Alligator

This cold-blooded animal could hold several different meanings in your dream. It could symbolically represent something from your memory, emotions, or a current situation or individual in your life. Some think that the alligator represents verbal power used in a destructive way (angry and hurtful words). Others believe that it represents an enemy. Consider the details in your dream and your level of fear. This dream symbol should encourage you to look at some of your more “dangerous” emotions, memories, and experiences.

The alligators in your dreams will begin to lose the power to frighten you as your understanding increases. Carl Jung said that all wild animals indicate latent affects (feelings and emotions that we do not readily deal with). Alligator

To see an alligator in your dream represents dishonesty, deception, and a false facade. It may indicate that you should step back and reevaluate your position or view of a certain matter. It may also represent your ability to move between the material world of waking life and the emotional, repressed world of the unconscious. In addition, the alligator can symbolize the ability and talent to cure or revitalize.

To dream that you are running away from the alligator denotes your refusal to face a distressing or upsetting matter. You may be harboring a negative feeling. There is some potentially destructive emotion that you don’t want to admit you possess. All reptiles connect with a primitive orientation toward survival and other basic instincts. Since alligators are water dwellers, their meaning and power are associated with emotional territory. They have a level of ferocity, so they also connect with scary and dangerous feelings that live just below the surface of consciousness. When dreaming of alligators, you are connecting with the power to protect yourself by lying in wait.

The flip side to this is being vulnerable to your own reactivity when matters of emotional vulnerability are present. Alligators relate to precision and control in all states. Alligator / Crocodile

Floating half submerged by the river bank, the crocodile swims in the murky waters of the unconscious, projecting an image of danger with its jaws and an image of hypocrisy with its tears.

If crocodiles appear and the atmosphere is pleasant in your dream, then they may be a symbol of being comfortable in your own skin. Your unconscious may be reminding you of the importance of timing and focusing your energy so you are ready to seize the moment when it comes.

On the other hand, crocodiles also represent the hazards that may lie beneath the surface of a seemingly harmless situation, so the crocodile may be alerting you to a potential problem and urging you to trust your instincts. When it comes to hunting prey, crocodiles and alligators are masters of disguise, so if they feature in your dream, ask yourself what aspect of yourself you are disguising in real life. Consider also if someone you know is shedding crocodile tears.

If an alligator appears in your dream, it may represent problems that have appeared suddenly as if from nowhere and knocked your sense of balance.

If you’re battling an alligator in your dream, it means you are dealing with an intense situation that has upset your world.... The Element Encyclopedia

You are focusing your thoughts to create more penetrating energy in your life. Light is energy in motion. We generally think of it in terms of that which illuminates and makes things visible. Light

Whether you are dreaming or awake, light is a very positive symbol. It represents enlightenment, lifting of shadow, the acquisition of understanding and knowledge, and a positive force. Depending on the details of the dream, you may give the light spiritual or physical meaning.

For some, the light may represent a higher force or power, God’s presence, or rays of His love and peace. Others may find this dream reassuring as it may represent a well-lit journey through life, or simply a solution to a current problem. Light always refers to consciousness... Light

Light has traditionally been identified with the spirit. It symbolizes knowledge, inspiration, and intuition. For this reason, if your dreams are luminous, it means you possess great self confidence. However, if they are dark, it reveals the presence of feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem. To turn on a light in darkness augurs that you will discover a secret. Finally, you must pay attention to the different forms of light, since the reading depends on it. So, the rainbow represents hope; the sun, happiness; and the moon, the guide that comes from your most hidden unconscious self. (See YELLOW, CLARITY, and LAMP)

The light you see in dreams can have a great spiritual importance. It may deal with a journey toward enlightenment, or an experience in the interior, similar to those the mystics had. In many cases, it has a religious meaning. Christ is often called “the light of the world” and, regarding the Buddha’s nirvana, they say it is “unlimited light.” Equally, the teachings of yoga describe “the light of ten thousand suns.”... Light

Light in general is a symbol for life itself, for the creative force that some people refer to as God or the Divine. Judeo-Christian doctrine tells us that the very first thing that came about in the creation myth was light. Many dreams will express an aspirational spiritual sensibility through the presence of light as a symbol for your connection to this part of the human experience.

If there is a sensation of light in your dream, you may be expressing your own spiritual nature. Light also connects to your ability to see and become consciously aware of things about yourself and in your life. In this way, light may be a symbol of your expanding awareness of things that used to be in the dark and are now coming to light.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

My Dream Interpretation

Light Switch

You are dreaming of your access to creative power and the ability to connect to that power at will with the assumption of success. Turning a switch reflects the need to make a change in some situation. Since most switches have only two positions, the desired effect is likely connected to causing something to start or stop. We go through life with an expectation that our light switches are always going to work, barring any unforeseen circumstances. This implies a level of trust and faith in our ability to bring about the desired effect when this symbol appears in a dream. Light connects to the power to create. Being able to access this energy and turn it on and off is the essence of this symbol. Turning a switch on may point to a need to begin unleashing the creative force within you. Turning one off could mean a need to stop and take a break from some ongoing process. Be equally willing to consider that turning off a light can indicate an unwillingness to look at something as it really is.

A working switch means your sense of control is intact, whereas one that is ineffectual means some area of your life is no longer responding to your demands.

The safety of the switch is also important. Exposed wiring could mean that danger or uncertainty is present when tapping into your creativity.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Lighthouse

You are finally being guided through confusing territory, and while you may not quite know where you are going, you are at least experiencing some emotional safety.

A lighthouse is located on a shoreline and provides perspective in an otherwise concealed landscape. During a fog, the lighthouse emits both a visual and an audio clue to allow travelers to navigate through what would otherwise be dangerous territory. To get to the core of this symbol, we begin with where a lighthouse is located.

The ocean represents the deep emotional unconscious parts of the human psyche. Land is what is conscious and within our awareness.

The shoreline is where these two vastly different landscapes meet. Because they are so very different in nature, the boundary that exists between land and sea can be a strange and sometimes treacherous place. This is true of the shoreline, where the land meets the sea in the real world. In the world of symbolic meaning, these two dichotomous elements of the human condition interact with each other in a dramatic and sometimes violent way.

The lighthouse keeps you safe in this dangerous territory.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Lighting A Fire

If you dreamed of lighting a fire, what sort of fire was it and who else was there? Kindling a fire represents a summoning of energy, so the context of the fire in your dream should always be taken into consideration. Where are you focusing your energy? If the fire spreads out of control in your dream, this may indicate that your emotions are in danger of running out of control too.

If you succeed in controlling the blaze, this suggests you are in control of your waking life. Also pay attention to what was being burned in your dream and what the fire was feeding on, as the other symbols in the dream may help with your interpretation. For example, if you were burning your clothes, is it time to brighten up your image?

A fire burning in a domestic hearth is likely to point to your private life, whilst a bonfire or beacon has more public significance as a symbol of communication. Lighting a stove to cook a meal for family and friends suggests concern for your loved ones, and lighting a candle for a meal or curling up in front of a log cabin’s roaring fire may suggest sexual heat.... Psychological / emotional perspective: When we dream of lightning we are marking a discharge of tension in some way. There may be a situation in our everyday lives that actually needs to be ‘blasted’ – apparently negatively – in order for something to happen which will change the circumstances.

Material aspects: Lightning in a dream denotes unexpected changes, which are taking place or are about to take place. This may be the sudden realization of a personal truth, or of a more universal awareness. Often such a revelation has the effect of knocking down the structures we have built in as safeguards in our lives. Alternatively, we may have to make changes in the way we think while leaving our everyday structure and relationships in place. Lightning can also indicate strong passion – such as love – which may strike suddenly but be devastating in its effect. Lightning

(1) Lightning may be a sexual symbol. Compare the mythological image of the sky-god impregnating the earth-goddess with a flash of lightning. On the other hand, lightning striking the earth may represent consciousness penetrating the unconscious - in which case your dream is probably urging you to explore the hidden parts of yourself.

(2) It may symbolize a ‘flash’ of insight or inspiration.

(3) It may symbolize punishment: ‘the wrath of the gods’.

If so, you may have a guilt-complex that needs sorting out. However, not all guilt-feelings are neurotic; your dream may be telling you you have done something wrong.

If lightning strikes you, or something that may symbolize you (e.g. a house), the dream message may be either that you need to demolish your current self-image in favour of one that corresponds more closely to your true self or that your current lifestyle or pattern of behaviour is threatening your true self.... Lightning

Symbolizes creative and destructive strength of the divine. It indicates a potent flux of energy that could be beneficial if linked to water, or devastating if it strikes someone in its path. The image of lightning is associated with that of the storm, the violent force of rain and wind that parallely destroy, impregnate, and purify. It manifests a difficult and turbulent moment that overcomes the calm.

It is possible that you have been surprised by the circumstances. On the other hand, lightning can destroy, but it can also show its great brilliance and illumination. In this case, it could represent the ideas and inspiration that you have. Also, lightning suggests that that forces that control your life will be under your control.

Even in the most ancient mythological stories gods of thunder and lightning appeared.

It is believed that their origin is the divinities of the neolithic man. Like many other prominent symbols from archaic myths, lightning possesses sexual connotations. When lightning fills the sky, it represents Mother Earth being impregnated by the gods of the sky.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Lightning

You are being inspired by sudden awareness or enlightenment born of divergent, confronting ideas. Consider how lightning is formed. Thick clouds contain both positive and negative charges.

The positive charges gather on the top of the clouds and the negative charges drop to the bottom. When they are thrust together by the right weather conditions, the reaction of opposites explodes in an electrical charge of great violence. Therefore, lightning represents the flashes of brilliant awareness that come when polar- opposite views come crashing together. These contradictory views should actually cancel each other out. However, what actually happens is that they reveal a brand-new viewpoint that would otherwise have not been knowable. How you experience the lightning in your dream is key to your interpretation.

If it is harmful or feels dangerous, then your dream is reflecting shadow material. This could be anything that might inspire the kind of fear that comes from gaining knowledge or information; as the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. Look to where you are being guided to choose a path that you are resisting even though you may know it is your highest choice.

If you are delighted by the beauty of the lightning, then your unconscious may be expressing gratitude for the sudden new awareness that is present or right over the horizon.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Lightning / Storm / Thunder

Hearing thunder in a dream can warn of a potential emotional outburst.

If the thunder is in the distance, there may still be time to regain control of a difficult situation. Spiritually, the rumblings of thunder can demonstrate deep anger.

Because lightning has long been considered the prerogative of the gods and a symbol of communication between the world of gods and that of human beings, if lightning appears in your dream or you are struck by a thunderbolt, this suggests intuition, inspiration and the sudden awakening of psychic powers. In general, lightning in a dream indicates unexpected changes that are taking place, or are about to take place. These changes may be to your routine or to the way you think.

Lightning can also indicate strong, passionate love that can strike suddenly and unexpectedly. Alternatively, lightning in a dream can indicate a discharge of tension, or a necessary but destructive act on your part in order to make progress. Spiritually, lightning can denote sudden enlightenment or personal growth.

If a storm—with or without thunder and lightning—appears in your dream, this indicates personal emotional outbursts as the storm allows the dreamer to release emotion and clear the air. But if the storm is approaching, this indicates a sense of difficult times ahead, and of anger or passion about someone or something that has built up, but which has not yet been expressed.... Link To Enlightenment

Throughout our existence we are striving to integrate levels of consciousness within us, for then we will know no limits in awareness. A dream helps us begin to bridge these levels: the conscious, subconscious and superconscious minds. The conscious mind perceives space-time reality through the five senses and is the rational or intellectual level. The subconscious is like a storage bank which contains all experiences in this lifetime, both in and out of the body. The superconscious goes way beyond. It is like the God-self, or higher consciousness, that is totally detached and watches what is going on. It understands completely the life purpose and soul mission. It is from this level we are able to get in tune with our whole life plan. Dreams are your direct link to God, higher self or guidance. Although all knowledge is available to us, we cannot have instant enlightenment. We must be able to stay grounded and utilize information as it is given, incorporating it into our lives before going on to the next step. My guidance has explained: "There is no instant enlightenment. You want to be very sure that you are grounded as you are opening up to higher levels of awareness. By getting insight through dreams and applying it in your daily life, you begin to integrate understanding. You realize that you are completely responsible for your own life and have no right to inflict your will upon another. As your insight expands, you earn the right to move on to the next level. If all were instantly given to you, you would not know how to use such power and knowledge."... Dreampedia

Major Religions And Dream Interpretation

Buddhism and dreams
The principle aim of Buddhism is to achieve liberation from the things that bind consciousness to what Buddhists see as the illusory concepts of the self and the world. This principle or goal is called liberation or Nirvana, and it is sometimes associated with the obliteration of a sense of self or ego. This is not the death of the self but an untangling of the self from the illusions that emotions and thoughts create. Dreams are therefore thought to depict the illusions of the everyday experience of life in that they express a person’s fears, hopes and opinions.

Christianity and dreams
According to traditional Christianity, the purpose of dreams is to improve communication with God; this can be shown by the constant references in the Bible to communication through the medium of dreams between man and God, man and the angels, and between man and his higher self. The moral standards of the dreamer may be reflected in the clarity and degree of quality of their dreams.

Hinduism and dreams
Hindu dream interpretation puts great importance on individual dream images, and relates them to gods and demons. This belief that dream symbols may be universal as well as individual is similar to the more modern ideas put forward by Carl Jung in his theory of the ’collective unconscious’.

Islam and dreams
Dreams, according to Muslim scholars, are of three types. The first of these are sound dreams that are indicative of glad tidings. These can include premonitions of the future. A second type of dream is said to be evil and the result of Satanic whisperings or inspirations. A third type of dream can be termed as ’idle dreams’, and they are the result of eating unpalatable foods, the over-exercise of one’s imaginations, or experiences in life which might also be reflected in one’s dreams.

Judaism and dreams
Dreams have long been considered a legitimate form of divine revelation in Jewish mysticism and throughout Jewish history—from Hagar, Joseph and King Solomon to Sigmund Freud and beyond— Jews have honored their dreams and searched for their deeper meanings. Judaism takes dreams very seriously. In the Bible, we read of the dreams of the great people of Israel: Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and many of the prophets. Judaism is of the opinion that all prophecy, except for the prophecy of Moses, was transmitted to the prophets when they were in a dreamlike, almost catatonic, trance. The Talmud places heavy emphasis on the interpretation of the dream as the key to its fulfillment.

If a seemingly bad or frightening dream is interpreted positively, no ill effects from that dream will ever actually occur.

Other traditions and dreams
Oriental traditions concerning dreams are comparative and philosophical; the dreamer’s state of mind is thought to be of more importance than the predictive power of the dreams themselves.

Ancient Chinese philosophy holds that the soul is separated from the body whilst dreaming and that several levels of consciousness exist; the dreamer’s horoscope, time of year, and the individual’s physical condition are all taken into consideration when interpreting dreams.... Mirror / Lighting

As a symbol of the mind, the mirror suggests the art of reflection, looking at the reality of who you are, or seeing yourself in a new or different way.

If a mirror appears in your dream, do you need to reflect on something that is bothering you? If you saw your reflection, were you happy with what you saw or do you want to make changes? Light in dreams symbolizes intuition or inner guidance, so if you dream of lights or light bulbs, consider their shape. Are they candles flaring upward or is the light contained in a bulb? Is the light flickering or steady, and what does this represent for you right now? If you are carrying a light that flares in your dream, does this mean you have a flair for something, a talent you are not using? Or does it mean you are about to flare up and have an angry outburst? As mentioned above, light is the symbol of life, knowledge and enlightenment and in dreams, casting a bright light may present an optimistic image of your well-being, but if it is flickering, this suggests uncertainty. A light that is unlit may be a symbol of ignorance.

If you use a flashlight or torch in your dream, this suggests you are trying to seek out truth and integrity in a corrupt situation.... The Element Encyclopedia

Moon (moonlight)

Any dream with the moon or moonlight in it relates to the feminine aspect of the life force energy.

The moon is a very powerful symbol, just as it is an enormous energetic force in our daily life on Earth. As the heavenly counterpart to the masculine energy of the sun, the moon represents the feminine aspects of life.

The primary essence of the moon is its constant changeability. In this regard, the moon symbolizes the ephemeral quality of life and all of the different cycles that human beings experience.

If the moon plays a prominent role in your dream, your interpretation should begin with the notion that change is afoot.

A distinction should be made about how the moon appears in your dream.

If the moon itself is visible to you in the skyscape of your dream, then you are looking at the source of emotional power.

If your dream illuminates the light of the moon itself as it falls upon Earth, then you are dreaming of the effect or impact of the moon’s magic.

If your dream actually takes place on the moon, then you are literally visiting the seat of your unconscious directly; such a dream should be considered as a very deliberate snapshot of your current experience of how the invisible side of life is impacting the visible.

The emotional side of life is represented by the moon. This includes all that is changeable and all that responds to the ebb and flow of life. Because of its unquestionable universality to the human race, the moon in dreams should be considered with very broad strokes of interpretation.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Religion

If you dream of discussing religion and feel religiously inclined, you will find much to mar the calmness of your life, and business will turn a disagreeable front to you.

If a young woman imagines that she is over religious, she will disgust her lover with her efforts to act ingenuous innocence and goodness.

If she is irreligious and not a transgressor, it foretells that she will have that independent frankness and kind consideration for others, which wins for women profound respect, and love from the opposite sex as well as her own; but if she is a transgressor in the eyes of religion, she will find that there are moral laws, which, if disregarded, will place her outside the pale of honest recognition. She should look well after her conduct.

If she weeps over religion, she will be disappointed in the desires of her heart.

If she is defiant, but innocent of offence, she will shoulder burdens bravely, and stand firm against deceitful admonitions.

If you are self-reproached in the midst of a religious excitement, you will find that you will be almost induced to give up your own personality to please some one whom you hold in reverent esteem.

To see religion declining in power, denotes that your life will be more in harmony with creation than formerly. Your prejudices will not be so aggressive.

To dream that a minister in a social way tells you that he has given up his work, foretells that you will be the recipient of unexpected tidings of a favorable nature, but if in a professional and warning way, it foretells that you will be overtaken in your deceitful intriguing, or other disappointments will follow.

(These dreams are sometimes fulfilled literally in actual life. When this is so, they may have no symbolical meaning. Religion is thrown around men to protect them from vice, so when they propose secretly in their minds to ignore its teachings, they are likely to see a minister or some place of church worship in a dream as a warning against their contemplated action.

If they live pure and correct lives as indicated by the church, they will see little of the solemnity of the church or preachers.) ... Ten Thousand Dream Interpretation

Religion

If you have a dream that features religious or spiritual imagery, it is essential to take your own beliefs into consideration.

If a figure or image of your own personal faith appears in your dream, the most likely interpretation is that your dreaming mind is reminding you of the importance your faith plays in your life; it may also be urging you to make decisions in accordance with your beliefs. If, however, you dream of an aspect of a belief system that is not yours, the meaning is less obvious; the key to its interpretation lies in what the figure or image means to you in waking life. For example, if you associate Christ with humility and self-sacrifice, your dreaming mind may be suggesting that you need to make some kind of personal sacrifice.

Dreams that feature a strong religious factor do not only occur to those who practice a faith. Indeed Jung said that many of his patients who had such dreams had lost their faith and their dreams were referring to their sense of guilt and loss. When an individual neglects the spiritual in waking life, dreams may try to compensate with images that highlight the existence of an inner truth.

It is impossible to include here all the symbols of all religions, but many of the symbols mentioned in this chapter can be applied to other faiths. See also MIND, BODY, SPIRIT; SURREALISM AND FANTASY; SYMBOLS.... The Element Encyclopedia

Religion And Dreams

In most ancient cultures, consideration and even veneration of dreams played a great pan. Some groups felt that dream life was more real and imponant than waking life. Not only were dreams looked to for information about hunting (Eskimo groups), but also for ways of healing physical and psychological ills (Greek dream temples) and insights into the medicinal properties of herbs, barks and clays (African tribal witchdoctors). Common to most of these groups, and evident in the Old Testament, was also the sense that through dreams one had awareness of the transcendental or supersensible. St Peter’s dream of the sheet and unclean animals was a turning point in the history of western socicty —as was Constantine’s dream of his victory if he used the symbol of Christianity.

At its most fundamental, the human religious sense emerges out of several factors. One is the awareness of existing amidst external and internal forces of nature which cause us to feel vulnerable and perhaps powerless. Such natural processes as illness, death, growth and decay, earthquakes, the seasons, confront us with things which are often beyond our ability to control. Considenng the information and resources of the times, one of religion’s main functions in the past was the attempted control of the ‘uncertain’ factors in human life, and help towards psychological adjustment to valine rability. Religions were the first social programmes aiding the human need for help and support towards emotional, mental, physical and social health and maturity. Even if primitive, such programmes helped groups of people to gain a common identity and live in reasonable harmony together. Like a computer program which is specific to a particular business, such programmes were specific to a particular group, and so are outdated in today’s need for greater integration with other races. Religions also offered some sort of concept of and connection with the roots of being.

Example: ‘For two nights running I have dreamt the same nightmare. I am in a chapel walking down the first flight of several flights of steps when I hear loud noises behind me. I am told to run, being warned of the soldiers who ride the cavalry horses nght down the steps, and who run you over if you are in their way.

The horses are fierce and they absolutely race down the steps at the same time every day, and you literally have to lock yourself away in a nearby room which is a long way down the chapel. I ran into the room hearing the pounding of the horses’ hooves. It was a terrible pandemonium in that chapel. In the room were school children the same age as me and some perhaps younger’ (Maria H). Maria, who is 16, in describing her dream says she had recently been confronted with whether to have a sexual relationship with her boyfriend. Religion, represented by the chapel, is Maria’s way of locking out her powerful sexual urges. Many dreams show that religion, as a set of beliefs, is used as a way of avoiding anxiety in the face of life’s uncertainties.

For many people, the rigid belief system helps them to avoid uncertainty in making decisions.

Dreams also portray and define the aspect of human experience in which we sense a kinship with all life forms. This is the side of spiritual expenence through which we find a connection with the roots of our being. While awake we might see the birth of a colt and feel the wonder of emergence and newness; the struggle to stand up and survive, the miracle of physical and sexual power which can be accepted or feared. In looking in the faces of fellow men and women we see something of what they have done in this strange and painful wonder we call life. We see whether they have been crushed by the forces confronting them; whether they have become ngid; or whether, through some common miracle, they have been able to carry into their mature years the laughter, the crying, the joy, the ability to feel pain, that are the very signs of life within the human soul. These things are sensed by us all, but seldom organised into a comprehensive view of life, and an extraction of meaning. Often it is only in our dreams, through the ability the unconscious has to draw out the significance of such widely divergent expenences, that we glimpse the unity behind phenomena which is an essential of spiritual life, i.e. we all have a life, we breathe, we have come from a mother, so share a universal experience.

Example: To quote J.B. Priestley from his book Rain Upon Godshill: ‘Just before I went to Amenca, dunng the exhausting weeks when I was busy with my Time Plays, I had such a dream, and I think it left a greater impression on my mind than any experience I had ever known before, awake or in dreams, and said more to me about this life than any book I have ever read.

The setting of the dream was quite simple, and owed something to the fact that not long before my wife had visiied the lighthouse here at St Catherine’s to do some bird ringing. I dreamt I was standing at the top of a very high tower, alone, looking down upon myriads of birds all flying in one direction; every kind of bird was there, all the birds in the world. It was a noble sight, this vast aerial river of birds. But now in some mysterious fashion the gear was changed, and time speeded up, so that I saw generations of birds, watched them break their shells, flutter into life, mate, weaken, falter and die. Wings grew only to crumble; bodies were sleek, and then, in a flash bled and shrivelled; and death struck everywhere at every second. What was the use of all this blind struggle towards life, this eager trying of wings, this hurried mating, this flight and surge, all this gigantic meaningless effort? As I stared down, seeming to see every creature’s ignoble little history almost at a glance, I felt sick at heart. It would be better if not one of them, if not one of us, had been bom, if the struggle ceased for ever. I stood on my tower, still alone, desperately unhappy. But now the gear was changed again, and the time went faster still, and it was rushing by at such a rate, that the birds could not show any movement, but were like an enormous plain sown with feathers. But along this plain, flickering through the bodies themselves, there now passed a sort of white flame, trembling, dancing, then hurrying on; and as soon as I saw it I knew that this white flame was life itself, the very quintessence of being; and then it came to me, in a rocket burst of ecstasy, that nothing mattered, nothing could ever matter, because nothing else was real but this quivering and hurrying lambency of being. Birds, men and creatures not yet shaped and coloured, all were of no account except so far as this flame of life travelled through them. It left nothing to mourn over behind it, what I had thought was tragedy was mere emptiness or a shadow show; for now all real feeling was caught and purified and danced on ecstatically with the white flame of life. I had never before felt such deep happiness as I knew at the end of my dream of the tower and the birds.’

Some Nonh American Indians developed the totem out of similar processes. In one generation a person might learn to plant a seed and eat the results. Later someone might see that through fertilisation more food was produced. Still later someone found that by irrigating, still more improvement was made. No one individual was responsible for such vital cultural information, and the collective information is bigger than any one person, yet individuals can partake of it and add to it.

The totem represented such subtle realities, as it might in a modem dream; as Christ might in today’s unconscious. That older cultures venerated their collective information, and that modem humans seem largely apathetic to it, shows how our ‘religion’ has degenerated. Yet utilising the power of the unconscious to portray the subtle influences which impinge upon us, and building the information gained into our response to life, is deeply important.

With the growth of authoritarian structures in western religion, and the dominance of the rational mind over feeling values, dreams have been pushed into the background. With this change has developed the sense that visionary dreams were something which ‘superstitious* cultural groups had in the past. Yet thoroughly modem men and women still meet Christ powerfully in dreams and visions. Christ still appears to them as a living being.

The transcendental, the collective or universal enters their life just as frequently as ever before. Sometimes it enters with insistence and power, because a too rational mind has led to an unbalance in the psyche—a balance in which the waking and rational individuality is one pole, and the feeling, connective awareness of the unconscious is the other.

Although it is tempting to think of the transcendent as ethereal or unreal, the religious in dreams is nearly always a symbol for the major processes of maturing in human life. We are the hero/ine who meets the dangers of life outside the womb, who faces growth, ageing and death.

The awe and deep emotions we unconsciously feel about such heroic deeds are depicted by religious emotion.

Religions

(see Altai; Church, Monastery, Sanctuary, Sacrifice, Temple)

If the religion depicted is the one you currently practice, this dream reveals your feelings toward that faith, its tenets, and your activities within that organization.

The subconscious or Higher Self expressing a need to reconnect with sacred powers and spiritual ideals.

Different religions appearing in dreams may stem from your exposure to recent articles or documentaries on the subject.

If this is the case, consider this part of the dream situational.

Each faith has a slightly different focus, which may reflect heavily on your current situation.

For example, Buddhism is highly introspective and philosophical, which might reflect too much brooding on your part, or perhaps not enough, depending on the other dream images.... The Language of Dreams

Religious Building

Any religious building suggests a refuge where you can gather your thoughts and consider your beliefs. Even if you are not religious, in dreams religious buildings highlight your spiritual, peace-loving and idealistic potential. Most of us have principles we live by and these may surface in your dreams in the symbol of a religious building.

If you are walking past a church or religious building in your dream, this suggests that you are not making contact with the best part of yourself. Is your waking life so crammed with obligations that you don’t have time to explore your inner world for some much-needed reflection, meditation and contemplation? If you entered a temple in your dream and immediately felt enveloped in a sense of calm, was your unconscious suggesting that you would enjoy better health if you treated your body as a temple, putting your physical, emotional and spiritual welfare first? Dreams about religious buildings may also be an expression of anger against dogma; again it depends on the feelings evoked by the building in your dream. Did you feel relieved or tense? If a vault features in your dream, it may represent your highest spiritual ideals, as vaults often appear in churches or temples with painted stars in imitation of the vault of the heavens. A vault may also recall a crypt or burial chamber, and as such, it may conjure up thoughts of death. See also RELIGION.... The Element Encyclopedia

Religious Buildings

(Such as a church, mosque or temple) as an environment for us to consider our system of belief, any religious building will suggest a place of sanctuary and refuge and a place where we can be closer to whatever concept we have of the divine or ultimate power. Although we may not consciously adhere to any particular religion, most of us have principles by which we live, which will surface in dreams in recognisable images. Religious Icon

If the icon featured a portrait of a saint or other religious figure, find out what tradition is associated with that person.

For example, if the saint was St. Christopher, then you may be on your way to taking a long journey.

If the saint was St. Jude, something wonderful and totally unexpected will happen.

If the portrait was of the Virgin Mary, someone will intercede for you in a disagreement and put it to an end.

Icons in general seem to bring a message that coming changes in your life, however stressful they may be, are beneficial and can be dealt with fairly easily.... Dream Explanations of Astro Center

Religious Imagery

1- Dreams have a way of introducing or rather reintroducing us to truths which we have long known to be.

If spirituality is taken to be an inner truth, and religion as that which links us back to source, then it must be the case that religious imagery partly assists in that function of recognition. Using images that cannot be interpreted successfully in any other way reinforces the idea of spirituality being something separate in us. Because the images are so specific they may be startling.

2- When the individual, through deliberate or spontaneous neglect, denies himself access to the store of religious imagery in waking life, dreams will often react to this lack and try to compensate by jolting the dreamer back into an awareness of his inner spirit. In today’s society it is very easy to fasten on the hypocritical aspects of religion and to acccpt that hypocrisy.

It is also easy to make the assumption that the outward forms of religion often deny the existence of a true inner reality. This rejection can be valid, since it is not until the individual accepts responsibility for his own existence that true spirituality emerges.

If spirituality the inner truth that we all hold is neglected, it will not go away: it will simply reappear in its negative and terrifying form. In waking life the closest image we have to that is the Devil (see Devil), or the more vengeful Indian gods. Our own personalised demons can be more frightening than those.

3- If we are prepared to accept that each truth will have its own personal slant, and that we must get back to the basic truth, all dreams can be interpreted from a spiritual point of view. This is especially true of religious imagery. Most interpretations have had to be stated in general terms and are given here only as guidelines. When the reader can throw away the book and say that the interpretations are not valid, then he will have taken on personal responsibility.

Angel In spiritual terms the angel symbolises pure being and freedom from earthly matters.

Angels tend to be androgynous, and arc not recognised either as male or female. There is a hierarchy of angels; 1) Angels (the realm closest to the physical), 2) Cherubim and 3) Seraphim. As more people are seeking spirituality; there are those who have become more aware of the angel form, particularly in dreams.

It is vital that the dreamer is able to differentiate between the personalised aspect of the Higher Self, and the angelic form, since they arc similar but different. Dark angels are reputed to be those angelic beings who have not yet totally rejected the ego or earthly passions. When this image appears in a dream, we are being alerted to a spiritual transgression, which often has already happened. Warning angels usually symbolise what should not be clone. Buddha (also see individual entry) The figure of Buddha appearing in dreams highlights the necessity to be aware of the Qualities of Being which Buddha taught. It links us to the power of renunciation and of suffering, but in the sense that experience of suffering is valid. Ceremony/Ritual (also see individual entries) Ceremony and ritual are all part of the heightening of awareness which occurs on the path to spirituality. In dream ceremony the images are even more vivid.

Christ appearing in dreams epitomises the recognition of the ability to reconcile the physical and the spiritual, God and Man. He personifies Perfect Man, a state to which we all aspire. Appearing on the cross he signifies redemption through suffering. We do not need to be crucified physically to suffer.

The ideal Christ is that part of ourselves which is prepared to take on our portion of the sufferings in the world by- working within the world.

The anarchic Christ is the part of us whose love and lust for life permit us to break through all known barriers.

The Cosmic Christ is the part that is prepared to take on Cosmic Responsibility that is, to be connected with the Universal Truth. While these aspects have been spoken of in Christian terms, obviously they- are also present in all religious figures. Church, chapel, temple (also see Church Buildings) We all are aware of our need for sanctuary from the batterings of the everyday world. Within the church we / are free to form a relationship with our own personal God. In dreams we may also have the realisation that our body is our temple. Church or Religious Music These sounds, dedicated to the perception of God that one has. are sacred sounds and are a way of expanding the spirit. Crucifixion images in a dream link with the human being’s need to sacrifice himself through passion and through pain. Devil (also see individual entry) In dreams the Devil represents temptation. This often arises from the repressed sexual drives which demand attention. It may also signify the Shadow (see Introduction). Ghosts (also see individual entry) Independent forces within, which arc separate from the individual’s will. It will depend on the dreamer’s belief as to whether lie accepts the appearance of ghosts as psychological or spiritual apparitions. Gods/Goddesses (also see individual entries) We are each given the opportunity to make real our fullest potential. In doing so, we must undertake an exploration and possibly a confrontation of our perception of gods and goddesses.

Hell is a state of being where nothing is ever as it seems and could be thought of as continually existing in a state of negative illusion. Reputedly it is a state of Spiritual Agony where one’s worst dreams are fulfilled. Heaven is a state of being where the energy is of such a high frequency that there is no suffering. In dreams it appears when the individual is transmuting his awareness into dimensions other than the physical.

It is reputedly a placc where bliss exists.

It is also known as Nirvana and Samadhi. Holy Communion The belief that Christ’s body was transmuted into heavenly food symbolised by the Last Supper appears in dreams as the intake of spiritual food. Holy Communion represents a sacred sharing. Icon (also see individual entry) An icon is a representation of a religious figure or concept. It can, through usage, become revered as a holy object in its own right. Incense (also see individual entry) Incense is an offering to the gods and a physical form of prayer through perfume and smoke. Initiation takes place when some barrier is transcended to enable us to have access to other ways of being.

Mary, the Mother of God/Virgin Mother flic symbolism of Mary, both as the maiden and as the mother, is a potent one. She epitomises all that is woman, and all that is holy Moses often appears in dreams as the holy figure who will lead us out of difficulty.

Old and New Testaments or all religious books A resource and a repository for knowledge is available in dream imagary this will often appear as books. Priest/Prophet A conflict between the present and the future.

A Religious Service is the act of worship which is used to bring people together.

It is recognised in dreams, perhaps as an act of integration of the whole self, and as an illustration that the whole is greater than the parts. Third Eye This is the developed clairvoyant perceptiveness that comes with spiritual development.

It is the Third Eye of Buddha and symbolises unity and balance. In no case does it represent a physical quality, though it is thought to link with the pineal gland.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

Rituals And Religious Ceremonies

Each of the symbols that appear in a religious dream should be taken into account as each will contribute in some way to its meaning. Their significance is likely to accord with your religious faith but whether you are religious or not, the interpretation tends to be similar.

If you were reading, hearing, singing or chanting from a religious book, manuscript, sacred scripture or text such as the Bible or Koran, your dreaming mind is highlighting your desire to know the truth or the answer to a question that is on your mind. You may feel the need for some kind of guidance and your dreaming mind is urging you to pay attention to the problem or issue on your mind before it gets any worse. Dreams about praying also reflect a feeling of helplessness and the need for guidance in waking life.

If you attended a religious ceremony or rite or were part of a congregation in your dream, your feelings about this are crucial.

If you felt uplifted and comforted, this suggests that you feel at peace with your moral code; but if your attitude was one of rebellion or anger, your dreaming mind may be urging you to assert your individuality, as you are currently being stifled by the restrictions of your belief system. Alternatively, if you are not allowed to participate in your dream ritual, you may be harboring feelings of guilt because you have broken some important rules. As ceremonies are used to attain deeper awareness and to establish a new order, another interpretation suggests that dream ceremonies and rituals refer to major life changes or new attitudes in your waking life that are having a profound effect on you. Religious processions and carnivals in dreams reflect a need to stimulate your imagination and perhaps increase your faith

A dream of visiting a religious place may be commenting on the lack of spirituality in your life; this is especially so if the church, mosque, chapel, temple, cathedral or religious site was peaceful and calming, as it suggests that you need to seek out a place where you can feel secure and reflect on your waking life.

If you dreamed of a crypt or religious burial ground, this may be suggesting that your spiritual self is buried.

If the religious site or building was in ruins, you need to consider which aspect of your spiritual life is crumbling away.

If you heard church bells or religious music in your dream, this suggests a desire to expand your spirit

A dream that features baptism or an initiation of some kind suggests spiritual renewal or a new life for the dreamer.

If you were baptized and given a new name, this indicates a new start; the significance of that name will be important.

If you attended the baptism of a baby, this may represent an idea or project you are working on and for which you need approval.

If you were blessed in your dream, this suggests approval of some kind of action or attitude in your waking life. Blasphemy, on the other hand, reflects irreverence or insults of some kind in your waking life.

If you dream of taking Holy Communion, because in real life this is a form of blessing for forgiveness and renewal, in dreams it represents sacred sharing.

If bread and wine appears in your dream, these refer to the basic needs in your life. As always, your feelings in the dream are important. Did you feel comforted or anxious? If you dream of a crusade, this suggests that you need to fight for or against something or someone in your waking life. See also GATHERINGS.... The Element Encyclopedia

Rope

General Meaning: Rope, like chain, speaks of bondage and of being restricted. In a positive context though, it is a picture of strength and security.

(As in the threefold cord that cannot be broken) • Positive: To dream of being tied to your spouse or to someone you love speaks of unity with the Lord.

• A ship is tied to the dock with a rope, representing security.

• A threefold cord speaks of strength and unity. It can be a very positive thing if it is tying a couple together in marriage.

• I recall a vision when my husband Craig and I were receiving ministry about being married. Apostle Les saw a vision of us tied together with strong ropes that could not be broken.

• Because my parents had been divorced, I feared the same thing in my own life.

The Lord made me a strong promise that I had nothing to fear. I am glad to say that our marriage is going stronger than ever! • With my husband, myself and the Lord, we are a picture of a threefold cord that could not be broken.

• Ecclesiastes 4:12 And if a one is overwhelmed, two can stand together; a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Negative: To dream of having your hands tied is a picture of being restricted and unable to do the things you need to do.

• Being tied by rope to something could also indicate that you are being bound by whatever that object or person represents in your dreams.

• Being bound by a rope can speak of the work of the enemy to bind you and prevent you from doing what the Lord wants you to do, just like Delilah bound Samson.

• Judges 15:13 ...And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

• A rope attaching you to someone else could speak of a spiritual bond that needs to be broken. In the spirit, you might see a person tied with cords that are in turn attached to various people.

• If the people you see are family members, then that rope is a picture of generational bondage.

• You can also see this in relation to past mentors or friends that you have not fully let go yet.

If you see this vision, then the Lord is telling you to let those people go and to move on.

If you climb one, you will overcome enemies who are working to injure you.

To decend{sic} a rope, brings disappointment to your most sanguine moments.

If you are tied with them, you are likely to yield to love contrary to your judgment.

To break them, signifies your ability to overcome enmity and competition.

To tie ropes, or horses, denotes that you will have power to control others as you may wish.

To walk a rope, signifies that you will engage in some hazardous speculation, but will surprisingly succeed.

To see others walking a rope, you will benefit by the fortunate ventures of others.

To jump a rope, foretells that you will startle your associates with a thrilling escapade bordering upon the sensational.

To jump rope with children, shows that you are selfish and overbearing; failing to see that children owe very little duty to inhuman parents.

To catch a rope with the foot, denotes that under cheerful conditions you will be benevolent and tender in your administrations.

To dream that you let a rope down from an upper window to people below, thinking the proprietors would be adverse to receiving them into the hotel, denotes that you will engage in some affair which will not look exactly proper to your friends, but the same will afford you pleasure and interest.

For a young woman, this dream is indicative of pleasures which do not bear the stamp of propriety. ... Ten Thousand Dream Interpretation

Storm / Thunder / Lightning

Storms suggest emotional eruptions but, because storms often blow out over the course of a dream, they also suggest that your emotional crisis will eventually calm down. A dream storm may also represent a brainstorm or the unleashing of creativity, especially if bolts of lightning figured. The flashes of lightning could represent flashes of insight but they could also be associated with anger issuing from an authority figure (bolts of lightning were associated with the wrath of the gods, according to ancient peoples). An object or person appearing in a dream that features thunder may therefore represent someone you are planning to oppose in waking life or may suggest an aspect of yourself with which you feel uncomfortable.

If the latter is the case, the thunder may be the voice of your own conscience or an authority figure such as a parent or teacher or boss at work. Try to work out what the thunder was saying; it is a strong image and the advice may be equally impressive.

Finally, were you personally involved during the storm or did you fear for the safety of someone else? If you were worried about someone else, it may be that you fear the consequences of your actions on other people. And if your house or any other building was under threat from the storm, you should consider the dream from the point of view of that which was under threat.... The Element Encyclopedia

Twisting A Rope

(Splice; Entwine; Twine) To splice a rope or a thread, or to twist a rope around oneself, or to whorl it around a spindle, or to make a bobbin in a dream means undertaking a journey.

If it comes out thin in the dream, then the outcome of one’s journey is meager.

If the rope comes out thick and strong in the dream, it means that the outcome of one’s journey is beneficial.

If the twisting of the rope or the thread is easy in the dream, it means that one’s endeavor is free from constraint.

If one sees himself plucking the hair of his beard and twisting it like a rope in a dream, it means that he will receive a bribe to make a false testimony in court. Walking / Running / Cycling

In general, activities such as walking, running and cycling are self-sufficient, pro-active and personal modes of progression, owing their movement entirely to will and physical effort. A possible Gestalt interpretation would be to regard dreams of walking, running or cycling as projections of the dreamer’s developing independence and autonomy. Your competence within your dream activity depicts your emotional stage.

If you are agile, this suggests you are coping well.

If movements flow, you feel in harmony with your emotions and your sexuality. If, however, you get stuck, feel stiff and cannot move easily, this could indicate that your personal development is held back by anxieties and fears. To dream you are walking is probably a comment on the pace of your waking life, and how well you are coping with all your responsibilities.

If you are walking confidently, it could indicate that you are in control and taking things in your stride. Consider your destination. Do you know what it is?

To dream that you are walking at night signifies discontent.

If you are limping, this refers to a lack of balance in some area in your life. Perhaps you feel that you are giving more than you are getting back at work, or in a particular relationship. To dream that you are marching suggests teamwork, or the need to involve yourself more with other people in order to achieve results.

If you were running or racing and keeping up with the others, this is a positive sign, but if you were falling behind or trying and failing to win a race, you need to rethink your schedule in daily life to relieve some of the pressures on you.

When specific activities appear in a dream, you might also need to consider whether or not you are filling your waking hours with productive and positive activities. It may be that changes need to be made. For example, if you dream of running, this could simply indicate your need to exercise more. Alternatively, it could suggest that you are exercising too much, and need to get balance back into your life.
