Creativity And Problem Solving In Dreams

Few dreams are, by themselves, problem solving or creative.

The few exceptions are usually very clear. Example: ‘My mother-in-law died of cancer. I had watched the whole progression of her illness, and was very upset by her death. Shortly after she died the relatives gathered and began to sort through her belongings to share them out. That was the climax of my upset and distress, and I didn’t want any part of this sorting and taking her things. That night I dreamt I was in a room with all the relatives. They were sorting her things, and I felt my waking distress. Then my mother-in-law came into the room. She was very real and seemed happy. She said for me not to be upset as she didn’t at all mind her relatives taking her things. When I woke from the dream all the anxiety and upset had disappeared. It never returned (told to author dunng a talk given to the Housewives Register in Ilfracombe).

Although in any collection of dreams such clearcut problem solving is fairly rare, nevertheless the basic function in dreams appears to be problem solving.

The proof of this lies in research done in dream withdrawal. As explained in the entry science, sleep and dreams, subjects are woken up as they begin to dream, therefore denying them dreams. This quickly leads to disorientation and breakdown of normal functioning, showing that a lot of problem solving occurs in dreams, even though it may not be as obvious as in the example. This feature of dreaming can be enhanced to a marked degree by processing dreams and arriving at insights into the information they contain. This enables old problems to be cleared up and new information and attitudes to be brought into use more quickly. Through such active work one becomes aware of the self, which Carl Jung describes as a centre, but which we might think of as a synthesis of all our experience and being. Gaining insight and allowing the self entrance into our waking affairs, as M L. Von Franz says in Man and His Symbols, gradually produces a wider and more mature personality’ which emerges, and by degrees becomes effective and even visible to others’.

The function of dreams may well be described as an effort on the part of our life process to support, augment and help mature waking consciousness.

A study of dreams suggests that the creative forces which are behind the growth of our body are also inextricably connected with psychological development. In fact, when the process of physical growth stops, the psychological growth continues.

If this is thwarted in any way, it leads to frustration, physical tension and psychosomatic and eventually physical illness.

The integration of experience.

which dreams are always attempting, if successful cannot help but lead to personal growth. But it is often frozen by the individual avoiding the growing pains’, or the discomfon of breaking through old concepts and beliefs.

Where there is any attempt on the pan of our conscious personality to co-operate with this, the creative aspect of dreaming emerges. In fact anything we are deeply involved in, challenged by or attempting, we will dream about in a creative way. Not only have communities like the American Indians used dreams in this manner—to find better hunting, solve community problems, find a sense of personal life direction— but scientists, writers, designers and thousands of lay people have found very real information in dreams After all, through dreams we have personal use of the greatest computer ever produced in the history of the world—the human brain.

1- In Genesis 41, the story of Pharaoh’s dream is told—the seven fat cows and the seven thin cows. This dream was creative in that, with Joseph’s interpretation, it resolved a national problem where famine followed years of plenty. It may very well be an example of gathered information on the history of Egypt being in the mind of Pharaoh, and the dream putting it together in a problem solving way. See dream process as computer.

2- William Blake dreamt his dead brother showed him a new way of engraving copper. Blake used the method successfully.

3- Otto Leowi dreamt of how to prove that nervous impulses were chemical rather than electncal. This led to his Nobel prize.

4- Friedrich Kekule tned for years to define the structure of benzene. He dreamt of a snake with its tail in its mouth, and woke to realise this explained the molecular formation of the benzene ring. He was so impressed he urged colleagues, ‘Gentlemen, leam to dream.’

5- Hilprecht had an amazing dream of the connection between two pieces of agate which enabled him to translate an ancient Babylonian inscription.

6- Elias Howe faced the problem of how to produce an effective sewing machine.

The major difficulty was the needle. He dreamt of natives shaking spears with holes in their points. This led to the invention of the Singer sewing machine.

7- Robert Louis Stevenson claims to have dreamt the plot of many of his stories.

8- Albert Einstein said that during adolescence he dreamt he was riding a sledge. It went faster and faster until it reached the speed of light.

The stars began to change into amazing patterns and colours, dazzling and beautiful. His meditation on that dream throughout the years led to the theory of relativity.

To approach our dreams in order to discover their creativity, first decide what problematic or creative aspect of your life needs ‘dream power’. Define what you have already leamt or know about the problem. Write it down, and from this clarify what it is you want more insight into.

If this breaks down into several issues, choose one at a time. Think about the issue and pursue it as much as you can while awake. Read about it, ask people’s opinions, gather information. This is all data for the dream process.

If the question still needs further insight, before going to sleep imagine you are putting the question to your internal store of wisdom, computer, power centre, or whatever image feels right.

For some people an old being who is neither exclusively man nor woman is a working image.

In the morning note down whatever dream you remember. It does not matter if the dream does not appear to deal with the question; Elias Howe’s native spears were an outlandish image, but nevertheless contained the information he needed. Investigate the dream using the techniques given in the entry dream processing. Some problems take time to define, so use the process until there is a resolution.

If it is a major problem, it may take a year or so; after all, some resolutions need restructuring of the personality, because the problem cannot disappear while we still have the same attitudes and fears. See secret of the universe dreams; dream processing. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Difficulty / Problem

Dreams in which you are struggling to climb an unknown mountain or cliff, fighting your way through snow and ice, wading through a bog, or lost and wandering alone in a forest or jungle apply to a number of difficulties you may be encountering in your waking life. In most instances, such dreams only occur when you have tried to solve a problem and all your options seem to have been exhausted. Such a dream may be reflecting your reallife difficulties and the emotional or mental struggles you are facing.

If you are prone to such dreams, you might want to try asking your dreaming mind to show you a way off the mountain or out of the jungle, forest or bog just before you go to sleep. Your dream may respond by offering you another dream scenario that may contain symbolic clues to help you solve your waking problem.

Any problem, obstacle or irritation you face in dreamland, such as being unable to find a pen when you need one, light bulbs suddenly going out, being unable to pick something up, trying and failing to start a car or put up a deckchair or assemble a pushchair can suggest a problem in waking life that you are finding difficult to resolve. Your dreaming mind has thousands upon thousands of symbolic disguises to draw upon, so whenever things don’t go smoothly in dreamland, the chances are this indicates situations in waking life that you are struggling to resolve.... Dog

Easy expression of such aspects of ourself as aggression —maybe because dogs show their teeth easily—sexuality, friendship; our easy flowing natural feelings, devotion, perhaps to a lover or child.

For some people a dog was the only source of expressive love in their childhood, so may well depict this. Dor on lead: restrained or controlled urges.

The dog appears more often than other animals in dreams.

Example: I continue on my path, and suddenly the nettles disappear and the path is clear. Ahead the wall has curved round to face me, hut there is a gate in it, and I can see my dog waiting for me on the other side’ (Mrs MG). In the dream of this elderly woman the dog is leading the way through the experience of meeting death. Mythology has often shown the dog in this light, as an inner sense of knowing how to find transformation through death—or as the ravaging threat of death. Dog

The animalistic.

A symbol of instincts to be used and guided by conscience.

The dog may also appear as a guard to protect property and defend against attack. He may symbolize a true friend.

The dog is the closest creature that humans come to call “brother.” It may also represent part of the dreamer—for instance, the shadow.

The dog as a pet almost always points to our instinct or loss of instinct, particularly when it is a trained dog, which in this case does not imply cultivation, but rather the destruction of instincts.

The dog is also one who needs to inspect its environment, who looks for and finds information. In the Tarot the two images of “the Fool” and “the Dog” always appear together.

A vicious dog means envy and unscrupulousness. According to Jung, the dog is the undertaker who buries the Corpse.

The dog with its instincts is seen as aiding the process of dying and resurrection (like Anubis in ancient Egyptian mythology). According to Greek mythology, the dog from hell, Cerberus, stands on the border between life and death.

We may recognize a faithful and constant companion, a protector or, more negatively, somebody we can’t shake off and who might make trouble.

Dreaming of a dog we once owned or knew at a previous time in our lives shows that there may be memories associated with that period of our life, which hold clues to present behaviour.

Dog

As a general rule dogs in a dream are a good omen and symbolize friends.

Of course the interpretation varies according to the action and other details but is fairly straightforward.

If the dog was friendly and affectionate, it signifies pleasure and happy times with friends; a fierce or snarling dog suggests disagreements or untrustworthy friends; and if it bit or attacked, you are being warned to look out for actual deceit or harmful trickery from someone you have trusted.

To hear a dog bark happily signifies pleasing social recognition, but if it barked fiercely, you are being warned of possible legal troubles, so don’t fiddle your taxes or park your car too close to a hydrant.

To see dogs fighting indicates that you may be called on to arbitrate in an argument between friends, in which case you must be extra tactful to avoid ending up the odd man out.

If the dog in your dream was an exceptionally large one, it signifies protection through a powerful friend.

Dog

(1) A dog may symbolize your ‘animal’ nature, particularly if you haven’t yet accepted that you have an animal nature!

(2) If the dog is frothing with rage, this might indicate some repressed part of you is now ‘at the end of its tether’ and will cause a lot of trouble if not given attention and allowed its proper place in your life.

(3) If the dog is paired with, say, a wolf, then it is the wolf that will symbolize your animal nature, and the dog (if its emotional ‘feel’ is contrasted in the dream with that of the wolf) will represent some ‘higher’ part of your nature.

(4) The dog may stand for some person you know, in which case the dream will be telling you something about the person’s character or expressing what you feel about the person (that he or she is a ‘dog’ or a ‘bitch’). See also Animal, Wolf.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Dog

Throughout history, the dogs have helped man to hunt and drive their herds. They are the emblem of fidelity, friendship, and companionship. In addition, they show a good understanding of our nature. To dream of a dog may reflect the desire to feel loved and protected, to have someone to share life with. Depending on how the dog appears in the dream, however, changes the interpretation of its meaning. Do not forget that this is an animal that behaves aggressively if it does not know you or believes you are threatening the property it defends. In this case, you may be developing an internal conflict with your more instinctive side.

If dog pulls at the leash that ties it, it denotes that your emotions cannot take any more. Maybe you need to act out your anger about something that saddens you.

According to a dream oracle, this dream predicts ruin. In particular, tradition affirms that a gentle, happy, and well behaved dog is an omen of deception.

If the animal barks and bites, the dream is a sign of injuries, betrayals, and adversity.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

A dog in your dream connects to loyalty and love, which can indicate that issues of commitment and intimacy are being triggered by some event or circumstance.

A positive dream experience could be pointing to places in your life that are sparking enthusiasm or requiring you to become more enthusiastic and joyful. Frightening images involving dogs may be inviting you to investigate unconscious fears around love and connection.

A rabid dog represents inner fears of danger that may befall you if you get too close to an intimate situation. An actual dog bite represents the misuse of kindness or consideration. An obedient dog may point to a sense of control in areas of friendship and trust. Different types of dogs can embody a variety of qualities, from the dog that rescues a person in danger to the harrowing attacker. Dogs participate in the larger meaning of beasts or creatures, all of which can refer to our natural selves, in either the positive or negative sense of “animal.” Dogs, however, as some of the first domesticated animals, can refer to a wide variety of symbolic meanings, from going along with the “pack,” to hunting (dogs “sniff out” the quarry), to loyalty (“man’s best friend”), to abuse (“treated like a dog”), to exhaustion (“dog-tired”), to tenacity (“doggedness”). Also, as animals who guard the underworld, they can be messengers of the unconscious.

Dog

The dog appears more often than any other animal in dreams. It represents your natural drives that, despite usually being well socialized, still have a tendency to revert back to their spontaneous or ‘wild’ state. This is particularly the case if the dog within is provoked or encouraged. Dogs can also represent those parts of yourself that you express spontaneously: your easy-flowing natural feelings; devotion, perhaps to a lover or child; fidelity and faithfulness. Like the cat, the dog can be a substitute baby for women, or represent an outlet for affection or caring. This is particularly true of dreams about puppies, which are a symbol of childlike playfulness or following someone about in a devoted way. In mythology, the dog has symbolized the guardian of the gates of death, or a messenger between the hidden and the visible worlds. The dog was also thought of as a guide or guardian of the hidden side of life.

If a dog appears in your dream, pay attention to whether it was aggressive or friendly. It is also important to consider what your waking feelings about dogs are, as this will have an influence on the interpretation of your dream.

If you love dogs and you enjoyed caring for or playing with your dog in your dream, then it may be a sign that you are in need of more fun and friendship in your real life. Alternatively, because dogs are traditionally thought to be loyal, dependable, faithful friends and protectors to humans, it may be that your unconscious was highlighting these qualities within yourself or a person you know. Perhaps you are longing to have a friend you can trust and on whom you can depend.

Dogs typically represent friends and companionship in dreams, so if you dreamed of taking out-of-control dogs for a walk with them all straining on a lead, perhaps you are finding it hard to fit into your current circle of friends; do you feel that you have little in common with them anymore? If your dog broke away from you or you dropped its lead in your dream, do you fear losing the trust or loyalty of your friends? If you are taking a dog for a walk and were holding the lead, this suggests that you might be restraining of your aggression towards a friend or someone else; if someone else is holding the lead, it may be that you are feeling attacked by someone you know.

If a dog was aggressive in your dream and you fear dogs in waking life, your unconscious may have been reflecting your waking fear. If, however, you love dogs in real life, such a dream may represent a friend who is about to turn on you in waking life—perhaps they already have.

The loud barking of a dream dog can signal the animal within you trying to break free. Perhaps you feel angry about someone or something and are close to exploding with rage; or is your bark worse than your bite? A dog barking happily shows that you are enjoying your social life. A friendly, happy dog shows that you have lots of good friends. A dog barking and snarling warns against enemies and if the dream dog is big and powerful, as well as friendly, it shows that you feel in need of a powerful protector.

If a dog bit you in your dream, could this suggest an ungrateful loved one or relative who is biting the hand that feeds? Since dogs are often associated with masculine energy, if you were attacked by a dream dog, such a dream might represent feelings about a man or a relationship with a man. The black dog figures quite frequently in people’s dream imagery. For some people it represents depression; for others, death.

If a dog appears in your dream you may also want to consider if your dreaming mind is speaking in puns. Do you feel ‘sick as a dog’ or are you ‘in the doghouse’, and so on? Although interpretations will vary, bear in mind that in general a dream of dogs usually has positive association.... The Element Encyclopedia

Dog

Dogs in dreams could symbolize a large variety of ideas and concepts, but mostly they are symbolic of the dreamer’s defensive structure and may represent personal boundary issues. Carefully consider all of the details and the mood in your dream. First, if you have a dog, it may be natural to dream about him. We become emotionally attached to our dogs and we dream about them just as we dream about anything else that is important to us. Otherwise, dogs could symbolize loyalty and hard work.

If someone calls you a dog, it is a negative reflection on your personality.

If you are being treated like a dog, you are most likely being abused in some way. On the metaphysical level, dogs are consider to be the guardians of the underworld. Finally, dogs could represent the more basic or “animal” parts of our nature and some think that they specifically represent male energy. Male, aggressive (could be over friendly) energies.... Dream Process As Computer

The brain is not a computer, but it has the power to compute.

The word computare is Latin, and comes from putare, to think. Neither is a computer anything like a human brain. But there are parallels. Christopher Evans, a psychologist, computer scientist and world authority on microprocessors, says the brain and computers are both information handling devices, taking impulses which in themselves mean nothing, like sound waves, and processing them.

It is also his theory that both computers and the waking-brain function are taken off-line to re-program. Our behaviour responses and information bases need bringing up to date with any new experience and information that is relevant. In the case of the computer, off-line means having modifications made to programs, in the human it means sleeping and dreaming, the dream being the powerful activity of review, sifting and reprogramming. Thirdly, the brain and computer use programs. In humans, a program means a learnt set of responses, values or activities, such as walking or talking, but including more subtle activities such as judging social or business situations.

If, as Christopher Evans believes, dreaming is partly a period of revising and updating responses, insights and skills, then by working with the process one can make it more efficient.

The background for this statement is that many people have recurring dreams which change very little. Looking at this from the programming’ view, the attempt to revise is thwarted. But individuals can free such ‘stuck’ dreams by using dream processing.

Also, as some dreams are obviously a synthesis of experience and information gathered over a lifetime, the dream process is much more than a computing function which sorts new information and updates.

It is also capable of creative leaps through synthesis and conjecture. J.B. Priestley’s dream of the birds (see religion and dreams) appears to be a massive synthesis of things observed over a lifetime. It also depicts a brain function like computer simulation, which takes information and forms it into an expenmental view of possibilities arising from the thousands of millions of separate bits of gathered data. Dream Processing

Below are described simple techniques which make it possible to gain information quickly from dreams. They have been put as a series of questions.

What is the background to the dream? The most imponant aspects of your everyday life may have influenced the dream or feature in it. Briefly consider any aspects of your life which connect with what appears in the dream. Example: ‘1 have a plane to catch. I get to the plane but the suitcase is never big enough for my clothing which I have left behind. I am always anxious about stuff left behind. I wake still with the feeling of anxiety’ (Jane). When asked, Jane said plane flights had been a big feature of her life. She had moved home often, travelling to different pans of the world, leaving friends and loved ones behind.

What is the main action in the dream? There is often an overall activity such as walking, looking, worrying, building something, or trying to escape. Define what it is and consider if it is expressive of something you are doing in waking life. Activities such as walking or building a house need to be seen as generalisations; walking can simply represent taking a direction in life. When you have defined the action, look for further information under the other headings in this book, such as swimming or sitting.

What is your role in the dream? Are you a friend, lover, soldier, dictator, watcher or participant in the dream? Consider this in relationship with your everyday life, especially in connection with how the dream presents it. Where possible, look for the entry on the role in this book. See dreamer.

Are you active or passive in the dream? By passive is meant not taking the leading role, being only an observer, being directed by other people and events, If you are passive, consider if you live in a similar attitude in your life. See active/passive.

What do you feel in the dream? Define what is felt emotionally and physically. In the physical sense are you tired, cold, relaxed or hungry? In the emotional sense do you feel sad, angry, lost, tender or frightened anywhere in the dream? This helps clarify what feeling area the dream is dealing with.

It is important also to define whether the feelings in the dream were satisfyingly expressed or whether held back.

If held back they need fuller expression. See emotions and mood.

Is there a because’ factor in the dream? In many dreams something happens, fails to happen, or appears . . . because! For instance, trapped in a room you find a door to escape through. All is dark beyond and you do not go through the door ‘because’ you are frightened of the dark. In this case the ‘because’ factor is fear.

The dream also suggests you are trapped in an unsatisfying life through fear of opportunity or the unknown.

Am I meeting the things I fear in my dream? Because a dream is an entirely inward thing, we create it completely out of our own internal feelings, images, creativity, habits and insights. So even the monsters of our dream are a pan of ourself.

If we run from them it is only aspects of ourself we are avoiding. Through defining what feelings occur in the dream you may be able to clarify what it is you are avoiding. See nightmares; dream as spiritual guide.

What does the dream mean? We alone create the dream while asleep. Therefore, by looking at each symbol or aspect of the dream, we can discover from what feelings, thoughts or experience, what drive or what insight we have created the drama of the dream. In a playful relaxed way, express whatever you think, feel, remember or fantasise when you hold each symbol in mind. Say or write it all, even the seemingly trivial or dangerous’ bits. It helps to act the pan of each thing if you can; for instance as a house you might describe yourself as ‘a bit old, but with open doors for family and friends to come in and out. I feel solid and dependable, but I sense there is something hidden in my cellar’. Such statements portray oneself graphically. Consider whatever information you gather as descriptive of your waking life. Try to summarise it, as this will aid the gaining of insight.

Try amplifying your dream You will need the help of one or two friends to use this method.

The basis is to take the role of each part of the dream, as described above. This may seem strange at first, but persist. Supposing your name is Julia and you dreamt you were carrying an umbrella, but failed to use it even though it was raining, you would talk in the first person present—I am an umbrella. Julia is carrying me but for some reason doesn’t use me.’ Having finished saying what you could about yourself, your friend(s) then ask you questions about yourself as the dream figure or object. These questions need to be simple and directly about the dream symbol. So they could ask Are you an old umbrella?’ Does Julia know she is canying you?’ ‘What is your function as an umbrella? ‘Are you big enough to shelter Julia and someone else?’ And so on.

The aim of the questions is to draw out information about the symbol being explored.

If it is a known person or object you are in the role of—your father for instance—the replies to the questions need to be answered from the point of view of what happened in the dream, rather than as in real life. Listen to what you are saying about yourself as the dream symbol, and when your questioneKs) has finished, review your statements to see if you can see how they refer to your life and yourself.

If you are asking the questions, even if you have ideas regarding the dream, do not attempt to interpret. Put your ideas into simple questions the dreamer can respond to. Maintain a sense of curiosity and attempt to understand, to make the dream plain in an everyday language sense. Lead the dreamer towards seeing what the dream means through the questions. When you have exhausted your questions ask the dreamer to summarise what they have gathered from their replies. See postures, movements and body language for an example of how to work with body movement to explore a dream meaning.

Can / alter the dream to find greater satisfaction? Imagine yourself in the dream and continue it as a fantasy or daydream. Alter the dream in any way that satisfies. Experiment with it, play with it, until you find a fuller sense of self expression.

It is very imponant to note whether any anger or hostility is in the dream but not fully expressed.

If so, let yourself imagine a full expression of the anger. It may be that as this is practised more anger is openly expressed in subsequent dreams. This is healthy, allowing such feelings to be vented and redirected into satisfying ways, individually and socially. In doing this do not ignore any feelings of resistance, pleasure or anxiety. Satisfaction occurs only as we leam to acknowledge and integrate resistances and anxieties into what we express. This is a very important step. It gradually changes those of our habits which trap us in lack of satisfaction, poor creativity or inability to resolve problems.

Summary To summarise effectively gather the essence of what you have said about each symbol and the dream as a whole and express it in everyday language. Imagine you are explaining to someone who knows nothing about yourself or the dream. Bnng the dream out of its symbols into everyday comments about yourself.

A man dreamt about a grey, dull office. When he looked at what he said about the office he realised he was talking about the grey, unimaginative world he grew up in after the Second World War, and how it shaped him.

Dreams And The Grieving Process

Dreams that focus on the early stages of mourning after the loss of a loved one are often dreams in which the dead person is still alive and well, and continuing to participate in your life. You may, for example, dream of having breakfast with them or taking a walk in the park, just the same as you did when they were alive. The reason for this is that your dreaming mind has not yet accepted the person’s absence from your life. This is a natural and healthy type of dream to have in the first phase of mourning as it allows your dreaming mind to escape the pain of reality. Some dream analysts describe such dreams not as denial, but as a catalogue of all the memories the survivor has of that person.

You may well find that feelings of hostility or anger feature in these dreams because, along with deep feelings of sadness, there are also feelings of fury that the person you cared about has left you. You may have dreams that express how guilty you feel; for example, you may dream that you are once again tending your sick relative but your attention is focused elsewhere and you can’t make them feel comfortable; similarly, you may dream that you become sick yourself or try to prevent the death happening.

At some point, however, your dreams will begin to reflect the grief and awareness that your loved one has died. Perhaps you dream you are at a restaurant and suddenly realize you need to eat alone because your partner isn’t delayed. Such dreams are often characterized by deep sadness and tears, and it is quite normal to feel depressed after having one of these. You may find yourself revisiting earlier stages of your grief again at this time, and it is very common for dead people to come into dreams to let us know it is time to stop mourning. Even if your spiritual beliefs lead you to believe that the person who has died is still with you, you still need to go through the grieving and healing process, acknowledging all the good and bad feelings you had about this person and what their death means to you. Dreams can help you with this process and experts believe it typically takes around two years to fully pass through all the stages of grief.

But what if you are still having vivid and emotional dreams of a departed loved one ten years after their death? It’s possible that you are still holding onto feelings of love and anger. Perhaps you are stuck with your grief or are simply unable to process it. For example, you may dream that a loved one keeps turning up and shouting at you.

If you have always been taught that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, then such a harmful and narrow stereotype is interfering with the natural processes of grief. Your dreaming mind will therefore highlight the issues that are stopping you completing the grieving process and moving forward with your life.

If you find yourself unable to resolve ‘unfinished business’ and move beyond feeling stuck in the grief process, consulting a therapist could be helpful.

Bear in mind that that for which you mourn may not be solely your family, friends and pets. You grieve for what you have lost and your dreams may express your sense of loss concerning important objects, such as a home; important relationships, such as the end of a marriage; important projects, such as losing a job you loved; important dreams for the future, such as the loss of a baby due to a failed IVF attempt or miscarriage; and important feelings, such as the loss of trust if you have been the victim of a violent crime. Make note of whom or what you are mourning and try to ascertain which stage of grief you are in. Do your dreams reflect this and do they give you a suggestion for how far you might begin to accept the loss?... The Element Encyclopedia

Home Improvement / Housework

If your dream hasn’t been triggered by a television home makeover show, making improvements to your home may symbolize making improvements to yourself. Are there any jobs that you feel need to be done right now? Could you do with a coat of paint to brighten yourself up with a fresh new color? If you dream of building an extension, do you want or need to expand your horizons? Putting on a new roof may relate to raising your expectations, whilst applying a coat of varnish or paint can suggest a desire to disguise your own self-perceived flaws. It can also indicate the desire to gloss over problems in a relationship.

Whitewash may represent your attempts to cover up something that causes you embarrassment, whether relating to your own feelings of guilt or your suspicion that others are not what they seem. Clearing or laying down new paths or foundations may relate to new approaches to life.

If household breakages feature in your dream this may represent flawed ideas. A cracked cup can symbolize lost love. A dream of breaking things in the house may suggest anger or despair.

Dreams of housework in general suggest keeping your internal house in order, perhaps by taking time to clarify or define motives, opinions and feelings about others; they also stand for the cleaning out of non-functional or negative attitudes, thoughts and experiences. To dream that you are cleaning your house with a broom or dustpan and brush signifies your need to clear out your thoughts and get rid of old ways. You are seeking self-improvement.

If you, or a cleaner, are cleaning, this may also recall memories of your mother. Alternatively, the house being cleaned may symbolize the self and a need to give extra care and attention to neglected aspects of your personality.

When compared with sweeping up, vacuum cleaning suggests both a definite desire to do away once and for all with the effects of a past action, and a definite desire to move on and put the past behind you.

To dream of cleaning windows suggests that you are trying to get a clearer view of the world around you. Using a washing machine may suggest it is time to confront old issues that are destroying your peace of mind. The water may also point to deep-seated childhood issues that need to come out in the wash. Hanging your clothes out to dry may suggest a yearning for the lost innocence of childhood or a desire for uninhibited sexuality.

If you are washing the dishes in your dream kitchen, this may suggest a desire to wash away feelings of shame or disgust, or a wish to deny responsibility for something.... The Element Encyclopedia

The symbol appears frequently in the dreams of “confirmed” bachelors and men with strong bonds to their mothers, as well as in the dreams of girls who have had a particularly sheltered upbringing. Acknowledge your urges and have the courage to be who you are!

Inappropriate Attire

Dreams in which you are inappropriately dressed or underdressed when everyone else is appropriately dressed for the occasion are classic metaphors for feelings of frustration and uncertainty in your waking life. Perhaps you arrive at your dream party wearing formal dress and everyone else is in shorts.

If you are underdressed, it suggests that you feel out of place or are falling short of other people’s standards.

If you are overdressed, a misplaced air of superiority is indicated. Such dreams also reflect your insecurity about your social position and how other people regard you.

If you were completely naked whilst everyone else was dressed, did you feel liberated or mortified?

The clothes we wear in dreams are aspects of our persona, so when they are stripped away they enable you to see your—self for who you really are; in other words, the absence of clothes reveals not only your body, but also your true self.

If you felt embarrassed in your dream, do you feel vulnerable about exposing your true self or feel that it is lacking in some way? Are you afraid of being rejected if you show others what you truly feel? What are you afraid of exposing about yourself? If, however, you felt liberated, perhaps it is time to throw away your pretences and reveal to others who you truly are.

If nobody other than yourself noticed your nudity, your unconscious is comforting you by letting you know that it is safe to reveal your feelings in the real world. Another symbol of frustration in dreams is being refused a restaurant table, especially if there are plenty of spare tables in the restaurant. Such a dream, with its association with food and social interaction, may express a sense of social inadequacy.... The Element Encyclopedia

Inappropriate Pairing

At whatever stage of life you are, if there is a deep imbalance or lack of harmony in your current relationship, you may find that your dreams take on a warning quality, even becoming haunted and strange. Plants, trees, animals and fish in particular tend to appear as symbols of the life or vitality of the relationship; if you are having relationships problems, you may dream of trying to rescue an injured animal or watering dying plants. Another common dream is entrusting your beloved pet or fish to your partner’s care, only to return and find it neglected, dying or even dead. These may all be symbols of those of your emotional needs that are being starved or denied, and of relationships that are struggling to survive.

Other dreams that signal emotional imbalance in intimate relationships are dreams of houses on fire, bombs that are about to explode or images of starvation, loneliness, torture or neglect. These images are warning you that your relationship is out of balance, dangerously fragile or in need of rescuing in your waking life. An inappropriate meeting or pairing of two objects in your dream, for example a kangaroo and a light bulb, might suggest that you are somewhat concerned about an unsuitable partner; this might either be your own partner, or that of someone close to you—say a son or a daughter. Repeatedly getting the wrong person on the phone, seeing an email error message or simply being unable to communicate may also indicate a disturbing inability to communicate with someone in your life who is important to you.

If you are having problems with your cellphone, this might be seen by Freudians as a symbol of sexual dysfunction or anxiety. Another potent symbol of a relationship coming to an end is the image of gold dust or precious jewels running through your fingers in a dream. The image is even more eloquent if you are running with two cupped hands full of water in an attempt to quench your own or someone else’s thirst and the dream water falls through your hands

A real-life need to resolve relationship problems may be symbolized by dreams about repairing something, perhaps fixing a car or attaching things together with glue, sellotape or bluetac.

If you experience blocked communication in your relationship or suffer from an inability to get through to someone close to you, you may have dreams in which people are staring at one another in your dream but no one is saying. Such a dream may also suggest that now is an excellent time to deepen your relationship, as the silent figures await your signal for a new and exciting phase of your relationship to begin.... Inappropriate Partner

If you are in a committed relationship and dreamt of sleeping with someone else’s husband or wife or someone who is sexually off limits, such as a cousin or your doctor, remember that the message from your unconscious may not have been that you desire that person, although this is a possible interpretation, but that you would like to have a closer emotional connection to them.

If you wake from such a dream with feelings of remorse, perhaps you have been unfaithful or less than honest with your partner in other ways. It is also worth bearing in mind when trying to interpret dreams that depict you making love to someone who plays a major, but definitely nonsexual, part in your life that your unconscious may simply be reflecting your waking preoccupation with them at the same time that you are becoming sexually aroused. So if you dreamt of making love to your unattractive boss, it may simply have been a coincidence that they stepped into the lover role in your dreams.... The Element Encyclopedia

Information Processing

According to modem theory, the amount of information the human brain can hold is more than is held in all the books in the Library of the British Museum. Gradually it is becoming recognised that information gathered is not simply what we ‘learn’ from vocal communication, or read, or set out to leam. In fact an unimaginable amount of information gathering has gone on prior to speech, and goes on at an unimaginable speed prior to school years. Consider a small preschool child walking into the garden It has learnt gradually to relate to muscular movement, balance and its own motivations and feeling reactions in a way enabling it to walk. It has already grasped thousands of bits of ‘information’ about such things as plants in the garden, the neighbour’s cat, the road outside, possible dangers, safe areas. Stupendous amounts have already been absorbed about interrelationships.

An idea of ‘reality’ in the sense of what is probable, and what would be dangerously out of norm, has been formed. We gather information in ways little recognised. How our parents relate to their environment and to other people is all recorded and leamt from, bringing about enormous ‘programming’ affecting how we act in similar circumstances.

As explained in the entry on the dream as spiritual guide, we have great ability in ‘reading’ symbols, ritual, an, music, body language, architecture, drama, and extracting ‘meaning’ from them. So we have immense stores of information from these sources. Work done with people exploring their dreams over a long period suggests that some of these information resources are never focused on enough to make conscious what we have actually learnt. Sometimes it is enough simply to ask oneself a question to begin to focus some of these resources. Such questions as what social attitude and response to authority did I learn at school? What feeling reaction do I get when I am in the presence of someone I know well? These may help to bring to awareness aspects of information gathered but remaining unconscious. These unfocused, or unconscious, areas of information can explain why we have apparently irrational feeling responses to some people or situations.

the body A lot of what we call the unconscious are basic physiological and psychological functions.

For instance in a modern house, when we flush the toilet, we do not have to bring a bucket of water and fill the cistern again.

A self regulating mechanism allows water to flow in and switches it off when full. This is a clever built-in function that had to be done manually at one time. Nowadays we have built into some dwellings fire sprinklers or burglar alarms. Through repeated actions over thousands or millions of years, many basic functions, or functions only switched on in emergencies, have been built into our being. We do not need to think about them, just as we do not have to give awareness to the fire sprinkling system or toilet each time we walk through a room or flush the toilet. They are therefore unconscious.

Research with animals in connection with rewards and conditioned reflexes has shown that by gradually leading an animal towards a certain performance by rewarding it each time it gets nearer to the goal, it can do the most amazing things. It can increase the circulation of blood to its ear, slow its heart, and in fact influence body functions which were thought to be completely involuntary. Where human beings have learnt to use some of these techniques—such as raising the temperature of an arm at will, or helping to increase the efficiency of the immune system—the actual processes still remain unconscious. In general, however, the body’s functions are thought to be outside our awareness, and so are one of the areas of the unconscious. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Interpretation By Correlation, Relativity, And Approximation

In this case, laughing in a dream means sorrow, while smiling in a dream means politeness and correct conduct.

Crying in a dream is usually interpreted as happiness, but when accompanied with intonation or wailing, it means a calamity.

As for putting grease over one's hair, dream interpreters infer the meaning of adornment, while if it dribbles over one's face, they call it hypocrisy, fawning, or adulation.

As for saffron in a dream, they interpret it to mean praises or commendation, while should its color manifest in one's body or clothing, then they call it an illness.

As for feathers in a dream, they call them wealth or comfort, but when one sees himself flying with wings, they interpret it to mean travels or rising in station, depending on how high one reaches in his dream.

If one's hand is cut off in a dream, and if he sees himself carrying it, it means having a brother or a son, while if he loses it in the dream, it means an adversity or loss of a brother or a son.

If a sick person sees himself in a dream walking out of his house in silence, it means his death and funeral, while if he speaks in the dream, it means that he will recover from his illness. ... Dreampedia

Problems

To cut your own hair, or have it cut, is a sign of success in a new venture or sphere of activity.

To cut someone else’s hair is a warning of hidden jealousy around you.

A dream of braiding your hair predicts the forging of a new link of friendship, but to braid someone else’s hair portends an unhappy argument Curling or setting your hair pertains to em- tional affairs and promises either an improvement in your marital relations or a new romance.

Bleaching your hair suggests you would be wise to be somewhat less flirtatious, and dyeing it suggests that you are allowing vanity to overcome your common sense.

Having your hair pulled indicates untrustworthy friends or colleagues, and gray or white hair predicts sad (but not grievous) news.

To put brilliantine (or similar treatment) on your hair to slick it down smoothly is a forerunner of brightening prospects and/or advancement in status; to have your hair done by a hairdresser is a warning against repeating gossip.

Eating or chewing hair signifies that you would be well advised to give more attention to your own affairs and less to the affairs of others.

To find hair on some unusual part of your body promises a steady increase in material wealth.

Problems With Clothing

Clothing that is incongruous to the situation might be a comment on your view of your position in society. Have you found your proper place? Are you comfortable with it? Inadequate, untidy or inappropriate clothing that makes you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed indicates that you feel uncomfortable or ill prepared to fit in with people’s expectations. Are you deliberately not conforming to what is expected of you, or are you trying too hard to adopt a certain role?

Clothing that is too tight, too small or dating back to childhood suggests that something about your current attitude or approach is holding you back. It may also suggest that you are aiming for more than you can achieve in the present circumstances. For Freudians, tight clothing may indicate a preoccupation with the breasts and buttocks whose shape they reveal. The dreamer wearing loose clothing may be attempting to conceal their true self, but it may also represent a yearning to be free of inhibitions.

If you are wearing formal clothes when everyone else is dressed casually, perhaps you have ideas above your station; alternatively, the dream may be a warning against snobbery. On the other hand, being sloppily dressed in a formal setting may be suggesting that your behavior is damaging your prospects. It is also common to dream about being unable to find a suitable outfit or searching frantically for appropriate clothes; such dreams reflect anxiety about being adequately prepared to meet the obligations and demands placed upon you.

Dreamers dressed in shabby clothes, rags or clothes that have rips and tears may be projecting an image of inferiority or low self- esteem, and the dream may be a warning to build their confidence. A dream of a jumper, cardigan or other woolen garment unraveling may indicate a growing sense of disillusionment with some aspect of your waking life. The unraveling may be a sign that it is time to look to a new direction for inspiration.

If you are aware in your dream of a problem with your clothing, this is a positive sign as it suggests that you are already aware of tensions that are affecting you in waking life.

If you are unaware that you are dressed inappropriately and only notice this on waking, your unconscious is pointing to the source of feelings you have not yet understood. Finally, if you dream that you are wearing clothes remarkably different from your normal wardrobe, the implication is that you are ill at ease with your self-image. The color, style and texture of your clothes may be able to tell you which area of your life needs to be remolded.... The Element Encyclopedia

1- A procession means an orderly approach and often makes a statement of intent. In a dream, to see a line of people who all appear to have a similar goal or set of beliefs in mind, indicates that it is the intention behind the group which is important. Often a procession is hierarchical, with the most important people either first or last. This could be important in a dream in enabling us to adopt priorities for ourselves.

Prophet

In a dream, each one of God’s prophets, upon all of them be peace and blessings, is like a compassionate father toward his son, who is trying to save his child from the hell of this world and the hell-fire in the hereafter. In a dream, a prophet also represents a teacher, a tutor, a shaikh, a warning, or glad tidings.

If one sees them standing in a stately form, or if one prays behind them, or follows them on the road, or eats something from their delicious food, or drinks from their drink, or if one is anointed with their perfume, or learns something from them, or acquires a particular knowledge from them in a dream, it demonstrates his trueness, faith in God’s oneness, following His Messenger and being faithful to his traditions. Otherwise, if one walks before them, or leads them into a narrow lane, or stones them, or mocks them, or argues with them in a dream, it means that he is an innovator and a heedless person. This could also mean that he will be persecuted by his superiors, for a prophet in a dream also represents a ruler or a king, and God’s prophets are in truth the guardians of the souls, and they are kings in this world and in the hereafter.

A prophet in a dream also represents a religious scholar, because religious scholars are the heirs of the prophets, upon all of them be peace. Religious scholars also know God’s prophets better than the common people. They understand their message and follow their traditions of glorifying God’s Oneness, devotion, piety, prayers, charity, acting upon what they know and admonishing others to follow the path of truth and righteousness.

A prophet in a dream also represents one’s superior, a preacher, a righteous Imam, a conscientious teacher and a caller to God Almighty. Seeing any of God’s prophets looking gracious, stately and courtly in a dream also represents his people’s devotion, or that a major and a positive change will take place among his followers.

If such a prophet looks spurious, unhappy in a dream, or ifhe appears in a state that does not befit God’s prophets, it means that his followers in the world have deviated from his path and created their own religion, opposing his commands, falsifying and interpreting his message to their own liking and abusing his admonition.

If one claims to be a prophet in a dream, it means that he will become known in his field, or if he qualifies, he may become a ruler, ajudge, a teacher or a caller to God Almighty, commanding what is good and forbidding what is evil. Otherwise, it means that he will be inflicted with a great calamity because of a falsehood he fosters, or innovations he practices.

If one becomes a messenger in a dream or a caller to God Almighty, and if someone hearkens to him and accepts his message in the dream, it means that he will rise in rank. Otherwise, it means that he will become a broker, a liar, a defrauder, a swagger, depending on his level of knowledge, or it could mean that he will be struck with a major calamity in his life. Such a calamity will be of the same caliber, degree and nature that a messenger of God Almighty may have suffered from his own people. Seeing one of God’s prophets in a dream also means living the experience of time, space and 344 condition in which he saw him in the dream. Wearing the cloak of one of God’s prophets in a dream means attaining one’s goals, or presiding over people, or acquiring true knowledge. Consequently, one will become renowned, revered and his opinions will be respected by most people.

If one becomes a prophet in a dream, it means that he will die as a martyr, or become poor and be gifted with patience and endurance. He will then be granted victory, and God willing, all his needs will be satisfied. Emulating the devotion of a prophet in a dream means trueness in one’s faith, compliance with God’s religion, certitude and determination. Becoming one of God’s prophets, upon all of them be peace and blessings, in a dream means commanding good and forbidding evil, suffering from adversities and distress equal to those endured by such a prophet, then one will escape from destruction or humiliation by God’s leave and through His subtle kindness. Ifone sees a prophet suffering from poverty and asking for help in a dream, it means that God Almighty will satisfy all the needs of the person seeing such a dream for the sake of the blessings reserved for that prophet.

If one kills a prophet in a dream, it means that he will betray a trust, negate a promise, or deny a covenant. Living in the time ofone of God’s prophets on earth in a dream means honor, dignity, success, piety and wealth if one is suited for such gifts. Otherwise, it means that Satan is deceiving him. Ifa prophet of God Almighty beats a righteous and a sincere believer in a dream, it means that he will attain peace and salvation in his life in the hereafter.

If a prophet talks to someone in a dream, it means that he will receive blessings, honor, status, knowledge, wisdom and fame in his life.

Symbol: The prophet is the instrument, voice, and interpreter of divine revelation.

Vision: Seeing a prophet: he/she may reveal a secret; or you will soon find out what you want to know.

The prophet’s pronouncements or predictions are very important, because they convey valuable information that could influence future life- changing decisions. See Astrology, Fortune-teller.

Depth Psychology: If you get negative information, it may indicate your fears and lack of self worth. Should this dream recur frequently, psychotherapy might be in order. Positive prophecies could become reality.

Prophets

If you are deeply committed to your faith, a dream encounter with a prophet or a figure of great spiritual significance such as Muhammad to a Muslim, Gautama Siddhartha to a Buddhist or Christ or the Virgin Mary to a Christian, is likely to affect you deeply. Your dreaming mind may conjure up such a profoundly important image to give you strength at a time in your life when you need to make a decision about your future. On the other hand, such a dream may also suggest that you have something on your conscience. Whatever the case, your dreaming mind is urging you to follow the example of the spiritual role model as it will help you make the right decision.

If you dream of a prophet or leading religious figure of a faith you do not share, do not dismiss the image as false because all religious figures are united by the same universal truths of love, peace and integrity. Prophets and in some cases priests in dreams can also suggest some kind of conflict between your past and your present.

Jesus Christ is a symbol of both the divine and the human; in dreams, he depicts powerful influences acting upon your personality and your life. The image of Christ on the cross is a symbol of life, death and salvation, the perfect man or state to which you can aspire; if you have such a dream it tends to occur at a crisis point in your life or perhaps when something good in you is being crucified. Christ appearing on the cross also suggests redemption through suffering; you do not need to be crucified physically to suffer. Jesus, like the compassionate, meditating Buddha, is also a symbol of peace, humility and service to others.

The figure of the Buddha appearing in your dreams reminds you of the power of suffering and renunciation.

If you dream of being a Buddhist, you need to look at the difference between Western and Eastern spirituality. In fact, any dream in which you convert to or see images related to a religion, be it Judaism, Christianity, Islam or branches or sects of religions such as Scientology, Kabala or the Moonies suggests a need to open your mind to new possibilities and to explore new outlooks and approaches to life.... Prostitute

1- Dreaming of a prostitute usually suggests a sexual need. In a man’s dream it may signify his need for relationship at any cost. In a woman’s dream it can suggest her own need for sexual freedom. Often, dreaming of a prostitute forces us to look at our own sense of guilt or uncertainty about ourselves.

To be paying a prostitute may suggest that we do not trust our own sexual abilities.

To be paid for the sexual act may suggest that we feel relationships will cost us. In both cases there may be a fear of loving relationships.

2- In dreaming of prostitution, we may actually be connecting with a poor self-image. We are minimising our abilities and talents this may be in a work situation as much as in our personal life. Very often, when we are cxpcctcd to ‘perform’, inadequacy or ego makes us feel that we are ‘prostituting’ our talents.

Depth Psychology: A prostitute can indicate many things. These dreams may, for example, point to uncontrolled lust, sexual fantasy or bondage, or may be an expression of guilt because someone’s love has been misused for selfish purposes.

A prostitute may also stand for everyday “sell-outs,” like being nice to well- connected people that you really don’t like, or doing something strictly for the money even though it is against your better judgment. Human life is full of all kinds of prostitution. How do you stack up?... Dreamers Dictionary

Prostitute

To dream you are a prostitute suggests your desire to experience and express absolute sexual freedom and power. You are preoccupied with thoughts about letting go of your inhibitions and fully exploring your sexuality. Your actual sex life may be too frigid. On the negative side, you may be nursing guilty feelings and bad thoughts about your current relationships. You have difficulty in reconciling a Puritan upbringing with having sex.

To dream you are with a prostitute suggests sexual deprivation or inadequacy. On the other hand, you may prefer a straightforward and easier way to have sex.... Dream Symbols and Analysis

Prostitute

You are probably suffering from a fear of sexual failure or inadequacy if a prostitute featured in your dream; however, other aspects and elements in the dream must be correlated to determine its meaning, but as a general guide: If the prostitute involved in your dream seemed to be a sympathetic type, you are likely to be successful in some volunteer or noncommercial project.

If she (or he) was a brazen, hard- boiled harlot type, you are being warned that unscrupulous behavior may cause you to be scorned by someone whose opinion you value.

Prostitute

Dreaming of a prostitute’s company tells you that you are forgetting your principles and this will harm you in the long run. This dream can also suggest that, somehow, you are prostituting yourself: at work, for example, moral or emotionally. For a man, this dream may represent his attitude toward women. Any type of attraction or rejection could be a reflection of your real feeling regarding the dream’s topic. Maybe this episode intends to encourage you to reflect on your values.

For a woman, this dream predicts an emotional life full of setbacks and unhappiness.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Prostitute

You may feel as if you are trading on that which is intimate or personal for material gain. They say “money can’t buy you love,” but it can indeed buy you sex, which can be a substitute for love and intimacy.

The challenge with prostitution lies in the judgments we place on selling something as intensely personal as one’s body and the act of performing sex for money. This makes prostitution something intensely impersonal.

If you dream of being a prostitute, you may be experiencing something in your waking life that is pointing toward a sense of selling out or taking the easier, softer way through some challenge.

If you are hiring a prostitute, you may want to look at that part of you that is willing to sell yourself short.

If there is prostitution around you in the dream, notice your sense of connection to the concept.

If you are in judgment or fear, consider the idea that there is a lack of integrity in the way that you are handling some person or situation.

A more open attitude toward prostitution might point to a need for a more careful appraisal of your self- judgment, whether it be too severe or whether you might benefit from utilizing more discretion with your choices. No matter what your belief system, on some level prostitution leaves a legacy of shame, which is really the essence of this symbol in the dream. Is the price you are paying for your freedom worth it?... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

Uniformed And Professional Authorities

Uniforms are symbols of depersonalized authority in dreams, so if your dream featured images such as soldiers in uniform or policemen on duty and you were the only one not wearing a uniform, this may reflect your waking sense that you are falling out of line in some way or have deviated from what is expected from you. Did you try to fit in or did you assert your individuality and non-conformist nature?

If members of various professional bodies appeared in your dream, such as doctors, dentists or pilots, try to make a link with the profession they represent and the relevant area of your waking life, as your unconscious may be offering you inspirational or helpful advice.

When the main point of interest in your dream is the occupation or profession, there is typically a good reason why your unconscious has highlighted that particular job. For example, members of the caring professions in dreams, such as nurses, nuns, charity or voluntary workers, may suggest a more compassionate side to your nature, or the side of yourself that has a vocation in life. In men, these images may suggest the importance of non-sexual relationships. For more information about specific occupations and people at work, see SCHOOL AND WORK.... The Element Encyclopedia
