Ancient Building

The pyramid is said to be a focus of spiritual energy, so it if appears in your dream, your unconscious is drawing your attention to the power within. Dreams about old or ancient buildings refer to the past and experiences that have been lived through, such as a former life with another person. Ruins suggest a now irrelevant way of life or approach to life. The ruins may belong to a castle, and this suggests that the defenses you once built up are no longer necessary.

Mansions and palaces in dreams have a similar interpretation as houses, but with the emphasis on those possibilities within us that have yet to be developed and explored. There is a sense of something special or wonderful happening within yourself, as palaces are places of enchantment and treasure in fairy tales. However, palaces may also represent a warning against adopting a pretentious façade and living beyond your means.... The Element Encyclopedia

Boat / Ship

To dream of a sailboat is to be complacent However, if it is in stormy seas, then you are going to find yourself extremely busy.

A sailboat is also a means of transport and, as such, should be considered as another form of symbolizing spiritual progression. It would be of a lighter, almost dilettante form.

A steamship, another method of transportation, would be a slow but steady form.

A lifeboat is not transportation per se. so it may symbolize a need to escape; trying to get out of a difficult situation. See also individual boat types... Gypsy Dream Dictionary

Boat, Ship

Our journey through the seas of life and how we meet the rough and smooth experiences, as with following example.

The dream occurred a few weeks before a breakdown centering on the dreamer’s wife leaving him. ‘I am in a large glass boat with my wife.

The sea is very rough and I am afraid the boat will sink’ (Ron D).

Many boat/ship dreams depict something else: a situation we are involved in with other people which is difficult to get out of, such as marriage, business partnership, armed forces. Keel: basic personal strengths. Bows: one’s strength to meet life’s changes. Rudder: sureness about direction in life.

The ship sinking : fear of relationship ending—could be children leaving mother, so the collective ‘boat journey’ has finished; illness; death. Leaving boat but leaving bag on it: lack of identity, alone—perhaps when children have gone or job ended. Lots of small boats: other people’s relationships. Small boat with one other person: one’s relationship with that person. Going on a cruise: desiring relationship with others, or to be a pan of other people’s lives. Boat journey by night: classic archetype of searching for one’s roots in life; the journey into the unconscious. Anchored boat: security; stable relationship; opposite of drifting. Motorboat: similar to car, but more sense of isolation or aloneness. Ferryboat: if across a river, death, end of a relationship; transition from one phase of life to another. Disembarking: leaving a phase of life, such as motherhood or marriage. Embarking alone: independence or loneliness. Idioms: burn one’s boats; in the same boat; miss the boat; rock the boat; ships that pass in the night; ship comes in; a tight ship. See submarine. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Breathing Under Water

In this nightmare with a happy ending, a child may dream that they are drowning and unable to reach the surface to breathe. Then, incredibly, just as they realize they are going to drown, they continue breathing and can breathe underwater in their dream. Like the dreams of flying, this dream is also about discovering abilities during times of crisis or when thrown into a particular situation. The water theme suggests a sense of being overwhelmed and vulnerable to the situations that surround us. It shows that a sense of panic is not only natural but necessary to discover the ability to breathe (survive) in a new environment (underwater).

This kind of dream tends to be outgrown by the time one reaches the age to leave home, but it can and does re-emerge if you are thrown into difficult, new or challenging situations in adult life. It should be seen as a reminder of your ability to survive tough circumstances, even when you feel out of your depth.

The dream can also arise among adults who find themselves not only in a difficult new situation, but in a situation that does not allow them to express their own concerns.... The Element Encyclopedia

Building

The element of a good building in a dream represents love, affection, unity, progeny, prosperity, a garment of honor, and girls in one’s family.

A strong edifice means strength and firmness. It also means support, help and a long life. Raising a new edifice in a dream represents either personal or collective material benefits in this world. Ifone sees himselfbuilding an edifice in a dream, it means having intercourse with his spouse. Ifone builds a church, it defines him as Christian.

If he builds a mosque, it defines him as Muslim.

If a man of knowledge sees himselfbuilding a mosque as an offering to please God Almighty in a dream, it means that he will compile a study from which others will benefit or that people will seek his advice in religious matters or interpretations.

If a king, or a ruler sees himselfbuilding a mosque as an offering for God’s pleasure in a dream, it means that he will rule his subjects with justice, command what is lawful and forbid what is unlawful.

If he builds a school, it shows him to be a man of knowledge.

If he builds a hospice in a dream, it means that he is an ascetic.

If a sick person sees himself building a house in a dream, it means that he will recover from his illness and enjoy good health. Seeing buildings in a dream explains one’s determination, it also means one’s wants for himselfwhen he rejoices at finding something suitable for status. Ifone sees his house bigger than it is in reality in a dream, it means expansion in one’s material resources.

If it grows beyond the normal norms in a dream, it means anxiety, or a delegation that hastens to enter that house without permission, announcing a calamity, or it could mean that a wedding will take place in that house. Buildinga house in a dream also means extendingone’s connections, strengthening one’s relationship with his kin, friends, or if the person in question is a general in the army, or a leader, then it means building a strong army. Building a house in a dream also means regaining power, rejoicing or success in one’s business, all of which are relative to the thickness of its walls. On the other hand, demolishing one’s house in a dream means disagreement, disintegration or separation of one’s family, relatives, friends, associates or dissolution of one’s army.

If one sees himself working for some people to renovate an old building in a dream, it means correcting the norms of conduct in that community or reviving old traditions.

For example if one sees himselfreconstructing the house of Pharaoh in a dream, it means that he is reviving or reestablishing Pharaoh’s system of government, or adopting its principals. Erecting a foundation for a building, then completing its structure in a dream means seeking knowledge, wisdom or leadership. Building a house in a different county, town or locality in a dream means a marriage with a woman from that neighborhood. Building an edifice from ceramic in a dream means decorating oneself.

If the building is from clay in the dream, it means lawful earnings.

If one engraves pictures or forms thereon in the dream, it means acquiringknowledge, learning a new craft, a leading position in the government which involves partying, alcohol and mingling with what is unlawful. Building an edifice from plaster or backed bricks encrusted with pictures or forms in a dream means engaging in an unlawful or a deceitful act. Building a house in a dream and strengthening its walls, means to complete the father’s traditions, and to continue working in his trade.

Dreams of a building symbolize your body and/or your life.

If you are in the lower levels, then this represents your exploration of the foundational, primal, sexual and instinctual aspects of yourself.

If you are on the top of the building, then you are connected to your higher awareness, solutions, and spiritual realizations.

If you are half way up, then you are either feeling stuck in the middle or you are finding a balance between higher consciousness and mundane reality. Because the building represents your body or your life, the condition of the building is very telling.

If it is in ruins, then this shows you have a lot of work to do to get your life up to code.

Building

In contemporary society, we live much of our lives in one sort of building or another. Thus, buildings in a dream may simply be stages for other kinds of dream scenarios (i.e., they do not necessarily have a symbolic meaning in and of themselves). Particular kinds of buildings may also symbolize the institution or business they house (e.g., a school building may symbolize public education). Buildings, especially houses, may also represent the self, particularly the physical body. In many-storied buildings, movement between floors sometimes symbolizes rising or falling in status or awareness.... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia

Building Up

It involves construction and progress.

If in the dream you are dedicated to building a house it means that you are rebuilding your life, so you have new projects. Buildings and houses present in dreams are symbols of the Self. The higher floors are your conscious. The lower levels, your unconscious mind.

If going down to the basement produces an unpleasant feeling or frightens you it means that there are aspects that make you frustrated. A good solution is to develop activities and new knowledge. The building’s condition also expresses how you value yourself emotionally.

If it is in ruins it indicates suffering because of your image. You need to do things that make you feel better. On the other hand, it could also refer to your physical condition. The different parts of the building, finally, can represent life’s time periods. Modern rooms are your present and conscious side. The oldest, your unconscious past. (See CONSTRUCTION)

Buildings

Buildings in dreams represent the constructions we make in our lives. They are attitudes and beliefs we have built from our experience, perception, and often from our family habits and customs. Where in real life we can learn a lot about a person from his personal environment, so in dreams a building can also reflect the dreamer’s character hopes and concerns.

The features of the building mirror the features of the dreamer’s personality. Buildings in dreams can become composite, and therefore confusing. In understanding the dream, we should interpret the main appearance of the building first, as its main function, and the secondary appearance as qualities to be recognised. Various buildings have distinct meanings:

Boarding house or Hotel - also see individual entry in

To dream of a boarding house or hotel indicates that we may not feci secure within our living conditions.

Castle, Fortress, Citadel

The symbolism of the castlc or fortress is that of the defended spacc and therefore can be taken to represent the feminine or the Great Mother.

Courtyard

In dreams, the courtyard is a place of safety and often the shape will be relevant (see Shapes).

Church, temple etc. also see Church Buildings in C and Church in Religious Imagery As an environment for us to consider our system of belief, any religious building will suggest a place of sanctuary and refuge. Although we may not consciously adhere to any particular religion, most of us have principles by which we live, which will surface in dreams in recognisable images.

House

If we are aware that the house is not empty - that there is something in it (e.g. furnishings) it shows some aspect of the dreamer. Someone else in the house suggests that the dreamer may be feeling threatened by an aspect of his own personality.

If there are different activities going on it indicates there is a conflict between two parts of our personality, possibly the creative and the intellectual.

The front of the house portrays the front we show to the outside world.

Going into/out of the house

We may- have to decide whether we need at that time to be more introverted or more extroverted.

An impressive, awe-inspiring house In a dream like this we are conscious of the Self or the Soul.

Moving to a larger house

There is need for a change in our lives, perhaps to achieve a more open way of life, or even for more space. Being outside the house The more public side of ourselves is being depicted.

A small house, or the house where the dreamer was born

The dreamer is seeking security, or perhaps the safety of babyhood, without responsibility.

If the smallness of the house is constricting

We are being trapped by our responsibilities, and may need to escape.

Work on the house; cementing, repairing, etc.

Relationships may need to be worked on or repaired, or perhaps we need to look at health matters. We may need to take note of the damage or decay that has occurred in our lives.

Igloo - also see individual entry Because of its shape, the igloo stands for completeness and sanctuary.

It is warm on the inside and cold on the outside and therefore signifies the difference between the internal and the external.

Pyramid The pyramid is considered to be a focus for power, so for one to appear in a dream is to be concentrating on the power within.

Temple - see Church Buildings in C and Church in Religious Imagery

Tower (obelisk, steeple, lighthouse, etc.)

Any image of a tower is representing the personality, and the Soul within. While there are obvious connotations that conncct it with masculinity, it is more corrcct to perceive it as the Self within a wider context. When thought of in this way attention can then be paid to other attributes of the tower, such as where windows, doors and staircases are placed. This leads to a greater understanding of the Spiritual Self.

Warehouse

The warehouse being primarily a storage place has the symbolism of being a repository either for spiritual energy or for spiritual rubbish.

Components of buildings Balcony (or ledge, sill, etc.)

We all have need for support within our lives and a balcony indicates both support and protec- tiveness. It can also represent the Mother in her protective aspect. Construction or demolition of a building. We all have the abil- itv within us to construct successful lives and equally an ability to self- dcstruct.

A dream that highlights construction or demolition gives us access to those qualities and abilities within ourselves. Doors also see individual entry Doors refer to the openings of the body and therefore, by default, one’s scxualitv.

The front door and back door signifies the vagina and the anus respectively. Breaking down the door can be taken to indicate an inhibition over sex and an unwillingness to face the issues. It can also represent rape or abuse.

Opening and closing the door

While often taken to stand for intercourse. this can show the dreamer’s attitude to sex.

Refusing to open the door

Although the dreamer may not technically be a virgin, for this to occur represents an innocent approach to their scxualitv.

A door between the outer and inner rooms shows there mav be a conflict between the conscious and the unconscious. Barring the door This highlights the dreamer’s need for self- protection.

If an animal or person forces his way in and destroys the lock

Our own protective mechanisms have let us clown. Escaping by another door indicates the dreamer needs to find a new solution to the one he thought of to solve a problem.

Someone knocking on the door signifies that the dreamer’s attention is being drawn to an external situation.

Hall/Passages

Any passage can stand for the passages within the body; for instance the vagina or the anus. Equally; on a psychological level, it signifies how we allow our personal space to be penetrated. Passages also represent the transitions between the various stages of our lives.

Lift A lift usually indicates how we deal with information.

For instance, a lift going down would suggest going down into the subconscious, while a lift going up would be moving towards the spiritual.

It is believed that in the sleep state we leave our bodies. Thus, descending in a lift and getting stuck represents the entrapment of the spiritual by the physical body.

Rooms in a dream can describe various parts of our personalities or levels of understanding, but often signify either the womb or the mother figure. Thus the kitchen would be the home- making part of us whereas a sitting room would be the more relaxed, comfortable side.

A small room with only one door or a basement with water in it is a direct representation of the womb, and may indicate a return to the womb-like state.

A series of rooms

This refers to the various aspects of femininity and often to the whole soul. Anything in an upstairs room An upstairs room usually signifies mental or spiritual attributes, so any object will represent an idea or concept.

The basement or cellar This meaning can be ambivalent, since a cellar can represent the parts of ourselves that we have chosen to suppress. It can also represent family beliefs and habits, particularly if the basement is that of the parents. Leaving one room and going into another If this is a deliberate action in the dream, then it represents a change of state and of leaving something behind. Empty rooms Something, such as comfort or support, is lacking in our lives. Stairs Stairs are often an indication of the steps we must take in order to achieve a goal. Climbing the stairs is indicative of the effort that we must make in order to have access to the more mystical, spiritual side of our being. It can more simply be the exertion we practise in our everyday life. Going downstairs Conversely, in order to have access to the hidden unconscious side of ourselves, we need to ‘go down’ into the unconscious.

A golden staircase

This is such a basic image, with so many interpretations, that particular attention needs to be paid both to other aspects of the dream, and also the dreamers spiritual state at that specific time. Largely it represents a ‘death’, but not necessarily a physical death.

It is more the realisation that we no longer need to be trapped within the physical, but can move towards a more fulfilling life.

It is a way out of the mundane.

Walls A wall signifies a block to progress a difficulty we have or will come up against. Often the nature of the wall will give some clue as to what the block is.

For instance, a wall which looks old will signify an old problem, whereas a glass wall would indicate some difficulties with perception. Walls closing in could describe the remembered feelings of birth, but is more likely to represent a feeling of being trapped by the lifestyle we have.

A brick wall, rampart or dividing wall all signify the difference between two states of reality often the inner psychological state and the exterior everyday world.

Windows Windows will describe the means by which we appreciate the world we live in, the way we perceive reality. Dreaming that we arc looking outwards through a window can suggest that we have a more extrovert view of ourselves and will tend to look at external circumstances. Looking inwards through a window indicates we are looking inwards at our own personality, and perhaps at our own motivation. Opening a window The interpretation depends on whether we are opening the window from the inside or the outside.

If the former, we are dealing with our inner feelings which we may need to escape; the latter shows our attitude to outside opinion.

Breaking through a window (or glass door)

This can suggest the first sexual experience.

Stained glass windows

Because of the connection with churches, stained glass can be accepted as religious belief (also see Colour).... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

Buildings

(see Apartments, Barn, Castle, Church, Monastery, Te?nple)

The condition of the building can reveal the condition of your health, a relationship, or a situation.

What does the building hold? If it is just an empty shell, consider if you’re living superficially, without gaining any real spiritual substance.

Of what is the building constructed? Just like the story of “The Three Little Pigs,” you want your hopes to be based on good foundational material if they’re ever going to materialize in reality.

Are the doors and windows of this building open and accessible? If so, this shows a very open-minded person who may be too exposed. Similarly, a building that appears locked up tight indicates narrow views and large obstacles to intimacy.

What type of building is it? Certain structures carry fairly direct meanings.

For example, hotels, motels, and mobile homes represent temporary conditions, change, movement, and transition, sometimes literally in our living space.... The Language of Dreams

Buildings

General Meaning: Established works or visions in your life. Different buildings will represent different visions or ministries.

• If you are dreaming of being in a building from your past, it is possible that hurts or what happened back there is being stirred up once again in your life.

If you dream of the house you grew up in, it could indicate that you are either facing conflicts from the past or perhaps putting things from the past to rest.

• Look up the subject of Healing Dreams in the Way of Dreams and Visions for more on this.

• Office Buildings • An office building is where you work and speaks of your life in the workplace and world.

• It is also a good picture of business and wealth. In the Old Testament such business was conducted at the city gate.

• Positive: We have often seen a ribbon cutting ceremony in front a new building.

• This is a picture of a new ministry or division of the ministry that the Lord has established in the spirit.

If you are in intercession and see something like this, then the Lord is calling you to birth the new vision in the spirit.

To release it through decree.

Negative: If you see a building being demolished, you need to decide of this is a good or a bad thing. At times a prophet will be called of the Lord to speak destruction on a work that is not of Him.

Buildings

Carl Jung talked about recurring dreams he had in which he would discover parts of his house that he didn’t know existed.

In these dreams he believed the house represented his personality, and the new things he discovered in the house related to new developments in his work.

Many dream researchers subscribe to Jung’s theory and believe that buildings in dreams represent aspects of the self, or constructions we make in our lives. The upstairs represents the conscious mind, and the lower floors and cellars the unconscious, or hidden, mind. Different parts of the building might represent different times in your life, and the attitudes and beliefs you have built from experience. The features of your dream building can also mirror features of your personality; by so doing, they reflect your character, hopes and dreams, and how you feel about yourself.

If you dream of a house or a building, ask yourself what aspect of you the building represents. Does it represent how you see yourself? Is it a symbol of your body, mind or spirit? If the house is crumbling or decaying, are you in need of some kind of psychological, spiritual or physical cleaning and renewal? If the building is burning, does this show your desire to get rid of something that is holding you back? If the building is in ruins, do you feel worthless and manipulated by others? If the building is tall, does this suggest ambitions yet to be fulfilled? Is the house symbolic of your feelings in childhood or other past experiences? What are the conditions like in the house? Ask yourself what personal associations the buildings in your dreams have and what they represent to you.

The environment and your feeling reaction to the building in your dream will all contribute important clues as to its meaning, but it is also important to bear in mind the purpose for which the building is used in waking life. For example, castles and fortresses suggest protection and royalty, whereas factories suggest work and routine. Although high-rise buildings are believed to be phallic symbols, as a type they all have different functions: skyscrapers are homes and workplaces, lighthouses offer hope to sailors at sea, and towers isolate, elevate and imprison.

Churches and religious buildings offer us hope and quiet reflection, libraries and museums supply us with information and stimulate our minds. Courts provide social justice, whilst public buildings symbolize work, tax, bureaucratic or legal matters that need to be sorted. Hospitals are centers of healing and castles are historical icons. Houses, bungalows, flats, mansions and palaces offer different types of accommodation for different types of needs. Prisons are places for criminals to learn the consequences of their actions, and hotels provide a welcome break from home.

If any of these buildings appear in your dream, this chapter will help you interpret the meaning; but for domestic buildings, homes and shops you may want to refer to HOME and MONEY AND SHOPPING. For places associated with entertainment, such as cinemas and theatres, you may want to refer to ARTS AND CRAFTS and LEISURE, and for places of work and learning consult SCHOOL AND WORK.... Church Buildings

also see Church in Buildings and Religious Imagery

1- A church represents our feelings about organised religion. In dreams it can be a placc of sanctuary, particularly in the sense that we can have a shared belief with other people. This may be as much to do with a shared moral code as with a code of personal behaviour.

2- A church building may or may not be considered to be beautiful, but its image links with our appreciation of beautiful objects which mark and enhance our sense of worship. We link with the forces of life within us which enable us to live life more fully.

3- A church becomes a ‘world centre’ since it marks all that is holy and essential in our lives.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

Components Of A Building

If you dream of a balcony, ledge or sill, this suggests a need for support and protection in your life. An elevator or lift in a dream usually suggests how we deal with information.

If the lift is going down, we may be going down into our unconscious for self-understanding, whereas a lift going up could represent moving towards greater self-understanding. Halls or passageways in a dream can, for Freudians, represent passages within the body, such as the vagina or penis. On a psychological level, they can suggest how we let others invade our personal space. On a spiritual level, passages can represent the different stages of our life. A hall is the center of a building and to dream of entering a hall may therefore represent the beginnings of a journey towards self-awareness.

According to dream lore, to dream of a long hallway suggests a period of worry ahead.

Walls in dreams indicate potential blocks to your progress, or difficulties you may be up against in waking life. They suggest obstacles that are stopping you from getting what you want. This may be something from real life or something within yourself. Perhaps you are being like a brick by refusing to show your feelings, or have come up against a brick wall with a particular problem or issue.

If the wall looks old, this suggests the problem is old.

If the wall is made of glass, this suggests problems with perception.

If the wall is closing in, the dreamer may feel trapped by their current lifestyle. A brick wall, rampart or dividing wall all suggest the difference between everyday life and the inner psychological state. According to dream lore, if you find a gateway through a wall, this is a sign of good fortune. See also entries for doors, rooms, stairs, staircase and windows in HOME.... The Element Encyclopedia

Courtship

Jung identified the archetypal male and female aspects of the psyche and called them the ’anima’ and ’animus’. These form a part of what he termed the ’collective unconscious’ and play an important role in both forming your view of the opposite sex during sleep and in how you choose your partner in waking life. For example, a woman dreaming of her idealized version of a man is reflecting the masculine part of her psyche, the animus. The anima is the embodiment of the feminine parts of a man’s psyche.

If you dream that you have a sweetheart, this may represent your perfect match, prompted by the animus in women or the anima in men

A dream in which you are in love is generally a sign of reciprocated affection or the desire for it.

If the object of your affection is your partner already, this is a positive sign for the relationship but only if your partner looks contented; if he or she looks ill at ease, the signs are less positive.

If you are in a relationship and you dream of falling in love with someone else, this could be a sign that you are attracted to that person in waking life.

If this isn’t the case, try to figure out what qualities that person represents and how you can incorporate them into your current relationship.

If you dream of having rivals for the affection of your sweetheart, this could be a sign of jealousy or indecision on your part.

If you dream of your current boyfriend or girlfriend, then this is a symbol of your emotional attachment to him or her.

If you dream of an ex-lover, this does not mean that you are still in love with them; your dream is simply revisiting feelings or hopes connected with them. Your ex-lover becomes a symbol for all the hopes for love that may not currently be satisfied. In dreams, lovers may be your waking partner or your ideal wish-fulfillment partner; whoever they are, they may be compensating for a waking situation that is unsatisfactory.

If you are single and dream about a future husband or wife, this should not be interpreted literally; such a dream may be expressing some other hope for the future. For dreams about husbands or wives, see FAMILY.... The Element Encyclopedia

Crash / Shipwreck

If you are involved in (or die) in a train, bus, car, bike or airplane accident in your dream, whether or not you were driving the vehicle that crashed is significant.

If you were not driving, the dream may be urging you to take control of your life; if you were driving, the dream is urging you to alter your course or change your plans in waking life to avert disaster.

If you dreamed that you were in a ship and the water was coming overboard and submerging you, the traditional association of water with emotion suggests that you are being overwhelmed by emotion.

If this is the case, the dream is urging you to try a more logical and rational approach to your problems.

If you were attempting to save other people in your shipwreck, think about what, or who, they may represent in waking life.

If it was a child, it may represent a part of yourself you are trying to develop that might act as a counterbalance to your powerful emotions. Dreams about a shipwreck can be associated with your life course, or work life. The dream is suggesting that something going on in your present life experience may be making you feel isolated, abandoned, or on the verge of some kind of a catastrophe or tragedy.

Those who have this kind of dream are often going through a transitional period in their lives, such as a graduation or engagement. The ship therefore represents your goal, but the journey has become out of control and the horror of being dragged down by the ship captures a sense of the horror of being dragged down by traditions and expectations. This kind of dream isn’t a prediction of failure in your relationship or career; it simply indicates that details surrounding it are threatening to obscure the happiness and satisfaction you are hoping for. Digging / Growing / Watering

Just as the physical earth is made up of past events—the trees and leaves, the plants and creatures that have lived and crumbled into the dust of the soil—so the earth of your dream represents the past on which your present depends and your future is built. Therefore, digging into it will tend to uncover things—most often feelings—you have buried there from your past. The earth is also your mother. It represents the soil, the genetic material, and the background from which you have sprung. It is the womb of the past from which you are born. In other words, it is both the physical material from which things grow as well as the overall environment in which something new can grow.

So if you are digging in your dream, is there something you need to learn about your past? Or is there something you want to find out, a vital piece of information that will complete the picture? If you are uncovering an object or old bones, then you are probably becoming conscious of long buried memories and feelings from your past.

If you are trying to bury something, what are you trying to cover up or hide in waking life? Bear in mind the expressions associated with digging, too. Is someone having a dig at you in waking life? Did your dream reflect your entrenched, firmly held opinions? Or was your unconscious urging you to adopt a more down-to-earth approach? If you are a gardener, you will know that although the earth is the giver of sustenance, security and new life, each life cycle also has an end, so when earth figures in a dream, it may also indicate the end of a phase in life and the beginning of a new one

A dream about digging, watering or feeding the earth may therefore suggest your desire to begin a new phase. It could also depict your fear of unpalatable hidden truths being exposed in waking life. Anything growing from the earth in your dream shows something that has developed from the possibilities of your life, and who you are.

If your dream depicted you planting a seed, try to make a connection with your waking life. The dream seeds may refer to the planting of an intellectual or creative concept that has the potential to grow if placed in fertile ground and cared for. Then again, planting dreams may refer to your thoughts about starting a family. A dream of healthy crops may suggest that your waking ventures or family are flourishing.

If what you are taking from the earth is vegetables or things to eat, these are the fruits of your past efforts, and suggest benefits arising in your life. If, however, the earth in your dream is barren and nothing is growing, this could indicate that you are emotionally and physically exhausted by the demands of waking life.... Drowning / Crawling / Falling

Drowning in deep water suggests floundering in the depths of the unconscious. As with dreams of pursuit or being chased, this dream alerts you to areas of your unconscious that are creating conflict and need to be examined with care.

Falling and jumping in an attempt to escape from hostile pursuers in a dream is a desperate escape mechanism and suggests that you might have more success if you turn at the last minute to face your enemies, having found the strength to confront them. Dreams in which you are trying to run from something or someone but find you cannot—perhaps because your feet are weighed down or stuck in the mud—can be interpreted in much the same way.

Crawling through a narrow space, tunnel or small enclosure, or trying to squeeze through a tiny corridor or hall points to your creative energies struggling to find expression; these are, however, also common-place dreams expressing anxiety about a challenging and imminent event such as a review at work, an examination or even the birth of a new baby. Being chased, not knowing who or what is out there in the darkness, or vainly trying to push through the crowds in a busy bar, street or department store also suggest that certain repressed aspects of your personality, or unexamined aspects of the self, demand to be dealt with. To be trapped in a dream signifies that you feel you are trapped by outside circumstances. To be aware of trapping something or someone is to try to hold onto them, and if you trap a butterfly or animal, you are trying to capture your inner self. Feeling trapped in dreams also suggests an inability to break free from old patterns of thought and behavior without outside help. See also NEGATIVE EMOTIONS.... The Element Encyclopedia

Exploring A Building

Dreams about exploring a building are encouraging you to explore your own personality or resolve an ongoing conflict. In other words, the dream is encouraging you to make more of your attributes and abilities, as unexplored potential and new ideas lie within you. This is especially true if you find yourself exploring unfamiliar rooms in a well-known house in your dream.

If the building is run down or dilapidated, this may suggest a personality or body in need of attention, but if the building is well cared for and clean, it suggests confidence and good self-esteem. A building under attack may suggest that someone or something is trying to break in.

If a building is under construction or being demolished, this refers to your own ability to construct and destroy your life.

If the building is familiar, the reference may be to the actual building itself; for example, if you dream of a structural fault, you might want to get the design checked out.

If the building you are exploring in your dream is a public building such as a factory, law court, prison and department store, the building often represents the function suggested by its nature, such as work, education and healing. Bear in mind, though, that if these images appear in your dreams, they will also have personal connections and feelings associated with those buildings. For example, if a factory feels like a museum, both associations should be considered. Finally, consider carefully how you react to the building in your dream. Were you intimidated by it or did you feel comfortable? If the former, your dream may be warning that you are over-reaching yourself in waking life. The latter is more reassuring.... Falling

Some dream researchers suggest falling is one of the main themes in dreams. In the sample used for this book, the words fall, falls, fell, falling occur 72 times in 1,000 dreams.

The words find, finds, finding, found occur 297 times. And the words connected with looking and seeing occur 1,077 times.

During our development or growth we ‘fall’ from our mother’s womb when ripe; being dropped by a parent must be our earliest sense of insecurity; we fall many times as we learn to stand and walk; as we explore our boundaries in running, climbing, jumping and riding, falling is a big danger, at times it could mean death. Out of this we create the ways falling is used in dreams.

Example: ‘I am sitting in a high window box facing outwards, with my son and a friend of his on my left. I feel very scared of falling and ask my son and his friend to climb back into the building. I feel too scared to move until they shift’ (Trevor N). At the time of the dream Trevor was working, for the first time in his life, as a full-time freelance journalist. His wife was out of work and his frequency of sales low enough to cause them to be running out of money.

The building behind him in the dream felt like a place he had worked nine to five —security. Falling was failure, getting in debt, dropping into the feelings of self doubt and being incapable.

In general, then, falling represents loss of confidence; threat to usual sources of security such as relationship, source of money, social image, beliefs; tension. Sometimes it is loss of social grace; losing face, moral failure—falling into temptation; coming down to earth from a too lofty attitude, sexual surrender.

Example: ‘I was on a road which led up to the hospital I was put in at three. I felt a sense of an awful past as I looked at the road. Then I was standing on the edge of a precipice or cliff. My wife was about four yards away near the road. I stepped in an area of soft earth. It gave beneath my weight and I sank up to my waist. I realised the cliff edge was unstable and the whole area would fall. I was sinking and shouting to my wife to help me. She was gaily walking about and made light of my call for help. I cried out again. Still she ignored me. I shouted again for her help. She took no notice and I sank deeper, the ground gave way and I fell to my death’ (Barry 1). Through being put in a hospital at three without his mother, Barry had a deep seated fear that any woman he loved could desen him. His fall is the loss of any sense of bonding between him and his wife out of this fear. His death is the dying of his feeling of love and relationship, and the pain it causes. Understanding these fears, Barry was able to leave them behind in later dreams and in life.

By learning to meet our insecurities (perhaps by using the last question in dream processing) we can dare more in life. This is in essence the same as meeting the fear of falling off our bike as we learn to ride.

If we never master the fear we cannot ride. Therefore some dreams take falling into realms beyond fear.

The following examples illustrate this.

Example: ‘Near where I stood in the school gymnasium was a diving board, about 20 ft off the ground. Girls were learning to dive off the board and land flat on their back on the floor.

If they landed flat they didn’t hurt themselves—like falling backwards standing up’ (Barry I).

The school is where we learn. Once we learn to fall ‘flat on our back’, i.e. fail, without being devastated or ‘hurt’ by it, we can be more creative. Going fast to an edge and falling: could mean overwork and danger of breakdown of health.

Example: ‘As I prayed I realised I could fly. I lifted off the ground about 3 feet and found I could completely relax while going higher or falling back down. So it was like free fall. I went into a wonderful surrendered relaxation. My whole body sagging, floating in space. It was a very deep meditative experience (Sarah D). Sarah has found an attitude which enables her to soar/dare or fall/fail without being so afraid of being hurt or dying emotionally. This gives a form of freedom many people never experience. This does not arise from denying or suppressing fears.

Seeing things fall: sense of danger or change in regard to what is represented. Person falling: wish to be rid of them, or anxiety in regard to what they represent; end of a relationship. Child, son falling: see baby; son and daughter under family. House falling down, personal stress; illness; personal change and growth due to letting old habits and attitudes crumble. Example: ‘I was standing outside my mother’s house to the right.

The ground in front had fallen away.

The house was about to cave in. I felt no fear or horror. Instead I was thinking about new beginnings and the possibility of a new house’ (Helen B). Helen is here becoming more independent and leaving behind attitudes and dependency. See house; abyss; chasm. See also flying. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Falling

A warning not to be such a realist. It might be better to just let go, as in Abyss, Cliff, Shot, Parachute, Flying, and be more open to something new. Also fear of being destroyed, as in Descent. Points to loss due to miscalculation on the part of the dreamer (see the myth of Daedalus and Icarus) or is a sign of unjustified euphoria and arrogance. This symbol often appears in dreams during times when a person has difficulty achieving orgasm and during acute midlife crisis.

Doubt and insecurity. You need to let go, as in Brook, Leaf, and Parachute. Dreams of falling often appear if you are in the process of transition to a new stage in life. Particularly when you are trying out something new, you will first, just as in the dream, fall flat on your face.

A falling dream happens again and again if you are fighting against your own limitations.

It is very helpful to change falling dreams into flying dreams.

According to Freud, falling dreams are always sexual. In the case of women, the question revolves around giving in to erotic desires (fallen women). Freud has dealt with the symbol of falling extensively in his Interpretation of Dreams.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

Falling

Symbol: A bad fall into an abyss often brings an undcfinable feeling of relief.

Vision: For a woman, dreaming about falling is a metaphor for letting herself go. Falling means that you’re stumbling into an unpleasant situation. Feeling the act of falling, physically, is not a cause for alarm.

It is simply a case of “getting back into your body”—waking up too quickly It might also be a sign of low blood pressure. Falling into a ditch: your reputation will suffer. Falling over something: a certain matter is made clear to you. Stumbling without falling: things could have been a lot worse. Watching others falling: you’re going to unmask your enemies just in time. See Abyss, Fall.

Depth Psychology: Dreams about falling are a sign of the fear you have of people taking the “reins out of your hand,” of losing control. Have you lost faith in yourself, lost your sense of self-worth? .Are you afraid that others—for whatever reason—are going to “drop” you? Are you losing your good reputation? Or: have you “dropped” an old belief or opinion?... Dreamers Dictionary

Falling

Human beings have two ancient primal fears: fear of falling, and fear of loud noises.

Dreaming of falling often implies the fear of losing control and resulting disaster.

If the dreamer falls a great distance, then he should start finding solutions right away, for there is danger of severe complications.

If the dreamer falls a short distance and is unhurt, the damage will be minimal and can easily be set right.

Falling

Falling is a very common dream metaphor and it reflects in our general language. We fall in and out of love, we fall in and out with people, and we fall over ourselves and others. We fall on hard times, we fall from grace and we fall asleep! • Falling captures a primal human emotion. Falling dreams recapture that feeling of being vulnerable and out of control.

• They occur when we feel the ground beneath us has given way, or when we’re feeling particularly vulnerable or insecure as happens when we fall in love or fall out with someone.

• When this dream occurs reflect on what you feel has “fallen apart” in your life or where you feel unsupported or lacking in confidence.... The Premier in Dream Dictionary

Falling

(1) If the falling is a result of climbing or flying, the symbolism is probably straightforward: having ‘got above yourself, you are now paying the price; or the dream may be warning you of possible future disastrous consequences of present behaviour or ambitions - as in the proverbial ‘Pride before a fall’ - in which case your present ambitions are out of tune with your real self, your real capacities.

It is not necessarily a case of conscious self-aggrandizement; indeed, usually one is not conscious of it at all. Hence the need for the dream! Self-inflation may be of two kinds: where the ego is ‘possessed’ by some unconscious factor; or where the ego will not deign to pay attention to the unconscious; or both.

If you are prone to accidents, these may be symptomatic of an ego that is too much under the control of (unintegrated) unconscious forces.

(2) The fear of falling felt in a dream may be symbolic of your real-life fear of letting go. Perhaps the dream is urging you to stop resisting an impulse from the unconscious.

The anxiety expressing itself in a dream of falling may best be dealt with by letting yourself go with the fall, with a view to both finding out what it is that you are frightened of and finding a way of transforming the anxiety-response into a more positive and creative response. Strephon Kaplan-Williams recommends that you stay with the falling in the dream itself (having prepared yourself to do so beforehand), not wake up before the end of the dream. As a way of preparing yourself to do that, you might try writing out the dream again - or re-living it in imagination - only this time letting the fall complete itself. You may learn a lot from this. Falling

Normally, dreams in which you fall are the result of “falling while sleeping,” provoked by physiological causes. However, in symbolic terms they express a loss of emotional balance or self-control. Maybe you are afraid, in real life, of letting yourself get carried away. Anxiety is closely linked to this dream. It reflects insecurity, low self-confidence, fear of failure, or inability to take care of a situation. (See ABYSS)

Falling

This is a dream about the loss of control.

A fall is one of the most frequently occurring dream images, and all human beings have experienced this at one time or another.

A fall can be very frightening; however, the real danger is not the fall itself, but the sudden stop that is likely to follow. Therefore, the real source of the fear associated with this symbol is what may occur, and the anxiety about not being able to directly impact the outcome of a situation.

The deeper meaning of falling dreams is that the highest road to take in any difficult situation is to surrender yourself to the lack of control you are experiencing. In any situation where there is no control to be had, letting go is the only powerful choice to make. Most dreams of falling do not end in landing, further cementing the symbolic connection of this image with surrender. Where and how you land will be directly tied to the quality of your descent.

The more graceful the fall, the more likely you will benefit from where you wind up.

The context will offer you subtleties of meaning by examining the way you are falling in your dream. Falling backward indicates not being able to see the direction you are taking. Facing forward might enable you to see what you are facing, but your fall still indicates lack of control. Spiral twisting is an even stronger loss, as in spiraling out of control.

The amount of fear felt in the dream is the barometer of how much unconscious fear is being suppressed.

A fall that is easy and flows with a sense of surrender might be telling you that you are ready to let go of control in some situation. Falling in a dream could be compensating for some area in your life where you are reaching higher than is appropriate to your current circumstances or level of development.... Falling

Falling, and the accompanying sense of vertigo, is, along with flying, one of the most often reported dream topics. Falling dreams typically occur during the first stage of sleep. Dreams in this stage are often accompanied by muscle spasms of the arms, legs, and the whole body. Sometimes when we have these falling dreams, we feel our whole body jerk or twitch, which provokes us to awaken.

Typically, the act of falling in dreams suggests loss of control and anxiety in the sleeper’s waking life. The anxiety could be related to work, or it could be related to sexual inhibition or low self-esteem. Such may be the fear of the fall that you could awake with a jolt.

If this occurs, it is important to remember the circumstances of the fall in your dream, as this will help you understand its hidden message. According to Freudian theory, dreams of falling indicate that you are contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse. You may be lacking indiscretion. According to biblical interpretations, dreams about falling have a negative overtone and suggest that man is acting and walking according to his own way of thinking, and not that of the Lord.... Falling

Dreams of falling are extremely common. They may be prompted by your fear of heights in waking life.

If this isn’t the case, falling dreams may be your dreaming mind’s way of drawing your attention to feelings of frustration and loss of control. In which area of your life do you feel you are ‘falling down’, slipping or losing your place? Are you anxious about schoolwork, your love life, your career or your domestic life? Dreams of falling can be associated with feelings of loss of control or letting yourself down; sometimes the sensation is so terrifying that your conscious mind jerks you awake mid-flight. If, in your dream, you fall and were unharmed, this is a clear sign that your current situation is less uncertain than you think. Whatever the scenario in your dream, if falling is a part of it, your unconscious is urging you to identify the source of your feelings of uncertainty and try to find a solution even if that means accepting something less than you hoped for, or accepting your limitations. Falling / Drowning

There is an old wives’ tale that says if you dream you are falling and you hit the bottom, you will die. This is not true. Falling is one of the most common nightmares amongst people of all ages, and may be a reflection of feeling insecure, helpless or of having no support or solid grounding. Dreaming about drowning is less common and often occurs when you feel overwhelmed. Both scenarios involve life-or-death situations and can be traced back to prehistoric origins; dreams of falling reflect a time when our ancestors took risks when climbing trees. Falling dreams of modern life often take place from high buildings, elevators and rooftops. Likewise, dreams of drowning relate to our inborn need to breathe for survival. People often awake to ‘escape’ the danger in the dream.... The Element Encyclopedia

House, Buildings

A house nearly always refers to oneself, depicting one’s body and attributes of personality. Thus if we take a large house with its many functional rooms, the library would represent the mind, the bathroom cleansing or renewal of good feelings, the bedrooms one’s sexuality or intimacy, the roof one’s protectiveness or ‘coping mechanisms’. Large public buildings such as hospitals, factories, blocks of flats, depict particular functions suggested by their nature. But of course, if the house or building has a personal connection—the house you live in, or place you have worked—then you need to define what are the essential feelings about such. Or see dream processing.

If a house or building has a quality of some other type of construction, such as a library feeling like a factory, or a house a church, both aspects should be accepted as important. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Influential Relationship Theories

The Oedipus complex is one of Freud’s best-known and most influential theories in the realm of dream interpretation. The term refers to a group of largely unconscious ideas and feelings that focus on the desire to possess the parent of the opposite sex and eliminate that of the same sex. The complex is named after the mythical Oedipus, who killed his father and then married his mother without knowing they were his parents. When Oedipus discovered the truth, he felt full of remorse and even though he was not personally responsible for the crimes, he gouged out his own eyes and wandered blind and exiled.

Although the term is now applied to both men and women, at first it only referred to the male version of the complex. In women, the Electra complex was said to exist. In the myth of Electra, she masterminded the murder of her mother to avenge her father’s death. According to Freud, the Oedipus and Electra complexes are universal phenomena, being responsible for much unconscious guilt and for dreams that focus on the death of a parent or lover.

Jung saw the world of dreams and relationships quite differently.

He rejected Freud’s heavy emphasis on sexuality and the Oedipus and Electra complexes as a key to interpretation. For Jung, dreams were not just a way of helping us to understand conflicts and anxieties, but also a way to encourage the creative unfolding and development of a person’s whole potential. Jung developed a theory called the ’soul image’, in relation to the human need to create a sense of wholeness. The soul image tends to be an archetypal image. The symbols that represent the soul image often appear in dreams that involve intimacy with the opposite sex, but they can also be represented in countless other ways. For example, the sea is feminine in dreams as it is associated with waters of the womb and the earth is also feminine.

Symbols of masculinity can appear in dreams as bulls or lions or any other phallic symbol, such as a tall building. Jung felt that dreams can be used to discover and explore soul images to help us become a fuller and more balanced person.... The Element Encyclopedia

Lotus / Water Lily

The lotus or water lily was regarded in ancient Egyptian mythology as the primal flower, the source of creation. In Buddhism, it is the symbol of the individual’s spiritual development, of consciousness rising from the muddy depths of ignorance and opening to the full glory of enlightenment. The Buddhist thousand-petalled lotus symbolizes the final revelation and enlightenment. Both associations may apply to a dream of this flower. The dream may refer to a spiritual transformation or to a birth within. Are you using all aspects of your creative power or does you dream lotus inspire renewed interest in spirituality? Relationship Dreams At Different Stages Of Your Life

Dreams about relationships are extremely common. This is because the health and survival of your relationships is a primary goal for your unconscious; in your dreams it constantly reviews your relationship options, mulls things over and tries to identify what went wrong and how to do things better. It may also give you a glimpse of how different things might be if you married someone else, had an affair or got divorced.

Although the following dreams can occur at any stage of your life, you may find that the focus of your relationship dreams shifts during your lifespan. In your teenage years, dream scenarios in which you are suddenly thrown together with someone to whom you are attracted are very common. The goal of the dream is to help you determine if someone is or is not interested in you in waking life. By the mid-twenties, however, relationship dreams move beyond initial attraction and begin to explore who is or is not right for us. This is the time when strangers, celebrities and friends tend to appear as dream lovers and partners. You may find the images shocking but it is important to bear in mind that the images are unlikely to represent the real person and more likely to represent qualities that you are evaluating.

During your thirties and forties, romantic dreams focus on explanations for why relationships may have disappointed in the past and offer dreams that can show you what to go after or avoid in the future. Dreams in which your current partner or lover is unfaithful are extremely common at this time; it is as if your dreaming mind is urging you to pay attention to your relationship, and secure or safeguard what you have.

During your fifties and sixties, dreams shift their focus onto things you have learned to value in your life. Past and present partners become shorthand symbols for the quality or experience you had with them. For example, your first lover represents passion and excitement or the partner who was unfaithful represents someone who cannot be trusted. Although you may dream of people from your past, your dreaming mind is using them as symbols to refer to your current relationships. From your seventies onwards, dreams are more likely to zoom in on the very nature of love itself to help you gain a deeper understanding of love and affairs of the heart.... The Element Encyclopedia

Relationship Symbols

Animals, reptiles, birds and insects often represent aspects of relationships in dreams. Birds in particular can take on a specific meaning. For example a bird or prey, or a thieving magpie might suggest adultery or the threat of it, whilst the sweet singing of the dove or nightingale suggests harmony or the need for reconciliation between loved ones. Feathers, aside from their phallic form as quills, often represent warmth, affection and tenderness. To dream of a spider’s web might suggest insecurity about your relationships in general or the need to remove yourself from a current relationship that you are entangled in. The dream may also be warning you against becoming entrapped in an obsessive or destructive relationship.

In dreams, hotels, inns or guesthouses are symbols of the short-lived nature of some relationships, although hotels can also suggest that your relationship may be heading towards a new level of intimacy. Pay particular attention to the view from your hotel room. Is it beautiful and bright, or dark and gloomy? A harmonious serene landscape bathed in gentle light is always a comforting image and may suggest nostalgia for a lost friend or lover.

Fire gives both heat and light, and is the symbol of strong emotions such as love and anger and self knowledge. In dreams, the appearance of flames or fire may therefore be suggesting some kind of resolution or compromise with your partner. Bear in mind, though, that flames flicker and can be extinguished, so you need to act quickly before they go out.... The Element Encyclopedia

Relationships

It is common to dream about our relationships. You can interpret this dream by remembering the details and comparing them to the realities of your daily life. In your dream state you may be experiencing some wish-fulfillment or confronting things that you would normally ignore. Some say that relationships with strangers in your dream state represent the different sides of your personality. See also: Ex-boyfriend/girlfriend... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Relationships

(1) Personal relationships in dreams are always important. They fall into two categories: first, those that refer to actual waking-life relationships; secondly, those that depict relations between the conscious ego and other parts of the psyche. Meetings with strangers will nearly always belong to the second category: the strangers will be parts of your psyche that you have not yet got to know very well. And even where there is no doubt that the dream is asking you to take a serious look at an actual real-life relationship, you should bear in mind that the quality of your external relationships may be determined by the way your conscious ego relates - or fails to relate - to other parts of your psyche. For example, a man who does not acknowledge the feminine side of his own nature may have very unsatisfactory - perhaps very superficial - relationships with women. In other words, when a dream shows you in relationship with an actual real-life person, it may be inviting you to look at the relationship with a view to understanding yourself better: how you relate to other people reveals yourself (e.g. are you projecting on to the other person some unacknowledged characteristic of your own?).

Patterns in dreams correspond to patterns in your conscious life, or else - occasionally - a dream may present a pattern for you to follow in your life instead of old patterns. For example, a man may relate in dreams to very feminine women. This may represent an established pattern in his waking life, in which case he is being asked to reassess that pattern. Perhaps he is attracted only to very feminine women because he is projecting on to women his own repressed femininity and needs to

integrate his anima. On the other hand, a dream of relating to a woman in a very bold and assertive manner may be the unconscious way of telling a man he needs to display his masculinity’ more. See also Sex.

An antagonistic or belligerent relationship in a dream probablv indicates a need to be reconciled with the other, whether the other is another person or another part of yourself.

In the dream do you control, or want to control, the relationship? Perhaps the dream is a descriptive one, simply describing how, in fact, you do behave; in which case, your unconscious is probably asking you to review your situation. Perhaps you need to learn to let go, and trust people more. On the other hand, the dream may be a prescriptive one, telling you what you ought to be doing: perhaps you have been too weak and unassertive in the past. Do you tend to be, in your dreams, a mere observer, watching other people relate? Well, it is a good thing to observe, whether what you are observing is external relationships or internal relations between parts of yourself. But the process of self- discovery may be accelerated if you resolve to participate more in future dreams. Try it. Relating with your shadow may be much more revealing than just looking at it.

(2) There may be impersonal or spatio-temporal relationships between dream items or between one episode of a dream and the next. For example, an earlier dream episode may symbolize whatever is the cause of what is symbolized in the following dream episode. (But do not assume that this causal relationship always exists between different parts of a dream.)

If a person is taller than you (in a dream), this may mean that you see that person as superior to yourself.

If the person in the dream represents some part of your psyche, the meaning would then be that your conscious ego tends to submit to this other psychic component.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Relationships

People that appear in your dreams, especially strangers, tend to represent facets of yourself. In this sense, seeing the truth close to you can be impactful. Relationships and interaction that you maintain with this oneiric group of people shows the harmony that you keep within you. Also, it will manifest those parts of your personality that you do not bring to light. For example, if a man dreams of a woman, it could indicate that he needs to accept the feminine side of his nature. In the same way, if it is a woman that dreams of a man, she may need to behave in a more masculine way. Needless to say, the dream could also be representing a situation from real life and your feelings with respect to it.

The way in which the people act will tell you much about future events.

If they are friendly, it foretells happy times; if they have bad intentions, you should be cautious because an disaster could occur in your surroundings.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Relationships

Most dreams depict human relationships in one way or another, but some can highlight intimate relationships with a lover or partner.

Dreams with romantic themes are attempts to answer your questions about relationships and the nature of love. As your dreaming mind searches for answers, it will review your past and present relationships, and try out other people or even celebrities as lovers or partners in order to give you a glimpse of how different your life could be. Such dreams are significant because they can reveal things about your relationship of which you may be unaware in waking life. Because of this, they can be extremely enlightening. Some dream analysts will interpret dreams about relationships as examples of wish-fulfillment or as opportunities to get intimate with people you cannot be close to in waking life. Although this may be true in some cases—we all share the universal longing to be loved—it may not apply to all such dreams. The dreaming mind can use relationship symbols for many different associations.

This chapter focuses on dreams with a romantic theme. For dreams that concern relationships with family members, friends, celebrities and other people, see FAMILY; FAMOUS PEOPLE; GATHERINGS; PEOPLE; POSITIVE EMOTIONS. For dreams with an explicit sexual nature or content, see SEX.... The Element Encyclopedia

Religious Building

Any religious building suggests a refuge where you can gather your thoughts and consider your beliefs. Even if you are not religious, in dreams religious buildings highlight your spiritual, peace-loving and idealistic potential. Most of us have principles we live by and these may surface in your dreams in the symbol of a religious building.

If you are walking past a church or religious building in your dream, this suggests that you are not making contact with the best part of yourself. Is your waking life so crammed with obligations that you don’t have time to explore your inner world for some much-needed reflection, meditation and contemplation? If you entered a temple in your dream and immediately felt enveloped in a sense of calm, was your unconscious suggesting that you would enjoy better health if you treated your body as a temple, putting your physical, emotional and spiritual welfare first? Dreams about religious buildings may also be an expression of anger against dogma; again it depends on the feelings evoked by the building in your dream. Did you feel relieved or tense? If a vault features in your dream, it may represent your highest spiritual ideals, as vaults often appear in churches or temples with painted stars in imitation of the vault of the heavens. A vault may also recall a crypt or burial chamber, and as such, it may conjure up thoughts of death. See also RELIGION.... The Element Encyclopedia

Religious Buildings

(Such as a church, mosque or temple) as an environment for us to consider our system of belief, any religious building will suggest a place of sanctuary and refuge and a place where we can be closer to whatever concept we have of the divine or ultimate power. Ship

An oneiric ship can represent our life course and, depending on how it appears, will reveal the state of our mind.

If it is a cruise ship, the dream alludes to the pleasant calm that you are going through.

If it is a warship, you may be showing too much aggression. The appearance of a lifeboat at the scene indicates your need to escape a storm of feelings and problems in real life. If, however, is a submarine, the dream indicated your desire to explore the unconscious. On the other hand, ships also symbolize the ability to communicate with people who are far away, whether geographically or in their way of thinking and feeling. For this reason, a journey by sea means you have begun a new life stage or a new relationship. By contrast, in this sense, a ship that sinks warns of the danger of a breakup. (See WATER, BOAT, and SHIPWRECK)

Ship

A ship is a vehicle that travels on the ocean.

The ocean represents the unconscious mind, and a ship traverses the very top layer of this mysterious place. In a dream, a ship implies an investigation of matters of an emotional nature.

The state of the ship in your dream offers distinctions around this exploration.

A sinking ship implies that your feelings are overwhelming you in a profound way.

A more powerful ship, such as one that is run by steam or motors, suggests that there is more strength around what you are exploring.

A sailing ship implies a simpler or personal search, but also one that relies on things beyond your ability to control. Large bodies of water are natural symbols of both the unconscious and the emotions. Thus, a ship may represent a vessel of the self moving through the dreamer’s emotions or unconscious. Many other interpretations are possible, depending on whether the ship is large and secure or small and fragile, whether the body of water is smooth and peaceful or disturbed and dangerous, and so on. Naturally, if the dreamer is a sailor, an engineer, or someone else for whom ships are part of daily life, the ship would probably have a more mundane meaning as simply the stage setting for his or her everyday activities.... Ship, Shipwreck

Symbol: The ship is a symbol of your journey in life and from birth to death.

Vision: In a mans dream, the ship represents his longing to love a woman (a battleship stands for a prostitute, a sailboat for a young girl).

A departing ship means a separation or change. Being a passenger on a ship: you are dissatisfied with your life and want a change. Boarding the wrong ship: take a close look at your professional and personal relationships and goals—you have made wrong decisions.

The ship sinking: a serious warning about an unhealthy relationship.

Depth Psychology: The “ship of your life” can bring you to happy as well as unhappy places. Did the ship travel in “calm Waters”? Was it tossed about by waves or a violent Storm? Did you know its destination? The rest of the images are very important, because they might indicate if you are on the “right course” or if you should turn around.

Unlike rivers and seas, lakes, lagoons, pools, ponds and puddles are typically still, so if they feature in your dream, they could be reflecting your emotional calm.

If a lagoon appears mysteriously, reminding you that still waters run deep, this could be referring to your own hidden strengths or weaknesses. Some dream researchers believe that lagoons in dreams are symbols of the womb, so perhaps when they appear in a dream, you are longing to retreat to a safe haven.

If you are a woman, they may refer to a desire for children and if you are a man, a longing for intimacy. Dream ponds can also reflect your unconscious personality, facets of which will be represented by the creatures who live in it.

If your dream pond is lifeless and stagnant, is your emotional life currently unfulfilling? If you watched a fish swim to the surface, could it have represented the emergence of your intuition? If the pool suddenly transforms into a whirlpool or maelstrom, this suggests emotional turbulence or confusion in waking life.... The Element Encyclopedia

Teeth Falling Out

You are feeling insecure about some area of your life. Teeth serve three primary functions. They allow us to process our food so we can nurture ourselves. They express joy when revealed in a smile, and they can indicate aggression when exposed in a snarl. All of these things—nurturance, joy, and protection—connect directly to security and well-being.

If individuals cannot nurture themselves, attract loving connections, and protect themselves from danger, the basic constructs of a secure life are not likely to be available to them. Without these three important parts of life, fear will prevail. Therefore, when this dream image appears, issues of personal security are at the forefront of your unconscious expression. There are various levels of intensity associated with this symbol. It can fluctuate from a slightly loose tooth to having all your teeth crumble out of your mouth in a bloody mess.

The scale of intensity of the dream will indicate the amount of fear being expressed. Whether it is a general fear of being out of control, looking bad, aging, or some other issue of unmet needs, the appearance of this dream indicates underlying insecurity in some area of your waking life.

The teeth are used for chewing, and this association can indicate a need to “chew on something for a while,” as in mulling over a choice or course of action. “Sinking your teeth into something” refers to taking on life wholeheartedly. Losing your teeth in a dream could indicate an inability or unwillingness to do so. Losing our teeth as children is such a powerful rite of passage. On some level, losing your teeth in a dream will connect to the process of growing up, even in adulthood.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Teeth Falling Out Or Crumbling

This dream might have a physical origin in people gritting or grinding their teeth during sleep. Freud suggested that dreams of teeth falling out are related to fears of castration, but women have this dream as often as men, suggesting that tooth troubles in dreams are related to hidden anger, with a dreamer acting out the clenching of teeth. Other dream analysts believe the dream reflects anxiety about appearance and how others perceive you. Teeth can also represent a means of assimilating knowledge so it can be used. Teeth are the first instruments of the digestive system, so in dreams they represent the acquisition of knowledge.

Losing teeth is a common symbol in a dream, indicating a change in the way the dreamer assimilates what is learned.... The Element Encyclopedia

The Element Of Water

In dreams, water is a common theme and its association with the fluid of the womb and its role in evolution make it an archetypal symbol in the dreamer’s emotional life.

Water is also a symbol of the spiritual life force. In most cultures there are tales of healing waters and in dreams, as in baptism, to be immersed in water is to be spiritually cleansed. As the governing element of the Zodiac signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, it is said to endow people born under that sign with the feminine qualities of gentleness and changeability.

Dreams of entering water suggest refreshment, healing and beginning something new. Deep water, pools and lakes are symbols of the unconscious or of being out of your depth, while shallow water represents a lack of energy. To dream of drawing water from a tap or well, or to be drinking it is in general a positive and creative sign. However, to spill water suggests setbacks. Flowing water signifies peace and security. To be immersed in water suggests pregnancy and birth or new beginnings, and coming out of water also suggests a fresh start. Fast-flowing water suggests lively encounters and fastmoving action; deep, still water suggests hidden depths, whilst also possibly warning against a person of few words with a hidden agenda.

If you see your reflection in water, this suggests the transient nature of life since the reflection can easily be lost.

The imagery may serve as a caution against trusting unworthy friends or projects.

If, in your dream, the water is dirty or muddy, it means your feelings are influenced by outer circumstances, worries, material problems, or values. If, however, the water is clear and sparkling, it symbolizes faith, honesty, hope and joy. Have you dreamed of boiling water? If you have, this may indicate the need to let off some steam. Is anything welling up that needs your attention? If you are on the water, for example in a boat, this suggests lack of emotional commitment, whilst to be in the water but not moving suggests fatigue.

If you dream of the elements of water and air clashing—such as strong winds creating a stormy sea—the symbolism suggests you might be contemplating human emotion in general, with all its ebb and flow from rage to calm and rage again. Finally, don’t forget that dreams featuring water may simply be triggered by raging thirst or a full bladder while you sleep.... The Element Encyclopedia

Traveling And Water

In Greek mythology, river crossings are often associated with death or a journey into the unconscious and they may have this same association in your dreams. It takes great physical effort to row a boat or canoe, and your dream may be emphasizing how demanding your journey of personal growth is. For Freudians, a rowing boat or canoe is a phallic symbol, and the act of rowing or paddling a canoe indicates masturbation. A dream of a barge or towpath suggests heavy emotional burdens slowing your progress in life, whilst if you are swimming in your dream, this is often interpreted as representing a desire for sex or a wish to return to the safe waters of the womb.

According to Jung, swimming towards land suggests a desire for rebirth or renewal, but swimming against the tide suggests personal struggles.... The Element Encyclopedia

Underwater Scene

A journey into the unconscious may be symbolized by an underwater dream. The underwater descent is a journey of discovery into your unknown parts and is a sign that you are ready to explore your own intuitive and instinctive aspects. The symbolism may also be a representation of the womb, the underwater scene symbolizing regression and the hope of rebirth. Perhaps you are feeling helpless, unable to care for yourself and long to return to a stage where you are dependent and free of responsibilities. To dream that you are underwater may also indicate that you are feeling overcome with emotions and are in need of greater control in your life, or that you may be in over your head regarding some situation.

How the water behaves in your dream is also significant. Rising water indicates rising emotions. Turbulent, choppy waters symbolize being overwhelmed emotionally. Being caught in a swift moving current suggests being ’swept up’ in one’s emotions. Cloudy water suggests lack of emotional clarity or a fear of emotional contamination. Swimming or bathing peacefully in water symbolizes a comfortable immersion in your emotions. The ability to breathe underwater and interact with creatures of the sea indicates that you have access to your unconscious feelings and awareness. Seeing a diver or becoming a diver suggests that you are delving into your unconscious, or trying to ’get to the bottom’ of a current situation or problem. Not surprisingly, Freudians believe that underwater diving may have sexual connotations and represents intercourse.

In addition to fish and sea creatures, what you observe in your underwater dream may be significant.

If you see a sea chest, this indicates what you carry with you on your spiritual quest, or in everyday terms, your spiritual baggage. The sea floor refers to your spiritual foundations. Is it ablaze with color and life, or barely inhabited? Sea foam stands for spiritual confusion or a stirring of your beliefs, seafood for spiritual knowledge and nourishment. Recall the condition and type of food. Sea level pertains to spiritual truths, whilst sea legs suggest spiritual comfort or feeling at home with your spirituality. Sea monsters suggest spiritual danger and an earthquake at sea warns that your beliefs might be shaken. Sea salt stands for strong spiritual beliefs, seashells for spiritual gifts and talents. Recall the quality and quantity of the shells. Sea slugs warn of spiritual laziness or entrapment, sea snails denote a slow and steady progress with your spiritual development, sea sponges stand for spiritual over absorption and sea spray represents spiritual gifts or insights. Finally, coral symbolizes your spiritual attributes, coral fish stand for spiritual protectiveness and guarding your beliefs from outside influences and a coral reef represents the difficulties of maintaining a spiritual balance in the physical world.... Water

To dream of clear water, foretells that you will joyfully realize prosperity and pleasure.

If the water is muddy, you will be in danger and gloom will occupy Pleasure’s seat.

If you see it rise up in your house, denotes that you will struggle to resist evil, but unless you see it subside, you will succumb to dangerous influences.

If you find yourself baling it out, but with feet growing wet, foreshadows trouble, sickness, and misery will work you a hard task, but you will forestall them by your watchfulness.

The same may be applied to muddy water rising in vessels.

To fall into muddy water, is a sign that you will make many bitter mistakes, and will suffer poignant grief therefrom.

To drink muddy water, portends sickness, but drinking it clear and refreshing brings favorable consummation of fair hopes.

To sport with water, denotes a sudden awakening to love and passion.

To have it sprayed on your head, denotes that your passionate awakening to love will meet reciprocal consummation.

The following dream and its allegorical occurrence in actual life is related by a young woman student of dreams: ``Without knowing how, I was (in my dream) on a boat, I waded through clear blue water to a wharfboat, which I found to be snow white, but rough and splintry.

The next evening I had a delightful male caller, but he remained beyond the time prescribed by mothers and I was severely censured for it.’’ The blue water and fairy white boat were the disappointing prospects in the symbol. ... Ten Thousand Dream Interpretation

Water

Water is a very common but powerful dream symbol. Its meaning varies with the details and the mood of the dream. Water is a deeply spiritual symbol representing the “water of life” or the “flow of life.” Large bodies of water usually represent our unconscious minds or/and soul experiences. Water symbolizes emotions (rough, smooth, clear, murky, etc.). Freud thought that since fluids are involved in sexual activities, at times, water in dreams has sexual connotations. Water

Emotions, moods and flow of feeling energy. Because of the nature of water it lends itself to depicting aspects of how we relate to emotions; for instance, one can drown’ in or feel swept away by some emotions, at other times we can feel cleansed and refreshed. It also represents our potential to experience many emotions because water can take any shape or move in so many ways. How we relate to the water shows how we are meeting our emotions and moods.

Example: ‘I am in deep water, no evidence that it is the sea. I am wearing my heavy brown coat. I have no fear, no feeling of cold and I pleasantly just sink’ (Mrs B). Mrs B is in her 80s, and is preparing for death in her dreams.

The water in her dream has the feeling of being womblike, suggesting that she senses death as a return to a womblike feeling state, with possible rebirth.

Example: ‘I was then standing in front of a senes of glass water tanks. I had apparently written an article about the balance between intellect and emotion, which had presented emotion in a way to show its equal value with intellect.

The tanks had water flowing through them with a series of valves. This demonstrated the different relationships between intellect and emotion. Some tanks were beautifully clear and colourful, showing the right balance.

The unbalanced ones had weed growing in them. I was then in a lift with a young woman. We moved close together and kissed. This moved my feelings so much I felt a great melting feeling in my abdomen, and a lot of body sensation against her body’ (Anthony F). Anthony’s dream perfectly illustrates how water refers to the emotions and flowing body feelings.

Example: ‘I was in a hospital ward—maybe for children. I was there to help them. In the ward was a large oblong tank full of water. I got into the water. I realised all the sick people in the ward bathed in the water—not soap, just immersion. This produced feelings of revulsion. I felt I would take into myself their sickness. I also thought that if I drank the water it would show the patients a positive attitude towards their sickness. They would no longer be afraid, and this would be a factor in their healing’ (Anthony F). Another of Anthony’s dreams in which he is looking at how to meet anxious feelings about his health. He sees that a more positive conscious attitude heals the childhood fears.

Entering water: entering into strong feelings such as might arise in a relationship or new job, sexual relationship, emotions which might stand in one’s way—as a deep lake might, or turgid water. Deep water: the deeps of one’s inner life. Hot water: strong emotions—see example in Introduction. Electricity and water: emotions which can generate very powerful reaction to a situation, such as jealousy or anger. Idioms: make water, muddy the waters; tread water, water something down; turn on the waterworks; water under the bridge; hold water, in hot water, head above water; pour cold water onto something. Water

See River, Sea, Ocean. This dream symbol can be interpreted on five different levels:

(1) on the sexual level

(2) on an emotional level where your own emotions are perceived as undifferentiated and flowing

(3) as a fear of flooding, being drowned by the unconscious

(4) as a feeling of going with the flow

(5) as a feeling that life is chaotic.

This symbol is also the desire for a totally new orientation.

In alchemy, water is connected to feelings; it represents the wild nature of the soul in need of being conquered. Water is the place where the souls of the dead meet the spirits of the water; it is a place of repression, of secrets with unknown depths and an element of rapture. It can tear us away and sweep us off, and it can be very frightening. Water is the symbol of what is changeable. Diving into the water means to seek wisdom. Whoever looks into the water always sees the Self.

Water symbolizes women, the process of birth and pregnancy. Running water means experiencing sexuality in a positive sense. Standing water means losing vitality and your very center. Or it might mean, as in Pond and the fountain of youth, that water is the carrier of life’s energies and rejuvenation. Out of this understanding might have come the ritual of baptism.

Falling into the water means being swept away by emotion; hut this may also he a warning dream, pointing also to Diving and Drowning.

According to the Chinese understanding of nature, water is a symbol of the elemental, female force of yin.

For the Taoist, water is the essence of life, its movement an example for a life lived in harmony with nature.

The holy water in the Catholic Church and the water used for baptism represent the healing powers of water.

According to Freud, a water dream is often the memory of our life in our mother’s womb. And again, according to Freud, to come out of water represents the image of birth. Water for him was always connected to birth. See Baptism, Swimming, Bath, Diving, Tears, Drinking, Birth (rebirth).... Little Giant Encyclopedia

In baptism, water is a cleanser of previously held ‘sins’, often also those inherited from the family. Entering water suggests beginning something new. Deep water signifies either being out of depth, or entering our own subconscious.

3- Spiritual rebirth The Life-force.

Water appears so often in dreams as an image, with so many different meanings, that it is possible only to suggest sonic probable ones. Thus, being immersed in water can suggest pregnancy and birth. Flowing water signifies peace and comfort, while rushing water can indicate passion. Deep water suggests the unconscious, while shallow water represents a lack of essential energy. Going down into water indicates a need to renew one’s strength, to go back to the beginning, while coming up out of the water suggests a fresh start.

To be on the water (as in a boat) can represent indecision or a lack of emotional commitment, while to be in the water but not moving can suggest inertia. Other images associated with water are:

Bathing suggests purification.

Canals svmbolise the birth process.

Dams, islands and other obstacles are conscious attempts to control the force of the water, and therefore our emotions. Diving represents going down into the unconscious, or perhaps trying to find the parts of ourselves which we have suppressed. Drowning highlights our ability to push things into the unconscious only to have them emerge as a force which can overcome us. Floods represent the chaotic side of us, which is usually uncontrollable. This side requires attention when it wells up and threatens to overwhelm us.

Fountains suggest womanhood, and particularly the Great Mother (see Introduction).

Lake

A lake, like a pool, can signify a stage of transition between the conscious and the spiritual Self. When come upon unexpectedly it can give us the opportunity to appreciate and understand ourselves.

To be reflected in a pool indicates the dreamer needs to conic to terms with the Shadow (see Introduction). We must learn to acccpt that there will be a part of ourselves that we do not like very much but, when harnessed, it can give much energy for change. Rivers or streams always represent the dreamer’s life and the way that he is living it. It will depend on the dreamer’s attitude as to whether he see his life as a large river or a small stream.

If the river is rushing by we may feel that life is moving loo quickly for us.

If we can sec the sea as well as the river, we may be aware that a great change must occur or that attention musl be paid to the unconscious within.

If the river is very deep we should perhaps be paying attention to the rest of the world, and how we relate to it. Crossing a river indicates great changes.

If the river causes fear we are perhaps creating an unnecessary difficulty for ourselves.

If the water in the river appears to be contaminated we are not doing the best we can for ourselves.

Sea or ocean The sea very often represents cosmic consciousness, that is, the original chaotic state from which all life emerges. Inherent in that state is all knowledge i.e. completedness, although that may be obscured by our fear of the depths. We do not fear that which we understand.

A shallow sea suggests superficial emotion.

The waves in the sea represent emotion and lust.

A calm sea suggests a peaceful existence, while a stormy sea signifies passion, either negative or positive.

Water

(see Flood, Fountain, Ice, River, Rain, Snow)

Changing tides: Among the Teutonic people, each tide carried different meanings that may apply to your dream.

The tide occurring just before sunup is one of introspection, while the one at dawn bears fertile waves. Noon tides speak of tenacity, dusk tides bring transformation, the night tide edifies, and the one occurring at midnight heals.

An ocean: The earth’s womb and beginnings of all humankind. Also representative of the vast subconscious, superconscious, or Jungian Collective Unconscious (see Abyss).

Among Native Americans, water appearing in dreams indicates your spiritual state.

For example, if the water is flowing smoothly, your spirit is calm and moving in a natural direction.

Moving water: Hie seen and unseen ebb and flow of all energies.

Baptism: New life, forgiveness toward yourself, and renewed purity’ of thought and actions (see Baby).

Bathing: Getting rid of your figurative “dirt” like old habits, guilt, anger, and even sexual repression (e.g., feeling “dirty”).

Hot water: Trouble s afoot, so look for the wellhead (see Temperature).

Drowning in water: Overwhelming circumstances, problems, or emotions that threaten to defeat your efforts or sense of individuality. Esoterically, this may also reflect a memory from a past life experience (see Choking, Suffocation).

Floating upon: Dependence on your feminine nature or a mother figure. Alternatively, skimming the surface of spiritual potentialities without ever really diving in and experiencing that aspect of self.

Stagnant water: Something, often a situation, that is unhealthy for you to the point where it causes a standstill in personal growth and in your quest for wholeness.

Shallow water represents a similarly frivolous personality that avoids delving into any aspect of life too deeply. Alternatively, this can represent a fear of confronting the depths of your own suhconscious.

Tidal waves: Powerful emotions or instincts that you have let build up to a critical mass. This dream reveals the need to express those things before they come crashing over the floodgates.

Surfing on water: Taking control of, and accepting the power in, the feminine aspects of self and the Universe. Also maintaining a rather haphazard balance between the intuitive nature (the water) and the conscious self (the surfer).

A geyser: A sudden, unanticipated outpouring of creativity, goodness, inspiration, spiritual gifts, or whatever.

Wearing a life preserver in the water represents getting a second chance at something. Grab it before it gets away!

Ripples appearing on the water’s surface indicate the waves of energy we send out without even knowing it, similar to a web. This will eventually touch everything and everyone because you are part of the network of life.

Lakes: As the abode of several magical creatures, including the Lady of the Lake and water nymphs, dream lakes reflect the search for the wonders that lie just beyond the surface of reality. What does the surface of the lake cover? Are you fishing here, thereby trying to catch a little magic?... The Language of Dreams

Vision: Water dreams are always a symbol of a cleansing process and emotional stirrings.

If the water is clear, it means luck at work and in your private life.

If the water is muddy: don’t get involved in a questionable transaction—you are fishing in murky waters. Drinking freshwater: you are very healthy and will reach a ripe old age.

If the water is unsettled: expect the next few days to be likewise. Seeing your image reflected in the water: you are only fooling yourself. In a woman’s dream, luxuriating in water is a sign of a healthy attitude toward sex and an overall positive disposition. See Fish, Lake, Ocean, Pond, River.

Depth Psychology: Water is the symbol of life-giving and life-preserving energies and always a sign of your emotional state.

Water

Dreams about water are associated with emotions, sexuality, cleansing, healing and that you are exploring the infinite depth of your unconscious mind. You are connecting with the essence of your being, and are going with the flow. Because water is associated with the cycles of the tides, it is also associated with your feminine energy. So, if you dream of water spilled all over the floor, then this represents that your feminine side, emotions or creativity are feeling out of control.

If water is contained in a glass or jar, then you may be feeling that your feminine side, emotions or creativity is being suppressed.

If water is flowing, as in through a hose or river, then this symbolizes that you feminine side, emotions and creativity is in full flow. Keep in mind, that you are, after all, comprised of 90% water. See Moon or Ocean.... Strangest Dream Explanations

Water

Water is such a life giving force that it symbolizes the flow of life energy itself.

It is a rather mysterious substance, given that it has the ability to flow through, over and round objects. It has the quality of being able to wear away anything that gets in its way. It can symbolize spiritual rebirth. In baptism, water is a cleanser of previously held ‘sins’, often also those inherited from the family. Water

Psychological / emotional perspective: Water symbolizes our emotions under all sorts of different circumstances so images associated with it are very evocative. Below are some such representations: bathing suggests purification. Canals symbolize the birth process. Dams, islands and other obstacles are conscious attempts to control the force of the water, and, therefore, our emotions. Diving represents going down into the unconscious, or perhaps trying to find the parts of ourselves that we have suppressed. Drowning highlights our ability to push things into the unconscious, only to have them emerge as a force that can overcome us. Floods represent the chaotic side of us, which is usually uncontrollable. This side requires attention when it wells up and threatens to overwhelm us. Fountains suggest womanhood, and particularly the great mother.

A lake, like a pool, can signify a stage of transition between the conscious and the spiritual self. When come upon unexpectedly it can give us the opportunity to appreciate and understand ourselves.

To be reflected in a pool indicates we need to come to terms with the shadow. We must learn to accept that there will be a part of ourselves that we do not like very much but, when harnessed, it can give much energy for change. Overflows and overflowing can signify an excess of energy, often emotion that is too much to be contained. Rivers or streams always represent our lives and the way that we live them. It will depend on our attitude as to whether we see our life as a large river or a small stream.

If the river is rushing by we may feel that life is moving too quickly for us.

If we can see the sea as well as the river, we may be aware that a great change needs to occur or that attention must be paid to the unconscious within. Crossing a river indicates great changes.

If the river is very deep we should perhaps be paying attention to the way we relate to the rest of the world.

If the river is frightening we are perhaps creating an unnecessary difficulty for ourselves.

If the water in the river appears to be contaminated we are not doing the best we can for ourselves. Seas or oceans very often represent cosmic consciousness – that is, the original chaotic state from which all life emerges. Inherent in that state is all knowledge – i.E. Completeness – although that may be obscured by our fear of deep emotion; we do not fear that which we understand.

A shallow sea suggests superficial emotion.

The waves in the sea represent strong emotion and passion.

A calm sea suggests a peaceful existence, while a stormy one signifies passion, either negative or positive.

To be conscious of the rise and fall of the tides is to be conscious both of the passage of time and of the rise and fall of our own emotions. Waterfalls symbolize any emotion that reaches the stage where it must ‘spill over’ in order to become manageable.... Dream Meanings of Versatile

Material aspects: Water is usually taken in dreams to symbolize all that is emotional and feminine. Water can also stand for our potential and our ability to create a new life for ourselves in response to our own inner urgings. Water also represents cleansing, being able to wash away the contamination that we may experience in everyday life. Water appears so often in dreams as an image, with so many different meanings, that it is possible only to suggest some probable ones. Entering water suggests new beginnings and being immersed in water is a return to the womb and can suggest pregnancy and birth. Flowing water signifies peace and comfort, while rushing water can indicate passion. Deep water suggests the unconscious and can also indicate that we feel out of our depth, while shallow water represents a lack of essential energy.

To be on the water (as in a boat) can represent indecision or a lack of emotional commitment, while to be in the water but not moving can suggest inertia. Going down into water indicates a need to renew one’s strength, to go back to the beginning, while coming up out of the water suggests a fresh start.... Dream Meanings of Versatile

Water

General Meaning: The force that brings about the washing in our lives.

The Word of God and the anointing are both depicted by Water in the Scriptures.

• Positive: Being washed with water speaks of being cleansed and of putting things behind you. It also speaks of being cleansed from your sin.

• Water is a picture of the anointing. John 4:14 Water is also a picture of the Word of God, and how it sets us free from the dirt in our lives.

• Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the [rhema] word, • To water something means to nurture it and to give it life.

If you are in ministry, then it means that you should be watering the seeds that have been planted in the hearts of God’s people.

• This is primarily a teaching function, just as Apollos functioned in.

• 1 Corinthians 3:61 have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Negative: Water that is bitter or dirty speaks of a contamination, likely stemming from bitterness.

• It speaks of those that really do have a ministry, but unfortunately are in deception. They have allowed some things in their life that are not of the Lord.

• To dream of being in unclean water speaks of the things you are getting involved in.

• Instead of walking in the spirit, by getting involved with these things or feeding on things that are not of God, you are contaminating your spirit.

• It could also indicate that the ministry you have been receiving is not pure and directly from the Lord. Some of it is tainted with the flesh and man’s ideas.

• When I train God’s leaders I share how the Lord takes them through training to get rid of their own ideas.

• The revelation and the anointing that God gives is pure when it comes from your spirit. However if your mind is filled with things of the world or your own ideas, you end up tainting that word. Then what comes out is only a part Christ, and the rest is your own ideas!

Water

(see also Baptism, Bath, Drowning, Fountain, River, Sea, Tidal Wave, Well)

(1) Water may symbolize emotion or psychic energy.

It is therefore important to notice whether the water is free-flowing or stagnant (or frozen: see Ice), clean or foul.

(2) Water is a common symbol of fertility, growth, creative potential (especially if it takes the form of a reservoir or still lake), new life, or healing.

(3) It is also a symbol of the unconscious, especially if it is deep.

(4) It is a feminine symbol, representing either your own femininity (whether you are male or female), or your mother.

It is therefore important to note your reaction to the water in your dream. Are you afraid of water in real life? This may mean you are afraid of women (if you are a man), of your mother, or of your unconscious.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Water

Psychology attributes water to the unconscious desire to return to our mother’s lap.

Water symbolizes life, feelings, fertility, and abundance. Thus, this type of dream plays an important role, though the meanings attributed to it vary. Water quality, therefore, reveals your emotional state.

If water is clear, your feelings are pure and you enjoy a blissfully peaceful period. But if it is muddy, you will suffer personal or health complications.

If there is water in the form of large ground-breaking waves, you might feel out control.

If it is a river, the flowing pace will express the calm or anguish of your emotions. Likewise, to see dirty and stagnant water reveals insincerity in your feelings.

If the water comes from a lake or a stream, it is indicative of emotional passivity. Similarly, fine rain is usually a symbol of fertility, which predicts success in your projects. Heavy rains, however, announce unattended desires and disputes. (See BOAT, SHIPWRECK, and SHIP)

Water, depending on its condition, may portend very different situations. When fresh, it denotes fortune and health. Boiling: anger or illness. Mild: temporary discomfort. Muddy water indicates obstacles in business. Stagnant and putrid water: illness or death. Flowing water: good luck and good health. Saltwater portends tears. Looking at water ensures safety from a danger. Bathing is a sign of innocence. To pour it: litigation. Walking on water represents triumph. To see a spring: improvement of a distressing situation. The water of a bathtub means happy old age.

WATER - analysis of the dream

Lucia dreamed: “I was sunbathing on a paradisiacal island of fine sand and crystalline waters. The sun was warming my body up while I was listening to the waves gently lapping. I felt really good, confident, and happy. Suddenly, I saw a huge wave coming, and before I could react, it invaded the whole beach. The sky turned black and a strong storm completely changed the landscape. At that point, there was no island, no sand, no firm land, and I was floating in the water frightened. I suddenly remembered that I did not know how to swim.”

When Lucia had this dream she had just begun an affair with a man; she had long been in love with him. The calm sea and the idyllic landscape reflected her confidence and initial joy. However, the water fiercely flooding the beach was warning her against the risk of drowning due to excessive enthusiasm. Any dream in which the water is stagnant is a warning sign indicating that we should give more freedom to our emotions. In Lucia’s case, the sea flowing freely—first in gentle waves and then stormy—is an indication that she was letting her feelings blossom.

By analogy of uterus and birth, dreams in which water appears may relate to feeling like getting ready for a new life or the desire to change old habits. The island represents Lucia’s individualism, her independent and safe live that was threatened by the arrival of romance and the overflowing torrent of emotions that it implied. The effect of drowning announced a condition of emotional tension due to a new situation.

Water

Water is the ultimate symbol of emotions in a dream. It also connects to things that rise up out of the unconscious mind. In fact, it could be said that emotions themselves are evidence of something that is occurring in the unconscious mind. In this way, water connects to both emotions and the unconscious. Human beings are made up of a great deal of water, and the welling up of feelings can cause this precious liquid to leak inexplicably out of your eyes in the form of tears. In this way, the presence of any water in a dream is asking you to consider the emotional side of your nature.

The larger the body of water, the more feelings the dream is expressing.

If the water is potentially overwhelming or dangerous, as in a tidal wave or waterfall, then the sense of danger must be added to your interpretation, as we are often afraid of feelings when they are greater than we think we can handle. Feelings flow and so does water, so the quality of movement of the water in your dream is pointing out the way in which you are experiencing your emotions.

A slow creek is like a small amount of emotional flow that is significant but sustaining and calming.

A raging river is more like the force of feelings that are much more intense and, if not navigated well, can be dangerous to your sense of well-being. Rain is the most like tears, and weather patterns in dreams that involve water may be pointing out the way you are experiencing or avoiding the easy flow of emotions associated with some current life experience.... Waterfall

Water generally represents the unconscious and the emotions.

A waterfall is a positive dream symbol that suggests a cleansing of negative emotions or psychological issues. Just a simple visualization or a daydream of standing in a waterfall makes a person feel energized and refreshed.

If the waterfall in your dream is overwhelming or too powerful for you to enjoy, it may represent emotional energy and unconscious drives that are very difficult to effectively cope with on the conscious level. See also: Water... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Waterfall

It is a sign of abundance and vitality. A continuous flow of elements that are renewed. It indicates events that develop in healthy and enjoyable manner. Everyday life is cheerful and without monotony. However, the context of the dream and the conditions of the waterfall are crucial for interpretation. Waterfall / Fountain / Spring / Rapids / Well

Dreams of a waterfall or rapids may be referring to birth, especially ones in which you are swept along in a warm stream of water through a tunnel and emerge into a pool or lagoon, as it is thought that we all carry the memory of birth in our unconscious. On the other hand, the dancing waters may be reflecting your sense of happiness and exuberance in waking life. A dream of a fountain (suggests womanhood) or a hosepipe (suggests manhood) may have a sexual connotation.

If the jet was weak, then it may suggest that sexual desire is not matched by emotional commitment (or the other way round) A steady flow of water is probably symbolic of confidence in waking life.

In dreamland, springs can represent a source of untapped creativity and they can also hint at wisdom, because another name for spring is fount, suggesting ‘fount of all knowledge’. Wells in dreams can hint at emotional rebirth or good fortune, as wishing wells have been credited with wish- fulfillment for centuries. So if you dreamed of drawing water from a well, what is it that you long for? Because wells are sources of water, it could be that your waking life has become emotionally dry and that you are thirsting for a revival of feeling.... The Element Encyclopedia

1- Dreaming of being in a situation where we arc worshipping something such as an idea, a person, a concept or an object is to be opening ourselves up to its influence.

If we are not particularly religious but find ourselves in the middle of an act of worship we mav need to look at how we deal with a common belief svstem or set of principles.

2- Sometimes, as we move towards a greater sense of Self, dream images materialise which indicate that we arc in a position to be worshipped. This may mean we need to take a careful look at whether we are developing an inflated idea of our own importance, or whether we are actually learning to accept that part of ourselves which is of value to other people.

To be worshipping an object which is not a religious image may suggest that we are paying too much attention to whatever that object represents.

For instance, we may be too materialistic, be paying too much attention to sex and so on.
