Adler, Alfred (1870-1937)

Born in Vienna, Austria. Studied medicine, later became a disciple of Freud. Diverged from Freud over the sexual impulse being all important in human behaviour. Adler saw people as goal oriented, with an urge toward personal growth and wholeness. He stated that in dreams we can clearly see our aggressive impulses and desire for fulfilment. Dreams can also help the dreamer define two often conflicting aspects of their experience—their image or sense of themselves, and their sense of what is socially acceptable. Because we strive from our earliest years to have some control over ourself and surroundings, we may develop a style of life around a sense of inferiority or lack of power. So a person who feels vulnerable may become aggressive to compensate. Adler therefore felt that in our dreams we not only see what we think of ourself, and what our environmental situation is, but also find a definition of our techniques for satisfying our drive to deal with and succeed in the world.... Alfred Adler

Alfred Adler (1870–1937) was an Austrian psychiatrist who developed a personality theory referred to as individual psychology. He was at one time closely associated with Sigmund Freud, but broke with Freud to develop his own form of psychotherapy. Adler placed much less emphasis on dreams than other schools of psychiatry, and his attitude toward dreams is somewhat inconsistent. Even though he did not develop a full-blown theory of dreams, his thoughts on this subject had a significant influence on later dream theorizing.

To oversimplify the difference between Freud and Adler, Freud focused on sex and aggression and Adler focused on power and status. Adler viewed much human motivation as originating during the lengthy period of child- hood, when we are relatively powerless to control our lives. In response to this feeling of helpless- ness, the human being, according to Adler, develops a powerful urge to master his or her world. This desire for control and mastery becomes the central drive in human life.

Dreams would clearly have a different significance for Adler than they had for Freud. In Freudian theory, dreams are fundamentally arenas within which inner tensions, many of them safely hidden from view in the unconscious, could be safely discharged. Often these tensions have roots in infantile conflicts, making dreams pasoriented. For Adler, on the other hand, dreams become part of the larger project of the individual to master his or her life. In particular, dreams come about as a result of an effort—whether that effort is effective or not—to anticipate future situations, so as to allow us to imaginatively prepare for them. Although dreams are intended to help the dreamer acquire more control over his or her world, Adler recognized that many dreams are maladaptive, in the sense that, if one were to actu- ally follow their guidance, the practical results would be to detract from, rather than enhance, the goal of mastery over one’s environment.

Adler’s views provide a radically different perspective on dreams from Freud’s. For Freud dreams serve to discharge inner tensions originat- ing in the past and hidden in the unconscious, whereas for Adler the function of dreams is to anticipate the future. Also, one of the results of Adler’s portrayal of dreams is to make them more related to the thoughts and motivations of waking consciousness, in marked contrast to Freud’s portrayal, which emphasizes the disjunction between the waking and the dreaming state. Adler’s ideas, particularly as developed and for- mulated by later theorists, have influenced many contemporary therapists.... Dreampedia

Appearance Of Tree

If you dreamed of a well-shaped tree that is pleasing to the eye, this would suggest a personality that is ordered; a large, messy tree would suggest a chaotic personality. The seasonal appearance of the tree in your dream will be significant because the stages of a person’s life are reflected in the effects of the seasons on a deciduous tree.

If your dream tree was covered in spring blossoms and tiny leaf buds, the association is with spring, and the vigor and energy of youth.

If the tree was covered in deep green foliage, this suggests summer or the prime of life; if its leaves were starting to fall, this suggests autumn and middle age; and if the tree looked bare, this suggests winter and old age, or concerns about getting older.

According to Freudians, acorns are a phallic symbol and nuts symbols of the female genitals, so seeds and nuts on the tree can suggest new beginnings. Seedlings and saplings are generally associated with young children, flourishing and mature trees suggest maturity and ancient trees, old age. A dead or withered tree could be a symbol of a lost loved one; it not only reminds us that all living things die, but also that the cycle of rebirth and new beginnings never ends.

If your dreaming mind featured a tree with a crown or apex (or you dreamed of climbing a tree and struggling to reach the top), this suggests a desire for spiritual growth. Alternatively, it could suggest ambition in your professional life or the desire for safety or refuge, as when you climb a tree to escape.

If you dreamed of a falling tree, this represents a sense of threat to your identity.

Tall trees are a symbol of aspiration and reaching up to the sky, whilst a short tree is a symbol of low aspirations or selling yourself short. A tree that is fallen or cut down may symbolize obstacles in your path, and a tree struck by lightning or in flames may represent a situation that is about to erupt. It can also symbolize electrified energy or being ’on fire’ for a goal or desire. See also Forest entry in PLACES.... The Element Encyclopedia

Apple. Apple Tree

Symbol: The apple—as far back as antiquity—is a symbol of fertility. #

Vision: Looking at many apples in a tree: you have many friends. Eating a red apple: love will enter your life soon.

If single, you will meet a new partner; if married, you will experience a renewal of your love life.

If the apple has worms: frustration or separation.

If it is full of worms: problems in your love relationship.

If the apple is rotten: trouble is on the horizon. Biting into a sour apple: for better or worse, you must deal with an unpleasant situation.

A golden apple: you are gaining self-knowledge. Giving a woman an apple: you will find a new female friend. Looking at an apple tree in bloom: business success. Looking at an apple tree just before harvest: chances for profit are good.

Depth Psychology: The apple, the biblical symbol of original sin, is always a symbol for love.

The state of the apple indicates the state of the dreamer’s love life. Since the apple always stands for sensual/worldly temptations, you might be thinking of giving in to them. See Fruit.... Dreamers Dictionary

Diseased, Dismembered, Injured And Deformed Body

If the body is diseased in a dream, this suggests a sickness of attitude or it could simply indicate extreme emotional and physical fatigue. A dismembered body indicates emotional and mental distress; perhaps you are tearing yourself apart over something or someone, or your life is falling apart. Half a body dream images suggest a lack of balance in your life between your outer and inner life.

If the top half of your body is missing, this indicates lack of reasoning and emotional intelligence.

If the bottom half is missing, this relates to loss, or denial of instincts and sexuality.

If the body is injured or you see injuries, this suggests emotional scars or hurts, or repressed anger.

If the body is cut open, this indicates a vital change within yourself or the release of emotional tension.

In times past, such dreams were interpreted as the release of ‘evil spirits’, hence the association of a sometimes painful release of tension.

Loss of limbs in a body usually indicates a sense of inadequacy, sometimes connected with the limb that is lost. For example, loss of legs could suggest an inability to stand up for yourself or someone dependent on you. Loss of an arm could indicate an inability to influence other people, or to give and receive.

If your body is burnt in the dream, this suggests an emotional scar, and if the burn is painful, this suggests that you are relating to this hurt in an unhelpful, self-destructive way. If, however, the burning isn’t painful, it has a more positive interpretation: feelings of potential and new beginnings.

Marks on the body in a dream suggest things you carry with you in life, or experiences that have marked you.

If your body is crawling with maggots, this indicates the need to cleanse your body of toxins, infection or resentment. A murdered body in a dream represents aspects of your life that you find hard to deal with, such as anger towards a family member. Sometimes such anger may be a way of avoiding the real issues involved and, if this is the case, the dream murder may show how you feel about being ‘murdered’ by lack of love or trust.

If you are pulling things out of your body in your dream, this suggests growing self-knowledge; you are becoming aware of thoughts and emotions of which you were previously unaware. See also SICKNESS AND HEALTH.... The Element Encyclopedia

Flowering Tree

People have worshipped trees for centuries and profound symbolism is associated with them. The dream image of a mature flowering tree can evoke the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life at the heart of Eden or the cross on which Jesus was sacrificed, which is also called a tree and is a symbol of redemption. These Judeo-Christian images have their counterparts in other cultures and myths, with divine trees that sustain knowledge, spiritual growth and divinity, perhaps the best known being the mighty ash Yggdrasil of the Norsemen. And in Islamic belief a tree symbolizes a spiritually mature person. A tree can also represent time; the root, the past; the trunk, the present and the branches, the future. Perhaps your dream says something about your hopes for the future.

According to ancient dream-lore, climbing a tree is said to be lucky.

If you dream of a fruit-bearing tree, take a look at which type of fruit is present and its meaning for you.

If you noticed the species of tree, what is that species associated with for you? Did you dream of the mighty, strong oak, dainty cherry tree or somber, dark conifers? Did you dream of a single tree or a forest? If you find yourself lost in a forest, perhaps you ’can’t see the forest for the trees’ or have lost sight of your goals. Walking through a forest may symbolize a need to get back in touch with your inner self and your instinctual nature.... The Element Encyclopedia

It Was Discovered That Our Brain Was Washed From Head To Toe While Sleeping

Scientists have found that the human brain is washed during sleep through a study on 13 subjects. According to the research, blood flows out of the brain during sleep, while the cerebrospinal fluid washes the brain. A team led by Laura Lewis, who is working at Boston University, made an interesting scientific discovery. The team, which has been working on the human brain for a while, has discovered that when people sleep, their brains are washed with cerebrospinal fluid. So your brain is completely washed through rhythmic and breakthrough waves while you sleep. According to previous studies, Lewis says that they already know that neurons in the brain have electrical wave activities, but that they have discovered that there are also waves in the cerebrospinal fluid. Scientists have illustrated the phases of the brain during sleep so that the research can be done, and the images we will share with you shortly reveal how this washing process will be. According to the data obtained in the research, after the people sleep, the brain neurons do not function, and the blood flows out of the brain. It is precisely at this time that the cerebrospinal fluid comes into play and washes the brain from beginning to end. Laura Lewis states that the findings from the research are very important because she hopes that these findings may lead to new discoveries. Lewis’ hopes are about psychological and neurological discoveries. Because brain waves can combine with blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid, especially for the investigation of age-related normal impairments. The reason for this is that as people age, their brains produce less and slower waves. So this research could both open a new door and be a glimmer of hope, especially for the treatment of alzheimer’s disease. Lewis made this important discovery with 13 people aged between 23 and 33. Considering getting help from the subjects at older ages in the ongoing processes of his research, Lewis states that they can understand how the movement in the brains of people who are older is going to be. Lewis says that so they can make a new discovery about alzheimer’s.... Dreampedia

Mud / Sand / Soil

What is the quality of the earth in your dream? Is it richly fertile or a wasteland? Sandy soil suggests uncertainty; red earth, hard work and toil, and rich, dark soil, satisfaction. Soft soil links with the need for mothering or tactile contact.

Parched or barren ground is, however, a sign of inner conflict or exhaustion, suggesting that you should search your dreamscape for signs of hope. Sand in a dream suggests instability and lack of security, especially if you see it together with the sea.

If the sands are shifting, you may feel uncertain about what you want from life.

If you see sand in an hourglass, you are conscious of time running out.

If you are building sandcastles in your dream, this suggests that the structure of your life lacks permanence.

Mud symbolizes creation in many religions, specifically the creation of mankind. In the Bible, God molded Adam from a lump of clay and breathed life into him, and it is traditionally to clay and dust that human beings return. Ancient dream interpretation suggested that to dream of mud foretold finding great riches, while a dream in which you sank in mud would lead to a rapid recovery from illness. From a psychological viewpoint, mud represents the fundamental substance of life, which handled properly has potential for growth, but handled badly can drag you down. Mud in dreams can also represent past experiences—or your perception of them—as something that is holding you back, or in which you are stuck. Clear as mud paradoxically means that something is not clear at all. Are you unclear about a situation in which you are involved? See also CRYSTALS, GEMSTONES AND ROCKS; TREES.... Mulberry Tree

(Sycamore, bibl.) In a dream, a mulberry tree represents a person in a high position who has many children, who is big in size but ill mannered, who benefits no one, though he remains well respected.

If one gets some of its fruits in his dream, it means that he will receive something from such a person. Ifhe is hurt by its thorns in the dream, the same will take place in wakefulness. When maple trees, tamarisk trees and shrubs are mixed together in a dream, they mean victory and glad tidings for one who is contemplating a war or gearing for a fight. However, for the rest of people, these trees in a dream mean poverty and meekness.... Islamic Dream Interpretation

Murder, Murderer, Being Murdered. Hanging, Stabbing, Suffocating. Drowning

Vision: Dreaming about being murdered: difficulties in the near future. Murdering someone else: watch out and don’t be careless, you could be the one who gets hurt. See Aggression.

If you are hanging yourself: it is a message from your unconscious that your personality is unfolding and still “up in the air,” but this stage will soon be completed. See Hanging.

A stabbing refers to an immature, aggressive sexuality (See Dagger) and the desire for a quick resolution to conflicts or problems. Suffocating refers to situations you have not yet accepted. See .Asthma. Drowning either serves as a warning or indicates that you are about to drown under the weight of present events, responsibilities, and dangers. See Execution, Gallows, Murder. Being an eyewitness to a murder: the disagreements that people around you have are none of your business—leave them alone. Murder-dreams imply that you will live to a ripe old age. Dreaming about being murdered: are you refusing to accept the harsh reality—that a phase in your life is coming to an end? If you are participating in a murder: you are shamelessly exploiting someone’s bad luck for your own ends.

Depth Psychology: While you feel you should be ashamed of what you have done, you have pushed your guilt feelings underground and now are facing the consequences. Sometimes the dream also means that you want (or need to) end a phase in your life.

The murderer represents hidden fears coming to the fore, which weaken or threaten to destroy your personal growth. Do something about it and do it quickly. Dreaming about murdering someone: you are struggling with problems and would like nothing better than to get rid of someone (unconscious aggression). Clear the air as soon as possible! Dreams about murder mean that an insight or opportunity for advancement has been “murdered.” Usually you yourself are the murderer and are being murdered. Orphaned / Adopted / Fostered

If you dream of being an orphaned, adopted or fostered child, this usually suggests that your relationships with members of your family in waking life have created some sense of loss and rejection in you. Dreaming of having lost your parents or being rejected by your parents so you become an orphan, adopted or fostered child may denote that you feel you didn’t get their unconditional love and attention, and that you have to find your own way in the world without their support. Alternatively you may feel as if you are an outsider in the relationship to your family. Perhaps you have been excluded or perhaps you have little in common with them. Do you consider yourself rejected or at odds with the rest of your family? Whatever the reason, your dream may be suggesting to you that you need to create a surrogate family to get the support you need; this may be with your friends or your partner, and they will be able to help you feel loved, secure and accepted for who you are.

Another explanation of such dreams is that it is time for you to be more independent and self-reliant by moving away from your parents. When life forces you into permanently or temporarily losing your parents, either by death or by other circumstances such as foreign travel, you may experience dreams of being orphaned. The dream might not refer to your relationship with your family at all, but might be telling you that you are feeling abandoned, unloved, rejected and misunderstood by your partner, friends or colleagues in waking life.

If this is the case, the dream connects to feelings of belonging or not belonging in waking life.

If you are looking after an orphan in your dream, you are attempting to heal that part of you that feels unloved.... The Element Encyclopedia

If red flashes through our dreams, our soul is ready for action; it indicates either admiration or suffering.

Red

In waking life red is associated with fire, heat, blood and passion. In dreams, these ‘hot’ themes are often mirrored and the interpretation is typically connected with passion, energy or vitality. Red is also associated with anger and rage towards something or someone, and, through its association with fire, can represent danger and prohibition. This is reflected in the red ‘stop’ signs of many countries’ traffic-control systems. The color also indicates the angry urge to fight back and, if you are experiencing such violent emotions and you dream of red, take it as a warning to exercise restraint, or the consequences will be tragic.

Revenge or retaliation is not advisable.

If red features in your dream, perhaps you should consider the tone that was being used. Lighter shades of red can be representative of excitement (especially sexual), passion, energy, and life. However, deeper or ‘weighed- down’ shades of red may be indicative of the overheated emotions of lust and anger, and the impulsive desire for revenge. Notice again how the ‘stop’ sign is red; red can thus be seen as a hint from your subconscious to stop acting in a particular way.

Because red is the color of blood, it may also denote physical strength, vital energy and the life force which, depending on the context of the dream, may be ebbing away or throbbing with life. A red heart may stand for deep-seated sexual energy or desire in waking life, red ears may suggest embarrassment or guilt, whilst a red nose is often thought to indicate an inquisitive nature. Red flames are believed to indicate the threat of danger, red wine is often linked to feelings of satisfaction and contentment, and a red rose is typically tied to the idea of romance and passion. Who was holding the red rose in your dream?

Other considerations to take into account include whether the red in your dream suggests being ‘in the red’ (in debt), or brings to mind a person who holds socialists beliefs (a red). It can also refer to a scarlet (sexually permissive) woman, or to waving the proverbial red flag at something, or someone, who provoked you. Keywords: danger, shame, sexual impulses, passion and urges.

Perhaps you need to stop and think about your actions.... The Element Encyclopedia

Dreams in which you are fired from your job, dismissed by your employer or refused work may reflect insecurities about the regard in which you are held by the people with whom you work. On the other hand, your dream may reflect your sense of redundancy in another area of your life. Perhaps your children have grown up and you don’t feel needed as a parent anymore.

If your position at work is uncertain in your waking life, your dreaming mind may also be preparing you for the inevitable and highlighting the importance of being prepared.

Sand

In a dream, sand represents money. Carrying a handful of sand in a dream means pursuing a business.

If one carries a heavy load of sand in a dream, it means that he will suffer for his sins. Swallowing sand or gathering it in a dream denotes savings. Walking on sand in a dream means pursuing either a spiritual or a mundane interest, or it could represent a sad event, a fight, or committing injustice toward one’s own soul or against others. Depending on the quantity seen in one’s dream, gathering sand may mean shackles, a siege, life or death, poverty or richness, and honor or humiliation. Sand in a dream also means toiling or difficulties.

If a woman sees herself walking on sand in a dream, it means the death of her husband. Ifa man sees such a dream, it means the death of his wife. Red sand in a dream represents a high ranking position. White sand in a dream means profits for fortunetellers. Yellow sand in a dream means repentance, recovering from an illness, or tightening of one’s livelihood.

A pile of sand collected at the feet of a tree in a dream represents a construction project, or urban expansion.

Sand

This image represents the transitory—as in the hourglass—and the fear of getting stuck and sinking into the sand.

The saying “throw sand in people’s eyes” means deception. However, the sandman also throws sand in people’s eyes so that they can get a restful night’s sleep. In addition, sand also points to the element of earth (in a more delicate form), and in that sense again points to the dreamer being grounded.

In the form of sand on the beach, this image points to vacation and relaxation and, in addition, the gentle waves of emotions that over time smooth out that which is rough and tough (stone).

If this dream takes place in a sandbox, your unconscious wants to give you a plan that you can use in your everyday life.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

Sand

Sand is part of the land and as such relates to the conscious mind.

The tiny particles that make up sand have an implication of the many thoughts that occupy the mind at any given time. Since sand is so unable to structurally support anything because of its inherent lack of solidity, the symbolic meaning of it relates to the danger of any shifting foundation. How solid is the ground on which you are currently building the structures of your life? Sand is a staple of the beach, where the symbolic consciousness of land meets the symbolic unconsciousness of the ocean. This is the very malleable structure of this ever- changing landscape, and your dream of sand may relate to this.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Shared Dream

Sometimes people discover—usually accidentally—that they have experienced a virtually identical dream, perhaps at the same time. In this variety of psychic dream, two or more people seem to experience the same events and have similar images. As an example, two people might both report having dreamt of mending the same component on a car, having the same conversation or visiting the same place. Shared dreams may be much more common than we imagine, because the discussion of dreams is usually fairly limited because of the fast pace of modern life. The theoretical implications are fascinating. Are they caused by the dreams using a common symbol representing a similar thought concerning something that happened in the day? Is there telepathic communication between the dreamers? Or can a part of your consciousness actually enter someone else’s mind? These questions need to be explored. Such anomalies often act as clues that lead to great new truths.... The Element Encyclopedia

If your dream tree reminded you of nothing in particular, it may be that you are unconsciously aware of its traditional, mythical or religious symbolism and this may have relevance to your waking situation. Specific trees carry with them ancient associations and although it is unlikely that these association have much relevance in modern urban life, they can and do still carry weight in your dreams.

To see a street in your dream, symbolizes your life’s path.

The condition of the street reflects how much control you have over the direction of your life.

(If it’s rocky and uphill, you’re feeling a lack of control in your life; if the street is well-paved and easy to progress on, you are in control of your own destiny). Try to remember if there was a name on the street - analyzing the street name can offer some important significance or hints to the meaning of the dream.

To dream of alleys or side streets, suggests that you need to be less rebellious or adventurous for now, and return to more traditional ways. It may also suggest that you have been exploring (or want to explore) an alternative way of life. Curving or crooked streets foretell surprises and travel.

The Tree Of Life

Spiritually and in dreams, the tree is a symbol of the Tree of Life; an ancient idea common to many cultures and mythologies. Often regarded as an all-nourishing, all-giving Mother, many myths speak of the Tree of Life or World Tree as involved in the creation of the universe.

Britain was once covered by mighty oak, lime and pine forests, and reverence for trees is a major feature within Celtic religion, reflecting a link between the upper and lower worlds. Druids had their teaching center in the midst of oak groves, and the words for wood and wisdom are similar (Welsh gwydd and gwyddon). The Celtic Tree of Life is one of the most popular and enduring motifs of Celtic art, found both on Northumbrian and Celtic crosses and on illuminated manuscripts. It is also portrayed variously as the Golden Bough, vine, or mistletoe. The ancient Celts envisioned the cosmos in the form of a great tree, whose roots were deep in the earth and whose branches stretched to the heavens.

The Celtic Tree of Life is therefore a symbol of balance between these worlds; the unification of above and below; a symbol of balance and harmony. Its branches and roots form a map of the cosmos wherein all things are interwoven and connected; it dwells in three worlds—a link between heaven, earth and the underworld. In dreams the appearance of the Tree of Life or any kind of tree can therefore be a powerful symbol of harmony, success, integration and fulfillment.

These can be achieved in waking life when there is a union between the material and the spiritual, and the feminine and masculine aspects of your personality.... The Element Encyclopedia

Tree

The tree represents, in the broadest sense, the life of the cosmos: its density, growth, proliferation, etc. In oneiric terms, it is the embodiment of the subject’s personality. Thus, the type of tree and its condition will indicate the state of mind and spirituality.

If any of its parts have been damaged, some dimensions of the subject will have suffered as well. In this sense, the branches represent your superior functions; the trunk, your social role; and the roots, the foundations of your personality and your unconscious. A leafy and strong tree therefore symbolizes self confidence and creativity, as well as material and spiritual protection. But if the tree is weak and without leaves, you are not on track and you lack sufficient experience to undertake your life’s purpose. On the other hand, if you dream of planting a tree or if it is in bloom means a sign of fertility or inner maturity.

According to tradition, the tree symbolizes time: roots represent the past while branches the future. Perhaps the dream portends a premonition or your future hopes and fears. In the event you dream that you climb a tree, you will be lucky.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Trees

The tree depicts the living structure of our inner self. Its roots show our connection with our physical body and the earth, its trunk the way we direct the energies of our being— growth, sex, thought, emotion.

The branches are the abilities, directions and many facets we develop in life—varied and yet all connected in the common life process of our being.

The tree can also symbolise new growth, stages of life and death, with its spring leaves and blossom, then the falling leaves.

The top of the tree, or the ends of the branches, are our aspirations, the growing vulnerable tip of our personal growth and spiritual realisation.

The leaves may represent our personal life which may fall off the tree of life (die) but what gave it life continues to exist.

The tree is our whole life, the evolutionary urge which pushes us into being and growth. It depicts the force or process which is behind all other life forms —but seen as it expresses in our personal existence.

In some old manuscripts pictures show a man lying on the ground and his penis growing into a tree, with fruits, birds, and perhaps people in its protective shade. This illustrates how one’s personal life energy can branch out from its source in the basic drives, and become creativity, fruitfulness, some- thing given to others.

The tree can also represent the spine, and the different levels of human experience—physical, sensual, sexual, hungers, emotions, relatedness, communication, thought, awareness.

Example: ‘I was about eight years old when I had this dream. In it I was sitting in a large garden. I believe there was a big house nearby which was our family house—not our real house. With me were other members of my family, and there was a baby boy too. Nearby was a laige tree. We climbed this tree, the baby as well, to see what was at the top.

The baby fell out of the tree. We climbed down and took the baby to a room and lay it on a bed. It seemed to be asleep and didn’t wake up. Later we went back to the room to see the baby but it had gone. In its place was a bluebird. As we looked the bluebird flew away’ (told to author on LBC radio programme).

The tree in this dream depicts the child’s sense of her life as it might develop or grow in the future. Climbing it shows her exploring what it might be like to grow up. At about eight most children unconsciously develop a philosophy which enables them to meet the difficulties of meeting the growth of self awareness, which includes the knowledge of death at the end of life.

The dreamer looks at this by having the baby fall out of the tree. Death is seen as the bluebird which flies away.

Example: ‘I flew low over small trees which were just coming into leaf. They had beautiful soft green leaves. I knew it was autumn and the leaves were only just coming out because it had been a cloudy, overcast summer. I felt the leaves would have time to mature because the sun would be out in the autumn, and the trees would not die’ (Colin C). Colin dreamt this in his early 50s, at a time when he felt frustrated by not being able to achieve a regular source of income or, more important, feel satisfied with what he had achieved in life.

The flying shows him taking an overview of his situation.

The poor summer is his feelings that the years of his life which should have been most productive had been poor—literally, the sun had not shone on his endeavours. But he feels encouraged because he senses that his personal ‘summer’ is still to come, and his many endeavours—the trees—would not prove unproductive.

A wood, collection of trees: the natural forces in one’s own being, therefore one’s connection with or awareness of the unconscious, other people’s personal growth and connection with self. Dead tree: past way of life; something which was full of life for you in the past, but is now dead; dead relative. Falling tree: sense of threat to one’s identity, loss of relative. Christmas tree, other evergreen: the eternal aspect of our transitory experience. Human, animal hung on tree: personal sacrifice; the death of some part of self so further growth can occur—death of dependence so independence can arise; the pains and struggles, the sense of crucifixion occurring in the maturing process. Oak: strength, masculinity. Flowering tree: fertility, femininity. Idioms: top of the tree; family tree; bark up the wrong tree. See death and rebirth and the self under archetypes; second example in wife under family; fifth example in flying. See also individuation. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

As with a lovely garden, beautiful trees are a favorable omen in a dream, and planting trees is especially auspicious for love affairs and/or matters of friendship.

Cutting down trees portends difficulties of your own making, and climbing a tree is one of the few exceptions to the “up is good” rule, as it indicates hard work for small gain.

Blossoming trees predict unexpected joy, and a row or line of trees indicates extended advancement Aspen signifies a season of loneliness; Crabapple a new experience; an Oak is a sign of faithful love; a Spruce promises good health.

To dream of tree stumps signifies changes and new beginnings.

The Complete Guide to Interpreting Your Dreams

Trees

Linking the earth with the heavens, the tree is an archetypal symbol that can represent cosmic unity; in dreams, however, it generally refers to your spiritual and emotional growth.

The tree’s roots draw on the depths of the unconscious, the trunk is the solid body and the branches reach to the enlightenment of heaven. According to Jung the tree is ’a symbol of the self…depicted in the process of growth’.

If this interpretation is used, dreams about trees can be seen to be symbolic of the basic structure of your inner life, telling you a great deal about yourself and your personal growth. Because each element of the tree’s structure also denotes aspects of you, your life, your past, your present and even your future, when one appears in your dreams it is best to work with the image fairly extensively. The shape of the tree and the condition of its roots, trunk, branches, leaves and fruit all send important messages, as does the landscape in which the tree is growing. And if you dreamed of a particular species of tree, understanding its symbolic associations will further aid your interpretation and your self-knowledge. Unpreparedness

In Western cultures, this motif often emerges in dreams in which we find ourselves taking an examination for which we are completely unprepared. For example, college students often have anxiety dreams around the end of the term that involve examinations they have not studied adequately for; this occurs regardless of whether or not the student has actually studied enough.

The unpreparedness motif can also emerge in other ways, such as when we dream about standing before a crowd on a stage or at a public forum, then realize that we have forgotten what we were going to say, or discovering we were never prepared to say anything in the first place.

A dream about being unprepared to take a test or give a speech might reflect anxieties about anything from how we will do on an upcoming job interview to whether we will succeed in a new marriage.

The core anxiety concerns doubts about our adequacy.... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia

Withered Or Dead Flowers

To see withered or dead flowers in your dream denotes disappointments and gloomy situations. You may not be utilizing your full potential and talents.

If you receive wilted blooms in dreamland as a gift from someone you know, think about the nature of your relationship with that person; your unconscious might have detected that the relationship is weakening. Similarly, if you are pricked by a hidden thorn in a bunch of roses given by colleague who was congratulating you in a dream scenario, is it possible that they are concealing real feelings of resentment towards you in waking life? If you gave a bunch of dead flowers to a difficult or strict former schoolteacher, could this highlight your extreme dislike of that person? To see flowers blooming in barren soil, however, signifies that your energy and cheerful nature will enable you to overcome your grievances.... The Element Encyclopedia
