Four

A symbol of wholeness, according to Jung.

The four seasons, the phases of the moon, the four directions on a compass, particularly also the four elements—fire, air, earth, and water—the four limbs, the four functions of the conscience. Four creates order in chaos.

It is the symbol for becoming whole and becoming one, in contrast to Multiplicity.

For some Native Americans four is a holy number, the number for everything beautiful (for instance, in some traditions a prayer must be spoken four times). In alchemy the process of transformation happens in four stages. According to legend, the river in paradise separates into four rivers.

According to Jung, four always points out that we are on the way to becoming what we really are. Four symbolizes completeness and totality: the four temperaments and, in Christianity, the four directions of the Cross and Christ surrounded by four apostles.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

Four

Four in a dream is usually a positive symbol. There are Four earth elements, Four seasons, and Four psychological functions in the human system.

The Four is where the change in the human personality takes place.

The number Four belongs to Uranus. Four-people want to revolutionize the world: they are scientists, clerics, social reformers, nonconformists, and artists. They brood, attack problems, and have a quick wit. Four analyv.es and organizes. It stands against the carefree mentality of the Three—having received the Divine one. Four-people have the clarity needed to understand the center, the “I,” and what holds life together. But a Four-person can also suffocate in this orderliness. Four-people have staying- power and willpower, as well as a tendency to be melancholy.

Generally speaking, the Four represents immense inner strength, energy, vitality, and a great love for and connection with nature. You are asked to either support and advance these qualities, or you need them in greater measure in order to fulfill your life’s work. See Uranus.

Four

(see also Mandalas)

Four is an ancient symbol of completeness; wholeness. (The four comers of the earth, the four cardinal points, the four winds all, in primitive traditions, represent the whole of reality. So does a four-sided figure. The cross, too, extending in all four directions, is an ancient - pre-Christian - symbol of totality. Such figures, along with a four- petalled flower or four-lobed leaf, are mandalas, representing wholeness.)

According to Jung, consciousness has four functions: thinking, intuition, feeling and sensation. Usually, however, at least one of these and possibly three are undeveloped and are therefore still totally or partially unconscious. Personal fullness can be achieved only by lifting these functions out of unconsciousness and integrating them into consciousness.

Multiples of four - eight, sixteen and so on - may have the same symbolic meaning as four. To see such a symbol in your dream does not mean you have achieved personal wholeness; rather, your dream may be pointing out, by contrast, your lack of wholeness.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Four

When you add a fourth point to a triangle, you end up with a square. Four is the number of structure. Once the creative impulse has been satisfied, it is time for solidification, which can be accomplished by the power of four.

A wonderful weight-bearing shape, a square is what allows for building the foundation on which the creative energies of three can be supported. Four connects to the establishment of institutions, order, rules, and regulations. While a number of great strength, it can engender a sense of limitation and the concept of restraint.... Four

Four denotes stability, physical limitations, inadaptability, hard labor and earthly things, as in the four corners of the earth. It also stands for materialistic matters, practicality, responsibility and the importance of getting things done. It is thought to encompass the essence of the material world—the four points of the compass, the four seasons, the four elements, the four members of the nuclear family; father, mother, son and daughter—and therefore also implies strength, stability, order, harmony and wholeness. For Jungians, four can represent personal growth, as it represents Jung’s ‘quaternity’ of thoughts (conscious and unconscious), feelings, senses and intuitions. It is the number of the Emperor in the Tarot deck, a symbol of masculine strength and resolve—and its associated shape is the square.... The Element Encyclopedia

The Four Stages Of Sleep

‘Yet it is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.’
Virginia Woolf

Perhaps the best way to understand sleep and dreams is to understand the brain. At the very start of the twentieth century it was found that the brain gave off electrical impulses, and by the 1920s scientists could measure brain waves. To obtain these readings, electrodes were attached to various parts of the head, the impulses being transformed onto electroencephalograms (EECs) on computer screens.

It seems that once you settle down to bed, your brain and body undergo radical changes from their waking state. The difference between being asleep and being awake is loss of conscious awareness, and once you start to doze, dream researchers believe you progress through four stages of sleep. These form the basis of a cycle that repeats up to four or five times every eight hours of sleep.

During the first stage, your body and mind become relaxed. Heart and breathing rate slow down, blood pressure lowers, body temperature drops slightly and eyes roll from side to side. You are neither fully conscious, nor fully unconscious, and could easily awake if disturbed. This stage of gradually falling asleep is also called the hypnagogic state (the hypnopompic state is a similar state when you are just waking up) and you may experience hallucinations that float before your eyes.

In stage two, breathing and heart rate become even slower, eyes continue to roll and you become more and more unaware of the noises of the outside world. It isn’t until the third stage of sleep, however, that you are sleeping soundly and it would be difficult to wake you. Finally, you enter a deep sleep state known as non-rapid eye movement (NREM) when your brain is released from the demands of the conscious mind. It will now be quite hard to wake you and, although you may sleepwalk or have night terrors, you will rarely be able to remember them. This slow-wave sleep cycle lasts about ninety minutes. At the end of stage four, you move back through stages three and two and one, at which point you enter a phase called rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep.... Dreampedia
