ancient Greek and Roman thought, as well as in the Jewish and Christian religions.

Freudians and Jungians, together with most other dream analysts, reject the supernatural origin of dreams. Their view is that dreams bubble up from the unconscious mind and are metaphors for events or emotions occurring in our waking lives. Theologians, however, continue to admit the possibility that dreams may be supernatural or divine in origin. Whether or not you believe dreams have a supernatural origin, if you are experiencing such dreams, your unconscious might be urging you to be more open-minded towards unexplained phenomena; alternatively, they might be suggesting a need for radical change in your life or attitude.
