Sleep Walking

Very common with some people, especially during adolescence or times of stress. Sometimes accompanied by hallucinations. Sleep walking is normal as an occasional event in children.

If the child is agitated, excited or acting in a manner to injure themselves during the sleep walking, then it may be a sign of emotional distress.

The same applies to adults. Many sleep walkers perform complex acts without coming to harm.

A young Ponsmouth boy drove his father’s car 27 miles before waking in Southampton.

The police checked his story and did not charge him. But sometimes severe injury is inflicted either upon themselves or others. During a dream phone-in on London Broadcasting Company, a man told me his experience of smashing through a glass window, cutting an artery and nearly bleeding to death. In America and England homicidal acts have been committed while the person claimed to be sleepwalking, and the people involved were acquitted of murder.

Because of such powerful activity during sleep, many people who experience this type of sleep walking are worried about what they might do to a partner sleeping next to them.

In most cases one wakes as the contact is made, or the involved person wakes one, but the element of risk cannot be denied. Where such worry exists, hope can be gained by understanding what was observed with many men who began to sleep walk after war combat. In their cases the movements, speech and emotions were observably connected with trauma occurring during their war experience.

The self regulatory process in dreams was thereby attempting to release the tension, horror or emotional pain of the events. Where these emotions could be met consciously, perhaps with the help of a psychotherapist, the sleep movements stopped. This suggests that dramatic activity while sleep walking has similar roots, and can be dealt with. ... sleep walking dream meaning

Backwards (walking)

Dreaming that you walk backwards means that you are regressing in life. What you are looking for is increasingly farther away. You may feel unsuccessful, unable to achieve goals. Thanks to the warning sign of this dream, you must begin to take action. On the other hand, perhaps it expresses that the best option is to withdraw. Sometimes you waste time fighting for something that is not worth it. A good option is to stay back momentarily, regain your strength, and then return with more vigor and momentum.... backwards (walking) dream meaning

Building Up

It involves construction and progress.

If in the dream you are dedicated to building a house it means that you are rebuilding your life, so you have new projects. Buildings and houses present in dreams are symbols of the Self. The higher floors are your conscious. The lower levels, your unconscious mind.

If going down to the basement produces an unpleasant feeling or frightens you it means that there are aspects that make you frustrated. A good solution is to develop activities and new knowledge. The building’s condition also expresses how you value yourself emotionally.

If it is in ruins it indicates suffering because of your image. You need to do things that make you feel better. On the other hand, it could also refer to your physical condition. The different parts of the building, finally, can represent life’s time periods. Modern rooms are your present and conscious side. The oldest, your unconscious past. (See CONSTRUCTION)

Small buildings presage bad luck; large ones, advantageous changes in the future.... building up dream meaning

Façade (building)

If the house is a reflection of the soul, the façade represents the image we project and the way we relate to people around. A façade in good condition is an indication that you are satisfied with your relationships. Likewise, if in ruins it indicates that your external image is poor and does not satisfy you.

If the façade does not match the interior of the house, the dream indicates a mismatch between what you are and what you project.... façade (building) dream meaning

Walking / Running / Cycling

In general, activities such as walking, running and cycling are self-sufficient, pro-active and personal modes of progression, owing their movement entirely to will and physical effort. A possible Gestalt interpretation would be to regard dreams of walking, running or cycling as projections of the dreamer’s developing independence and autonomy. Your competence within your dream activity depicts your emotional stage.

If you are agile, this suggests you are coping well.

If movements flow, you feel in harmony with your emotions and your sexuality. If, however, you get stuck, feel stiff and cannot move easily, this could indicate that your personal development is held back by anxieties and fears. To dream you are walking is probably a comment on the pace of your waking life, and how well you are coping with all your responsibilities.

If you are walking confidently, it could indicate that you are in control and taking things in your stride. Consider your destination. Do you know what it is?

To dream that you are walking at night signifies discontent.

If you are limping, this refers to a lack of balance in some area in your life. Perhaps you feel that you are giving more than you are getting back at work, or in a particular relationship. To dream that you are marching suggests teamwork, or the need to involve yourself more with other people in order to achieve results.

If you were running or racing and keeping up with the others, this is a positive sign, but if you were falling behind or trying and failing to win a race, you need to rethink your schedule in daily life to relieve some of the pressures on you.

When specific activities appear in a dream, you might also need to consider whether or not you are filling your waking hours with productive and positive activities. It may be that changes need to be made. For example, if you dream of running, this could simply indicate your need to exercise more. Alternatively, it could suggest that you are exercising too much, and need to get balance back into your life.

Ancient Building

The pyramid is said to be a focus of spiritual energy, so it if appears in your dream, your unconscious is drawing your attention to the power within. Dreams about old or ancient buildings refer to the past and experiences that have been lived through, such as a former life with another person. Ruins suggest a now irrelevant way of life or approach to life. The ruins may belong to a castle, and this suggests that the defenses you once built up are no longer necessary.

Mansions and palaces in dreams have a similar interpretation as houses, but with the emphasis on those possibilities within us that have yet to be developed and explored. There is a sense of something special or wonderful happening within yourself, as palaces are places of enchantment and treasure in fairy tales. However, palaces may also represent a warning against adopting a pretentious façade and living beyond your means.... ancient building dream meaning

Components Of A Building

If you dream of a balcony, ledge or sill, this suggests a need for support and protection in your life. An elevator or lift in a dream usually suggests how we deal with information.

If the lift is going down, we may be going down into our unconscious for self-understanding, whereas a lift going up could represent moving towards greater self-understanding. Halls or passageways in a dream can, for Freudians, represent passages within the body, such as the vagina or penis. On a psychological level, they can suggest how we let others invade our personal space. On a spiritual level, passages can represent the different stages of our life. A hall is the center of a building and to dream of entering a hall may therefore represent the beginnings of a journey towards self-awareness.

According to dream lore, to dream of a long hallway suggests a period of worry ahead.

Walls in dreams indicate potential blocks to your progress, or difficulties you may be up against in waking life. They suggest obstacles that are stopping you from getting what you want. This may be something from real life or something within yourself. Perhaps you are being like a brick by refusing to show your feelings, or have come up against a brick wall with a particular problem or issue.

If the wall looks old, this suggests the problem is old.

If the wall is made of glass, this suggests problems with perception.

If the wall is closing in, the dreamer may feel trapped by their current lifestyle. A brick wall, rampart or dividing wall all suggest the difference between everyday life and the inner psychological state. According to dream lore, if you find a gateway through a wall, this is a sign of good fortune.

Exploring A Building

Dreams about exploring a building are encouraging you to explore your own personality or resolve an ongoing conflict. In other words, the dream is encouraging you to make more of your attributes and abilities, as unexplored potential and new ideas lie within you. This is especially true if you find yourself exploring unfamiliar rooms in a well-known house in your dream.

If the building is run down or dilapidated, this may suggest a personality or body in need of attention, but if the building is well cared for and clean, it suggests confidence and good self-esteem. A building under attack may suggest that someone or something is trying to break in.

If a building is under construction or being demolished, this refers to your own ability to construct and destroy your life.

If the building is familiar, the reference may be to the actual building itself; for example, if you dream of a structural fault, you might want to get the design checked out.

If the building you are exploring in your dream is a public building such as a factory, law court, prison and department store, the building often represents the function suggested by its nature, such as work, education and healing. Bear in mind, though, that if these images appear in your dreams, they will also have personal connections and feelings associated with those buildings. For example, if a factory feels like a museum, both associations should be considered. Finally, consider carefully how you react to the building in your dream. Were you intimidated by it or did you feel comfortable? If the former, your dream may be warning that you are over-reaching yourself in waking life. The latter is more reassuring.... exploring a building dream meaning

Religious Building

Any religious building suggests a refuge where you can gather your thoughts and consider your beliefs. Even if you are not religious, in dreams religious buildings highlight your spiritual, peace-loving and idealistic potential. Most of us have principles we live by and these may surface in your dreams in the symbol of a religious building.

If you are walking past a church or religious building in your dream, this suggests that you are not making contact with the best part of yourself. Is your waking life so crammed with obligations that you don’t have time to explore your inner world for some much-needed reflection, meditation and contemplation? If you entered a temple in your dream and immediately felt enveloped in a sense of calm, was your unconscious suggesting that you would enjoy better health if you treated your body as a temple, putting your physical, emotional and spiritual welfare first? Dreams about religious buildings may also be an expression of anger against dogma; again it depends on the feelings evoked by the building in your dream. Did you feel relieved or tense? If a vault features in your dream, it may represent your highest spiritual ideals, as vaults often appear in churches or temples with painted stars in imitation of the vault of the heavens. A vault may also recall a crypt or burial chamber, and as such, it may conjure up thoughts of death.

Aunt / Uncle

For Jungians, an aunt may represent the anima (feminine aspect) of a male dreamer and the uncle the animus (masculine aspect) of a female dreamer. Uncles and aunts in dreams can also be symbols of your unconscious feelings towards your mother or father. The most general characteristic of dreams that feature your aunt is that they depict an aspect of yourself. For many people an aunt is a role model, so if she figures in your dream, she is commenting on the success or failure of certain strategies you may be using in your waking life. An uncle may also be a role model and, however you feel about him in waking life, your dream may use him to make a comment on the success or failure of strategies you may be using in waking life. For example, if you think of your uncle as a failure or a success, ask yourself what it is in yourself that you consider to be a failure or a success.... aunt / uncle dream meaning

The dream usually indicates that you feel intensely vulnerable in some area of your life. It may be that a relationship has stripped away your defences, leaving you emotionally exposed. Perhaps you feel uncomfortable about an occasion when you revealed more of yourself than you had really wanted. Sometimes the dream suggests that you haven’t yet found a suitable role in life.

If the dream is set in your office, it can signify underlying feelings of inadequacy about your work. You may be harbouring a fear that others will realize you are not as capable as they think.

Questions to ask yourself - and what to do when the answer is ‘yes’

Do I feel emotionally susceptible?

  • It may be that you have taken the role of victim in a relationship, so the dream is alerting you to the need to armour yourself. However, it’s also possible that you are feeling defenceless because the other person is seeing you just as you are. If you usually hide behind a barrier, this can feel uncomfortable. Yet being loved for who you are is the basis of emotional healing and may be exactly what you need.

Am I worried that I may have revealed too much of myself?

  • Perhaps you’re usually a little too reticent, so that what you said or did wasn’t nearly as explicit as you fear. Although it would be wise to watch for possible consequences your fears are likely to prove groundless.

Am I trying to find a suitable role in life?

  • Unless you’re lucky enough to have a vocation it can be difficult to find your niche in life. I suggest you seek advice from a careers counsellor.

Am I worried about my ability to do my job properly?

  • If you are struggling with some aspect of your job, it would be best to ask for help or further training. Perhaps, though, you need to give yourself more credit for your abilities. You may be magnifying your shortcomings at the expense of your confidence. Could it be that you have unrealistically high expectations of yourself?

Walking And Talking In Your Sleep

Sleepwalking or moving is an attempt to put a dream into action. Most likely you have grown out of the habit, if you ever had it, but if an occasion arises which is very stressful, we may, like Lady Macbeth, re- enact the nightmare in this way. Talking in your sleep is similar in cause to sleep movement. It is an attempt to carry a dream on verbally. You are more likely to walk or talk or move in your sleep when you are under mental pressure. Most of the time this is totally harmless but some sleepwalkers and talkers can put themselves in real danger. Precautions should therefore be taken.

Make sure windows are closed and, if stairs are a hazard, doors locked. If you’re really worried about your sleepwalking, seek advice from your doctor and if someone you know is sleepwalking don’t try to wake them—just guide them quietly and gently back to bed.... walking and talking in your sleep dream meaning

Back Seat

The back seat of a vehicle (or a seat that’s not near the driver) can represent: Being or feeling away from the main action or events.

Being an observer in a group process rather than a full participant or decision maker.

Following others or “just along for the ride.” Secondary or inferior, or feeling that way.

Consider the context and the intention of the person in the back seat.

If they’re trying to direct the driver, they could represent a desire for more control in a particular situation.

If happily riding, they could represent someone who was present but not a primary player in the real-life events represented in the dream.

Being Naked

Finding yourself naked in a dream can be a shock: perhaps you were going about your daily business, at work or walking down the street, and suddenly you notice your clothes are missing! You are exposed, and this is exactly what you fear in your waking life. There is something you have been hiding; this could be an aspect of your personality, a secret, or something you feel ashamed of. You’re afraid that this is about to be revealed.

It could be that you feel all eyes are on you at this time and you’re fearful of doing or saying something wrong. Naked dreams are common when we feel under pressure to perform: at an interview, in a test or giving a presentation. Look to your dream surroundings for clues as to which area of your life this is pointing to. Also notice how others look at you. If they fail to notice your nudity, then this suggests your fears are unfounded and you are letting them take over rather than focusing on the task in hand.

Naked dreams can be extremely liberating, particularly if you feel confident without clothes! This suggests that you are happy in your own skin and feel able to reveal who you really are to the world.... being naked dream meaning
