Blue

Points to faithfulness and deep emotions, but also to the desire for relaxation.

It is the symbolic color of the soul, since blue also symbolizes the depth of the sea and the expanse of the sky. It also stands for the unconscious, as well as isolation, expanse, and infinity. It stands for pure, clear Water, distant mountains, and sky. Blue symbolizes nature that has been saved. Pay attention to the degree of brightness!

The color blue may also indicate fogginess (like drunkenness); see also Alcohol.

It is also a symbol of depression (“I am feeling blue”). And last, but not least, a symbol of cold (particularly metallic blue).

Blue can also, as in the case of “blue mountains,” symbolize the connection between heaven and earth— spirit and nature. Blue coats were worn by wise women, pointing to our connection to water, mist, and heaven.

Blue is also the color of the cape worn by Mary; the womb that bore Christ is a symbol for the “sacred vessel.”

In alchemy, blue is the color of the moon, standing in for silver, and blue is also the color of the soul.

As opposed to Red, blue indicates a soothing, cool state (in color therapy, blue is considered relaxing).

In the Orient, blue is the equivalent of black and is considered the color of the underworld.

In Egypt, the underworld of Osiris is depicted in blue or black.

The Sufi (a mystical circle, followers of Mohammed) saw blue as the center of a flame, the expression of the highest form of passion.

A reflection of blue as an expression of passion is also found in our culture in the phrases “the blue hour / ’ and “blue movies”; also the “blues” in music.

Blue

(1) Blue may sometimes symbolize the universal or collective unconscious (as distinct from the individual unconscious).. Perhaps the dream is asking you to base your life on intuitions that come from a deep source within your psyche.

(2) Alternatively, blue may represent the power of the conscious mind, particularly if it is the blue of the sky.

(3) Dark blue may be associated with depression - ‘the blues’.

(4) Blue clothing may symbolize masculinity. Tony Crisp (in his Dream Dictionary) observes that women sometimes dream of threatening men dressed in blue - dark blue or navy. Such a dream should motivate the dreamer to get in touch with her animus and enter into dialogue with it, with a view to establishing a more positive relationship both with the masculine in herself and also with real men in the external world. Perhaps examining her relationship with her father will be the key to understanding her negative attitude towards men and masculinity.

(5) The blue sea may symbolize the unconscious or the feminine (anima, mother, or Great Mother). See also Mother. For anima) below.

(6) At an advanced level of mystical awareness, I understand blue may represent the primal energy from which the universal life-force comes. (In mythology the primeval ocean is that from which all other things arise; though, strictly speaking, the primeval ocean is not itself a thing: it is without form or shape but contains the potential for all forms and shapes.)... Blue

Blue is the color of communication and connects to the body through the throat and the thyroid gland. There is a connection between our metabolic activity, which is regulated by the thyroid, and the effectiveness of our communication. Through our voice, we communicate with others, but it is through our energy levels that we commune with our immediate environments. Other communication concepts associated with this color are the blueprints that communicate the structure of something not yet created.

The call of a hospital emergency is known as a “code blue.” Before a brochure or magazine page is printed, the early version used to finalize the design and layout is known as the “blue line.” When blood circulation diminishes due to a drop in body temperature, the lips will turn blue and communication will be hindered. These are but a few examples that may not relate to a specific image; however, when the color blue is prominent in your dream, incorporate issues of communication into your interpretation.

Blue

Blue is a cool, calming color, often used for relaxation and meditation. Historically, it bears associations with spirituality and is representative of truth, intellect, and justice. Within the world of dreams, blue is often thought to be a symbol of the conscious mind, especially if the dream features blue skies. A shimmering bright blue may suggest feelings of well-being and tranquility.

Muddy shades of blue may denote depression or moodiness. A darker shade of blue points more to the unconscious and a readiness to liberate yourself from repressed feelings. Dark angry blue may suggest feelings of isolation and an undependable character.

If you see anyone wearing dark blue in your dream, it should act as a general warning not to be too trusting in waking life.

If someone paints with the color blue on you, you may be deceived by someone you trusted.

Clear blue water in a dream is often interpreted as a sign that the dreamer should pay attention to their emotional needs because blue, as with color in general, is a symbol of the emotions. The appearance of a blue precious stone may indicate freedom from a particular burden in waking life. Blue clothes are linked to notions of masculinity and the male part of the dreamer’s psyche. Pale blue is traditionally the color in which baby boys are clothed, so, if you are about to become a parent, could you be thinking about a baby son? Light blue reflects the vastness of space, the sky and the infinite possibilities of spiritual development. It represents moral values and high standards, open-mindedness, intellect and steadfastness of purpose, so, if you have decided on a particular course of action, its appearance in your dream may be a positive signal from your unconscious that you should trust your decision.

Blue birds represent hope and liberation. Blue smoke is connected to new projects and a beautiful blue vase may suggest that you are in a state of emotional contentment. When this color appears in your dreams, it is probably a message from your subconscious telling you to relax, think things through and take things one step at a time. Depending on the context of your dream, the color blue may also be a metaphor of ‘being blue’ and feeling sad; you may, however, want to take off ‘into the blue’ to enjoy a more adventurous, unpredictable existence? Dark

Example: ‘1 ran down very dark streets, like a maze, and could not find a way out of them’ (Mrs N). Darkness has many meanings, depending on what else appears in the dream. In the example the feeling is of being lost and trapped in depressing feelings.

What is unknown; not defined by the intellect or conscious self; unconscious; depression; confusing, terrifying; secrets we hide from self or others; things we do under cover of darkness’; age; the womb, death.

The following dream depicts particular aspects of darkness. Example: ‘It was a festival in this strange world, in which everything had a rather dark, dilapidated look’ (Tom). Dark here is ancient, things dating from times past. This may refer to our sense of our own childhood which feels like the ancient past, or to our unconscious knowledge of family and cultural attitudes and experience. In general the ‘strange’ world of the unconscious or sleep.

Example: ‘I was overwhelmed by terror, as if the very darkness of the tunnel was a living force of fear which entered and consumed me. I screamed and screamed, writhing in uncontrollable fit-like contractions. Nevertheless a part of me was observing what was happening and was amazed, realising I had found something of great importance’ (Andrew P). Because the dreamer explored this dream with me, I know the darkness was depicting fear Andrew experienced while a nine year old in hospital. He was given a rectal anaesthetic because he was about to have a nose operation. He fought and begged for the nurses to stop, but to no avail. This led to a very real feeling that humans were terrifyingly dangerous animals who would not respond even if you were on your knees begging. So trauma was the fear in the darkness. Darkness here is the unconscious area of experience.

Example: ‘I am back in time looking at an old cottage. I see the windows, walls and doors, everything about the place.

It is dark and old and warm. I see the curtains and bedrooms, all the ornaments and I feel safe and comfortable’ (Mrs R). Here dark is comfortable, perhaps because it is undemanding, one is not in any glare of attention or activity.

It is the relaxed quiet of evening. This woman has a relaxed relationship with her unconscious.

Example: ‘I met a woman I know in a long, dark underground tunnel. She was waiting for me. We had sexual intercourse. She had a very formed vagina mouth, and a very large clitoris, like a small penis. I masturbated this’ (Norman). Norman has no fear of the tunnel.

It is his secret desire and pleasure which he admits to no one, often not even to himself. Dark here is one’s secret self.

Dark water: emotions which are felt and powerful but have not been defined or their source understood. Dark colours: feelings emanating from unconscious sources; depressed or unhappy feelings. Dark, Darkness

The ancients found the darkness a source of great fear, and so dreaming of darkness could be calling your attention to a fear you have that needs to be dealt with.

Darkness also hides one’s surroundings, and so darkness in a dream could indicate that you are “in the dark” about something, and need to find the truth.

If you walk through the darkness into the light, this is showing you that you will indeed find the truth, and success will come your way.

If a storm causes a bright day to suddenly turn into darkness, this is a warning not to get too complacent with your present circumstances, and to save for “a rainy day.”... Dream Explanations of Astro Center

Darkness

Well-known symbol for our shadow, where a shadow depicts something invisible. Fear of people, emotions, thoughts, actions, and situations we don’t understand, since they are in the dark. Ambiguous premonition; not knowing; secrets. Walking into your own darkness, more awareness is called for.

The task almost always is to become more aware (Light), to shed light on something intellectually, or to deal more consciously with the unknown. Your own shadow is now visible, which is great progress and brings freedom. There are also “light shadows”—Angel and Fairy—but they are seldom addressed in dreams.

Also, do not lose sight of your path in the dark.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

Being in a cave: you are unconsciously afraid of being attacked. Being in a dark closet: you recognize somebody’s hidden intentions just in time to prevent the person from carrying them out. See Night.

Depth Psychology: Dreaming about darkness always refers to an emotionally dangerous situation or one that is unresolved. This may have to do with a specific experience widi other people or yourself. Try to shed some light on the situation. Being in a dark passage: you are feeling unprotected from the intensity of others and yourself.

Darkness

(see also Black)

(1) Darkness is a common symbol of the unconscious.

If the darkness is frightening, this represents your fear of the unknown forces in your psyche.

If the darkness is warm and velvety, you are being invited to regard your unconscious as your friend.

(2) Darkness pierced by a light may be a sign that ‘light shines in darkness5: that the truth you are seeking (about yourself, or about life) is to be found in the unconscious. Darkness represents the unconscious in its unknown aspect; when it has been integrated into one’s conscious life, all is light. (On the shadow)

(3) It may be that, in the dream, you cannot find your way to the light, for example, at the end of a dark tunnel. This may reflect desperate feelings; frustration; depression. See also Tunnel.

(4) The dark place may be womb-like and represent your own mother or, more likely, your emotional relationship to your mother. The unconscious may be recommending that you liberate yourself from a dominating mother (or mother image) and become your own person.

It may represent, not your own mother, but mother in a vaguer and profounder sense: ‘Mother Nature5, physiological, natural, instinctive functions; the unconscious. See also (I) above and (5) below.

(5) Darkness may represent death. (The womb, too, may be a symbol of death: the desire to return to the womb is a desire to escape from life’s pains and problems.) See also Dead / Death.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

Darkness

Traditionally, it is identified with the principle of evil and the occult forces, though dreaming of darkness possibly reflects your mood, perhaps somewhat depressed or pessimistic.

If the darkness frightens you, perhaps you are afraid to investigate the unknown parts of yourself.

If you get lost in it, the dream is representing your feelings of insecurity, despair, or depression.

If it is, instead, “the darkness before dawn,” your unconscious is optimistic that your prospects are more promising than you think. A light at the end of a tunnel or the stars and the moon shining in the sky is an indication that your aspirations and desires are positive and urgently seek a light to guide you in life and tell you where to go. During the darkness, that’s when the unconscious lives more intensely. For this reason, the night is the symbolic moment in which characters from horror novels such as witches, ghosts, etc. meet These frightening figures are only representing our hidden aspects, or the lower forces mentioned earlier.

The Chinese oracle I Ching, used by Carl Jung to help with dream interpretations, says that when the darkness is so great that you can see absolutely nothing, it is to get darker. So, things can only get better.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Darkness

Like many other common elements of our everyday experience, darkness can represent a wide range of things.

As the polar opposite of light, darkness may represent evil, death, fear of the unknown, or feeling lost. Darkness or a dark region in a dream is often symbolic of the unconscious, the womb, or unseen possibilities.

As with all dream symbols, the tone and setting of the dream indicate which interpretation is appropriate.... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia
