Bridge

There are many meanings that you could give to this symbol.

The details in the dream are just as important as the bridge itself.

The first consideration should be given to how much you travel.

The bridge can be interpreted literally if it is a part of your daily commute. On a more theoretical level, bridges can symbolize transitions (e.g. transition from one stage to another, from one level of consciousness to another). Since most bridges are over water (i.e. emotions, unconscious), this dream could also be symbolic of your rising above your emotional difficulties or unconscious drives.... To see one, successful undertakings, probably a change; to cross one, work and anxiety in store; a broken bridge, fear and trouble and a warning to take no steps on an unknown road; to fall from a bridge denotes brain trouble (Artemidorus). These interpretations are distinctly traceable to the subconsciousness.

The symbolism of a bridge spanning water is obviously the subconscious hope of success. ‘Do not cross a bridge,” etc., is the proverb justifying the anticipation of work in store for the dreamer who crosses a bridge in his sleep.

The broken bridge bears its own significance, based upon the subconsciousness that warns the dreamer, while the fall from a bridge is a physical dream stimulated by dizziness, vertigo, etc.... The Fabric of Dream

Example: Having been enjoying ourselves with some work mates at a social club, my husband and I are travelling down a country lane in an open horsedrawn carriage.

It is dark. We come to a humpbacked bridge. As we arrive at the brow of the bridge a voice says, “Fair lady come to me”. I float and everything is black and peaceful. Then great fear overcomes me. I wake with terror and feelings of horror* (Evelyn K). Evelyn’s dream paints a vivid picture of her journey through life, drawn by the natural forces within her, shown as a horse. She has enjoyed life, but comes to the brow of her life, her 40th year, and feels it is all downhill now into old age, which horrifies her.

The bridge generally has this significance of crossing from one phase of life, activity or emphasis, to another. It depicts connection between yourself and a relationship; self and opportunity; self and change in life. Fallen bridge: lost opportunity, broken bonds and connections. Idioms, burn one’s bridges; cross that bridge when I come to it; water under the bridge. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Bridge

A frequent symbol in dreams and mythology, the bridge spans an abyss.

It is often a place of danger and of falling; you are crossing a boundary. In the Catholic faith, the protector is Saint Napomuk, patron saint of bridges. Uniting, re-establishing relationships; contradictions are bridged.

If the dreamer has self-confidence, the fear of the abyss may be going away, but although the bridge becomes wider and is safe, it is still a place of danger.

The condition of the bridge is important. How are you feeling on the bridge? When you have crossed the bridge, you have done a lot of inner work. Changes have taken place (you have reached the other shore).

In the Koran, the bridge over hell is as thin as a thread and can only be crossed by the righteous. In Celtic lore, there exists a bridge of horror that is also as narrow as a thread.

The bridge always spans an abyss in which spirits, the devil, or God resides. Often in the dream one must bring a sacrifice in order to cross the bridge.

For that reason we often see chapels on the bridge where the sacrifice has to be offered. Jung related the symbol of the bridge to the unconscious. He saw the unconscious as different islands in the sea.

For him, the bridge connected these islands and is therefore a symbol of working toward a strong consciousness.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

Bridge

(see also Corridor, Crossing)

Freud lists four meanings of the bridge symbol:

(1) It may represent the male sexual organ, which ‘bridges the gap’ between male and female sexual partners.

(2) It may also symbolize birth - that is, the crossing from ‘the other world’ to this, or from womb to independent existence.

(3) It may represent (something that leads to) death - that is, a return to the womb, or to ‘the other world’, ‘the other side’.

(4) It may symbolize any sort of transition in the dreamer’s life. Freud gives the example of a woman who wants to be a man, and consequendy dreams of bridges that don’t quite reach the other side of the river. However, the symbolized change may be something that can be achieved more easily, but still possibly requiring will and determination; for example, a change of lifestyle, or a passing from middle years into old age.

To Freud’s list we may add the following:

(5) The bridge is a means of crossing a river, and even perhaps crossing from one country to another - foreign, new, strange - country. It may therefore svmbolize a critical juncture in the dreamer’s life, a situation that calls for a definitive decision, a decision which may be of such a radical kind that it could well be described figuratively as entering a new country.

(6) If the bridge you are crossing seems in danger of collapsing, this may reflect your anxiety about a transition in your life: for example, about whether you are going to be able to go through with a change from living on your own to living with a partner (or the reverse); from one job to another; from one set of values to another.... Bridge

The bridge is something that mediates between two separate points. So, the pontiff, as the title’s etymology indicates, represents a bridge between God and humanity. In many cultures, the bridge is the element that symbolically links the sensitive and the supersensitive (in China, for example, it is considered the symbol of union between heaven and earth). Without this mystical meaning, the bridge symbolizes a transition.

Dreaming of this symbol is a sign that you are evolving or undergoing a change. Perhaps it is a job, a move, or a relationship that will soon begin. In this case it will critical whether the oneiric bridge was firm and if you crossed it safely. It may also refer to something more spiritual: the reception of new values and the burial of the past. Another possibility is that you are trying to join two pieces of your life or to fill an empty space of your life.

According to the guru Sathya Sai Baba, life is a bridge that crosses a sea full of changes. We must cross it but never build our house on it. The dream may represent your life journey.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Bridge

A bridge is essentially that which makes a connection between two separate entities. You are seeking to make connections within your own consciousness.

A dream about a bridge indicates that some sort of transition is taking place or that you are in search of a solution to what feels like an insurmountable problem. Since a bridge takes you from one place to another, it also carries the meaning of a transition in life. Since many bridges are suspended over water, an emotional issue is often the underlying conflict being expressed by this symbol.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Bridges often indicate literal travel. They also frequently represent life transitions. Because bodies of water symbolize the subconscious as well as the emotions, a bridge may indicate a structure that keeps one from falling into one’s subconscious or into one’s emotions (as in “bridge over troubled water”). Bridges are also links between two otherwise separated shores. Any one of these connotations might be indicated, and thus bridge images must be interpreted in the larger context of the dream.... Bridge Of The Day Of Judgement

(arb. Sirat) This is the bridge people have to walk on after the Day of Resurrection to meet their Lord on the Day of Judgement.

The ease of crossing it depends on the weight of deeds one is carrying. Some cross like lightening, while others have to carry their burdens and move at varying paste. Walking on it in a dream means ajourney. Ifthe bridge caves under one’s feet in the dream, it means destruction and death. Seeing this bridge in a dream also represents knowledge, truth, believing in God’s oneness and following the teachings and example of God’s Messenger upon whom be peace.

If one’s foot slips while crossing in the dream, it means that he will miss the true path.

If one sees himself walking the path in a dream, it means that he is on the right track, follows what is commanded and abstains from what is forbidden. It also means that one will undergo awesome changes, undertakes major responsibilities and succeeds to reach safety. Car / Driving

One of the most frequently occurring symbols of modern times. It points to the transformation into something new. Individual means of transportation, status symbol, motorized energy—it is also a sexual symbol. In a modern sense, usually a symbol for being on the go every day, and of psychological strength and mobility. As with the “Chariot” in the Tarot, it always presents a question about our road in life and how we are charting our course. As a symbol of environmental pollution, it often points to the need for inner growth.

Driving

Any driving dream connects to how you are moving through your life and the quality, sensations, and judgments you have about how this is going at the time of a dream in which driving is a prominent image.

If you are driving out of control in the dream, you must consider what area of your life might be beyond your ability to regulate.

If you are in the back seat and need to gain control of the car, look for ways in which you haven’t yet stepped up to the plate. You may not be able to do so yet because of circumstances beyond your control.

If your car isn’t responding to you, you may be feeling ineffectual about taking charge of some path you are traversing. Varying speeds might be reflecting movement in life that feels either too fast or too slow for your comfort.

A vehicle other than a car might point to being in foreign territory. You may not be feeling confident in your ability to work with the circumstances you have been handed. Causing an accident could be inviting you to look at the consequences of your choices. Being a victim of an accident might encourage you to look at the ways in which you have abandoned your own direction because of another person or outside force beyond your control. Rivers and streams always represent the way you live your life, as well as the way you see your life. Did you dream of a mean-dering river or one that was direct? The first would suggest emotional ups and downs, whilst the second would suggest emotional calm. Dreams of being carried along by a river or stream can refer to the passage of life from birth to death, but they are more likely to refer to your emotional life. How you felt in the dream will indicate the meaning; were you frightened, happy or excited? If the river is rushing by, this may suggest that you feel life is moving too quickly.

If it the river is static, your unconscious may have been commenting on your lack of drive and direction.

If you threw a stone in the river, did the ripples that formed echo your sense of going around in circles in waking life? The river depicts the richness or poverty of your life energy, so if you are crossing a river in your dream, this suggests you are in the process of making great changes in your life.

If you are in the water to cross, it means you will feel a lot of emotions in the process of change.

If you see someone else cross the river or fall into the river, this may refer to your feelings about aging and the passage of time.

If the river is contaminated, this suggests that you are holding back your feelings in waking life and not doing the best you can for yourself.

If you were in a river—or steamboat in your dream, this may refer to the circumstances that surround you, for example your family or home life. The context of the dream and how you feel will all help you with the interpretation. Was the boat solid and safe like a steamer, or fragile like a canoe or a dingy?

Canals, dams and reservoirs are all designed to regulate water flow and in dreams they suggest conscious attempts to control emotion; how effective they are at directing the water mirrors how effective you have become at controlling your emotions in waking life. A canal may also symbolize the birth canal and thus represent a desire for children. Because reservoirs are where water is collected and stored, if one features in your dream, could it be commenting on your own emotional reserves? The water level of the reservoir in this dream is important.

If it is high, your emotional resources are abundant but if it is low, you may be feeling emotionally drained by the demands of others. In dreams, dams also suggest control over your emotions, and their effectiveness in your dream will say a lot about your emotional health. If, in your dream, you were standing on a bridge watching the water flow beneath you, you could be ready to leave the past behind—as suggested by water under the bridge—since you are at a turning point in your life (the bridge is a symbol of transition).
